    In this video:
    I start with a little overview of the jigs and lures i'll be using for high speed trolling. This is a solo fishing trip so it's going to be a tough one. I have never done high speed trolling before and let me tell you, it is exhausting!
    I fuel up at Tavernier Creek Marina and run out into the Atlantic Ocean towards the Islamorada humps. My main goal is to catch Wahoo today. Will I catch one? I start trolling around and manage to pick up some black fin tuna. Yummy!
    After lots of high speed trolling I take a break and try some deep dropping over the islamorada humps. It's not long before I put in a nice amount of red snapper on the boat. Too bad they are out of season! I had to throw them back, but that's ok. I will catch those red snapper another day. Luckily I got a black fin snapper for the icebox. I will eat that fish later in the video. I catch and cook on the same day like a true champion
    I try some more high speed trolling without too much more luck and then the worst thing ever happens. A massive fishing knot. Oh man what will I do?
    Back at home I fillet the black fin tuna and freeze them for another day. I will be making sushi with that tuna later.
    I eat the black fin snapper and it was amazing. This was another great catch n cook episode and I hope you enjoyed it!

    Suggestion: if out alone, get a 20’-ish coiled spear fishing line with clips and attach one side to engine kill switch and one to your belt so if you fall overboard the engine dies and (hopefully) you can swim back to the boat. Also, wear a belt bag and inside it have a PLB and a waterproof hand-held VHF. I fish alone sometimes and ALWAYS have that setup in case I go in the drink I can save myself. Great and entertaining videos man!

    Dude, get yourself an AUTO TETHER setup. If you go overboard out there, your boat keeps going in a straight line . . . I fish solo but I wear an auto thether, if I go over board the kils witch is activated. I also wear my lifejacket at all times and have a PLB in my jacket. The ocean can bite!

    Biggest beeliners I've ever seen and this guy thought it was a red snapper and threw it back....... I was like NO DUDE, NO! On a more serious note, you need to operate a little bit safer when you are alone. That kill switch tether needs to be on you when the boat is moving, no exceptions - it could save your life man.

    you must just use a bold, serrated knife, so the bait releases more scent, and their oil. So the fish think it an easy catch, that it was attacked just before. Just watch out for canoe fishers, that you do not go over one. Ain't the first time that it happens. And i can tell you, it's scary as hell! With me, it was a freaking million dollar yacht. Did it a few times, fishing from a canoe. Not very comfy. Especially when you catch something big, like a blue fin large tuna. It's like a running wild engine. The power, and stamina it has, And they turn on a dime. It's fun, but you get to know muscles that you didn't know you had. Anyway, like your vids, and like the man that is sometimes with you. Take care. Bye! And healthy! As well to the other viewers, STAY SAFE AND HEALTHY!!! But don't let them make you go insane! Enjoy, and just use common sense. Take care, relax, and enjoy! Bye guys! And girls!

    Fun to watch, but if you are going to run that far offshore by yourself, you need an EPIRB. I hope you have your fire extinguisher and throwable right inside that door, cause I don't see them anywhere quickly accessible... What speed were you told to troll those lures at? We normally troll at around 8-9 knots...

  • @johnnorris1227
    @johnnorris1227 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Those must of been some hungry tuna because 14 knots is flying. You shouldn't have to troll that fast I would think right around 8 knots would be plenty and when its rough you should troll parallel to the waves and only go into or against when making turns. Also your daisy chain/way back should be your highest rod in the center of your spread and adding a boone bird attracter inline in front of the daisy chain usually helps to bring fish up. When speed trolling to get your lures down deeper try planers either old salty or sea striker as they are much more effective than inline lead. You can run smaller planers inline or off a rope tied to back of boat you can run the larger planers with a release to attach your line to.

    Trolling is best practiced as a team sport. You can tighten a screw near the steering connection at the motor to stop the boat from driving herself. You had a great day. You caught dinner. You’ve worked your ass off, well done.

  • @mathewjaycox843
    @mathewjaycox843 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Tighten up your steering a little and then the boat will stay straight. Slow down a bit when running from site to site when the waves are so big and you will reduce your stress and use less fuel.

  • @anthonybruno7867
    @anthonybruno7867 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I'm sure you've tweaked your technique a bit but a couple words of advice: on the trolling lead you should have the shorter end of the cable snapped on the swivel going into into the rod tip, not the side connecting to your shock cord. This way the lead wont swing as much when it is cranked to the rod tip. Also, you should run your shotgun (longbait) off of your leaning post rocket launcher in the middle. Your straight butt rod would also be better for this and the bent butt should be used for the bonito or another wahoo lure Just makes for a better spread.

    Helpful to think about the difference between a tangle and a knot. If you treat a tangle like a knot you will create many knots from a tangle. Tangles are like loops inside of loops and a knot is a.....well, it’s a knot. Think of tangles as half knots. Open it up and spread it out and it can usually be resolved quickly. Sometimes once you open it up and spread it a little the tangle will simply fall apart or reveal itself. I’ve always bean fascinated with tangles. Even as a kid to find a tangled piece of string, cord, or even wire was like a fun puzzle to me. Now tangled braided line is like candy to me. Usually because nothing is biting and I have all day to untangle it.

    Here in Oregon, most of your snapper there would be referred to officially and typically as Rockfish. We have Red Snapper, and considering what yours must look like, ours tend to be far more plump and fat, while being a little shorter. More bulk, less body here. Also, to the fact those are Vermillions you threw back according to the rest of the folk there on the East coast makes me curious if there is an actual difference between our Vermillion Rockfish and your Vermillion Snapper.

    hay I'm back - not trying to be a know it all , but have a few tips for you . #1 - keep a small bungee cord on your steering console , when trying to setup your trolling lines just hook it on your steering wheel with a little tension and it will help to keep you going straight . #2 - when you are fileting slide the tip of your knife under the skin with the edge facing out so you are actually cutting from the inside out for your first cuts . It will keep the edge sharp much much longer . Just some of the some of the tricks from when I fished commercial . Good luck & keep up the good videos !

    Hahahahaha too funny. Someday you'll look back and laugh about. Any time you go deep sea always have a pitch rod ready for the mahi. That was a vermillion snapper. Red snapper are really red and look more like a mutton but without the dot and blue lines in the face

    Pretty work and fun video.
    Just a little tip, especially when fishing solo, hand-lining 50-75' of pissed off wahoo is enough to get the most experienced wire man puckered up and the biggest risk is the line at your feet. Id suggest crimping a loop into that leader (use 4 crimps and two(2) - 3 or 4" pieces of same lb test.as.your leader making two loops and snap your in-line lead to.that so when landing the fish you can quickly un-snap your.lead and.continue to wind-on your leader.
    If you have any questions about my mediocre explanation let me know and Ill show you a few examples of times I've usef it (i do mine with a #16old salty planer)

    Dude you’re killin it. I’m in the same position. I go out and I fish. I get a little help from TH-cam but no one ever gave me spots. I’ve never chartered a boat. I trailered all the way down to marathon last year and without any experience I trolled up a 100 pound blue marlin on a rapala 30’ deep diver. You should try them. They are easy to use and they also come in a 40’ diver now. I use them to troll for big grouper in north Florida where I live.

    I lived on Plantation Key and fished the hump many times. I now live back in Michigan. While those were big rollers they are NOTHING like the choppy waters of Lake Michigan. Lake Michigan 4 ft waves will beat you to death...lol.

    That Yellow-Eye was definitely not overcooked, but way undercooked to my liking !Good job cleaning and sealing the Tuna ! I know you like danger, but going out on the boat in those rough conditions is very , very dangerous ! I would hope you could find someone, ANYONE to go with you as a back up if you either fell out of the boat, or fell inside the boat and knocked yourself out ? STAY SAFE HEIKO ! Make sure you use that safety lanyard to the kill switch, especially when you are out there alone !!!

  • @johnreid8551
    @johnreid8551 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Going out alone, especially that fast is a recipe for disaster. All you need to have happen is smack a partially submerged object and you'd be tossed forward like a missile. Life sucks if you're incapacitated by broken bones and hemorrhaging internally/externally without anybody to provide first aid and call for help. You're an accident in the making and I say that out of caring, not judgement. I've spent 30 years at sea as a professional mariner. Also, invest in an auto-pilot. You won't regret it.

    We used to troll off the Texas Coast in the Gulf at 4-8 knots. We mainly used the Boone King 2oz Zig. I’ve smoked Wahoo, Large Kings, etc. off that $8 trolling bait. I’d put one 100y out & the other just behind the engine wash. Try it out where you’re at. I’d love to see how it works. Gold & Silver colors worked best for me. Nice vids! New sub.

    Hikego if you're catching all your fish on the daisy chain why don't you put another daisy chain on a different poll or take off red deep driver l lure that's not catching anything and slow down your boat to 10 or 12 nots

  • @sheminger
    @sheminger 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yeah and I have to agree about the safety thing. You even said so your self in the video about being thrown from the boat. Don’t rely on that emergency gps. And put on a damn life vest if your alone jumping waves while walking around the damn boat! Ask any coast guard rescue spotter on a helicopter. Your head is reeeeeeealy small compared to the Atlantic Ocean. They can fly right over you and never see you amongst the waves. And don’t count on high visibility glassy seas. If it were glassy you probably wouldn’t be in the water. Floating is real important in the ocean.
    On the bright side, I’ve seen far worse ways of dying other than drowning. It seems like a good way to go compared to some others.

    Ohh my goodness I hope you are a much better at Safety now than this time!! You made me so nervous walking around while running at that speed then seating on the side of the running boat with No safety for killing the engine if u fell in and no safety jacket , You should have had them being all alone so many things could have gone wrong thank god they didn't... Plz if you are still doing this consider some type of safety while fishing that way alone...

    Hey Heiko! Great channel. I suggest you ware a long kill switch lanyard just Incase you end up overboard on heavy seas with your boat running fast in gear. Or ware a type IV inflatable just Incase. Stay safe. Hope to fish those waters one day when I’m back to Florida.

    When you’re alone fission on a sailboat you’re supposed to have a life jacket some safety line same case I drop over or you alone you can put yourself in the back and dizzy I don’t know why some people to do stupid things in case something should happen Gahan leave you can reach the both of you have the string to receive thing on they deliver so if in case of your file and pull off on the board stop

    At about about 26 minutes in you make me super nervous, should definitely be careful standing in a funny spot while the throttles locked like that, if a rogue wave sneaks up on you and tosses you from the boat you are super, super fucked. Just saying, be careful out there alone
