I wished you have measured the original MMIC first so we could have a better picture of the before and after... I did this same mod to these chinese amps (the board and shield are pretty cool) but using PGA103, that was before I purchased my VNA, so I still dont know what the original performance was... @@IMSAIGuy I see what looks like a series diode to drop the power (unless it's a zener but the stripe is to the right). Wondering if the 12V marked on the lid is in error or if the part in the Chinese ones runs at 12V? Some of the units on the web with similar looks have 5V marked. Maybe the series resistor takes care of some of it? It also looks like the caps are at the top of the resistor (not in betweek the R and L) but hard to tell for sure. I'd be curious what DC supply voltage the part is seeing
how the hell do they get that nice flat gain and S11 for such a wide band?!?!?!? Most matching networks are kind of narrow band, and I did not see any distributed planar match in the PCB...

The GAL-21 datasheet has Vcc of 3.5V nominal with 4.1V max. Is that an issue or is there a regulator somewhere?

A SOT-89 is actually a pretty big package...
