Something I would suggest to people who say that cancel culture doesn't exist: there's a difference between caring accountability and vicious tearing down -- we're definitely doing way more of the latter at the moment, which is why the term cancel culture has come about. I've seen too many instances of good people doing lots of positive work online for various social causes being targeted for a very minor 'slip up' and then having their sincere apology mocked. That's not accountability, it's an inflated sense of moral superiority, which makes me sad as it's not based in empathy for fellow human beings. Anyway, great work Amelia, really enjoying these vids x
The reason people say “cancel culture” isnt a thing is because it’s just another term for public shaming. Something we as a society have been doing ever since society was a thing. If it wasn’t putting people in stocks and throwing tomato’s at them to having news networks cast every night about a celebrity or political scandal or just voicing opinion online. It has just gone through constant rapid change as we have grown. Even more to say that it has been used so much for so many things that it’s become such a blur as to how people define it. Some would argue it’s completely ruining a persons reputation forever, but many who’ve been “cancelled” have rehabilitated their careers. Some say it’s a blatant attack on freedom of speech, even though freedom of speech is only a rule to be obeyed by government and does not make acceptation for the opinions of individuals or private corporations. And others treat it as if simply disagreeing with or disliking someone else’s opinion or idea is “cancelling” even though they’re also just using their freedom of speech. And I’m not saying I agree with this sort of public shaming and while a lot of it is justified a lot of it also is not. But to simply rebrand mob mentality when it comes to publicly shaming and hating individuals it’s just pointless and has very much been used to stoke stupid and baseless culture-wars that have no point and do nothing but divide an already divided western society.
Whoever was the researcher for this episode (you could tell by the examples written onscreen, the research was thorough) well done! From defining terms to giving examples, discussion media is sorely missing this sound approach. Putting information at the centre is so important.
@Roc Towerhug of course it’s an employers business to make an issue out of it... if they hire a racist they in turn will look racist... if they don’t want to look racist they should not employ the racist
Ok this was ages ago, but I think my point would be that the problem doesn't lie with cancel culture but with our completely dysfunctional systems of fame and influence. We as a society almost arbitrarily hand out vast amounts of wealth and fame to a select amount of people and then complain when a dodgy opinion makes us realise that these people aren't deserving of their success. Nobody can ever be morally perfect enough to 'deserve' what fame affords them, because how much hard work and being a good person would you have to do to fairly earn millions of pounds and the right to shape public opinion? It would be literally impossible. Our value and reward systems are completely out of whack, and until we realise that no human needs or deserves millions, we won't be free of people pursuing 'cancel culture' as a shitty knock off attempt at making things fair. Obviously, cancel culture can affect normal people too, but in terms of celebrities I think what we've got going on at the moment is just a natural effect of our 'socially liberal but economically conservative' societies.
The only couple of times I've had people try to get me sacked from work was when I had said something slightly disparaging against Z lister celebs, nothing hateful, but mocking observations. and their fangirls tried to contact my work, but since I'm the boss they got told to grow up.
I was watching this and thinking: How long has this been playing? It's genius. Only 4 minutes? No. Really? Huh. I need the bathroom. Should I eat a sandwich? Do vitamins really expire? 5 minutes! Maybe I should read a book.

Here is the thing...its too easy not to do the things that get you canceled. Why do you need to Express a sexist, racist expression? Why do we need to keeping states of known racist up? I dont see the need to keep what we know wrong as part of our existence, shouldnt we want to be better. My only issue with cancel culture is diving back into peoples past as teenagers...I think cancel culture should stick to adulthood!
The issues is that what's to say if something is truly sexist or racist? Of course those things are bad, but not everyone agrees on whether something truly is racist or sexist, or anything else. For example, I didn't find Dave Chappelle's specials to be particularly transphobic/rooted in hate for trans people, but plenty of people disagree with me. It's complicated, but yes I definitely agree with you that it should at least stick to adulthood lol, what we say and do as teenagers doesn't necessarily reflect us as adults... !
Cancel culture don't exist. It's just a terminology used for some people who have this superiority complex. If you don't want to support someone for what ever reason it is. Then you are welcome to do that. It's not necessary to try and get everyone to stop supporting who you don't want to support. Always remember the energy and intention you put out. The beardy guy is right. People who object to being held accountable for what they've said/done, very often quite powerful people with access to the media, claim to have been "cancelled". This is much easier than looking at what you're being held to account for, and lets you off the hook, as you claim victimhood.
