It feels like no one knows what causes PCOS, so not a lot of time is spent investigating it on a case by case basis. I was diagnosed after struggling to conceive. I’ve never been overweight, have always lead an active lifestyle, and have eaten a well-balanced diet for my whole adult life. It feels like my only option is to take medications to manipulate the reproductive process if I want to get pregnant. Am I wrong? 😔
I’m doing that now, I have never had pcos until I got off birth control after 12 years. I developed pcos, and type 2 diabetes and I can’t get pregnant or lose weight. Now I have to get surgery to help me get pregnant, but in the meantime I put myself back on the pill.
Thank you! I think one of my questions on the pill and PCOS is that the pill is often pushed as a “cure”. If you don’t have a period regularly and are concerned about that, the Pill induces a pill bleed so that you think you get a regular period, but it’s just a mask, isn’t it? The pill doesn’t assist me to ovulate and regulate my hormones - in fact it has the same effect as PCOS which is to stop ovulation because it is a contraceptive. If I get off the Pill which is a short term measure, the PCOS is still there. If I ever have to get off the Pill, it doesn’t change anything. So how does the Pill help me fundamentally?
I hear that a lot of people are prescribed birth control pills as a "cure" which is so misleading. My current obgyn prescribed me pills and did make it clear that this will not necessarily cure pcos but it will help reduce the symptoms that I am experiencing(like facial hair\acne). we had a whole conversation about my options as someone who is not trying to conceive, other things I could do along with taking the pill. And we will change the treatment when I decide I want to try to become pregnant. It is so important to find an obgyn that understands pcos and is willing to help patients find the best plan for them.
@@kg-13131 Thank you for this perspective - I'm happy that you have a doctor who understands the nuances of PCOS. My perspective after talking to a few obgyns who may not have a speciality in hormones, is that they see the Pill as inducing a "period" and therefore "curing" the PCOS, but when I take a step back and think about it, these are not the same. A bleed on the pill is a withdrawal bleed from not consuming the hormones. It is not the same as having a full menstrual period, with the important hormonal pathways.
What is your symptoms of PCOS? I have it too and my period just never comes. I got on the pill to “regulate my period”. Recently, I got off it for a month and last week my period is suppose to start, but it hasn’t.
i’m 15 with pcos and insulin resistance, healthy weight and never consume lots of unhealthy foods, prescribed birth control today and i don’t know whether i should take it or not, do you know any alternative? i took inositol for 4 months but my period is still irregular.
Birthcontrol doesn't cause PCOS BUT......I had regular period until I went on the pills for 2 years then I stop mid pill pack and after that I had spotting for over 6 months. I visted the doctor, he told me I had immature eggs and diagnosed me with pcos but I did not have other common PCOS symptoms. He prescribe medication and hormones pills. I didnt take the pills prescribed, then my period got back regular and im okay. My friend on the other hand is experiencing symptoms and was diagnosed with PCOS and she missed her period for couple months and she never took take birth control.
Also Dr. Crawford, could you please also do a video on the general benefits / impact of Ovulation, outside of fertility? I am coming from the perspective of someone who is not trying to conceive, has only minor PCOS symptoms (slight weight gain, no hair loss/ gain, mild hormonal acne) but my cycles are long and I not be ovulating regularly (PCOS). The fertility angle is not something that is relevant to me at this time, but this seems to be the lens from which many doctors approach PCOS. Doctors have told me that since I don't have the classic PCOS symptoms and issues, and I'm not trying to get pregnant, that all I need to do is monitor my cycles and come back next year for a new scan. This is not helpful. Does my body benefit from hormones from ovulation, and how? Is ovulation important from a general health perspective, apart from fertility? If ovulation is important for my health overall, then is this something to consider and discuss when talking about going on the pill? What benefits am I losing out if I take the pill and stop my ovulation? Thanks!
Before taking the pill, I started at age 19, I had a normal period. No cramps, no PMS, regular period every month, etc. After taking the pill for 4 years, I was diagnosed with PCOS, so was the pill just bandaging up the symptoms? I know the pill didn’t cause it but, now at 25 I am having issues with ovulating every month and cannot get pregnant. I do not have insulin resistant PCOS, but all my doctor will suggest is loosing weight, when I lost 16 lbs it did not help me get my period back, so I am just lost at what options there are for me when it comes to getting back my period and ovulating regularly? Help!
I was on the pill for 9 years and before I was on the pill I had painful periods that lasted 7 days and heavy for almost the whole time. I would get terrible cramps and feel drained. I was on the pill 16-24. I also was on antidepressants starting at 16. I got off birth control September of 2021 and got a period from October 2021 to March 2022. From April-July I didn’t get a period. March of 2022 I started my antidepressants. I was given a pill to induce my period for blood work. I got it for august, spotted again a few weeks after and then got it in September and no period October or November. Idk if I always had this as a child or the pill triggered something. I’m gaining weight and my acne has never been like this. I don’t want to go on the pill again because I feel like it’s a bandaid like many of the women had said in the comments
They don’t tell you that the pill increases breast and cervical cancer. All she talks about is how it helps endometrial cancer a rare cancer anyway. I got insulin resistance from the birth control pill. It IS a side effect.
my doctor told me that since i’m having periods then im fertile. i’ve had people tell me that’s not true, but getting information from an actual obgyn would be much more helpful!
I had seen that post recently and kind of wondered where the info was coming from. I was put on birth control at 16 ans when i went off it at 28 I almost bought the "birth control cleanse" teas because it was heavily marketed to me on Instagram.
I get what youre saying but I never had any symptoms of pcos before i got on the pill. I was as regular as someone can be. However, after i got off of it, I never got my period back. Its been 7 months. I cant think of any other reason why i went from regular to amenorrhea.
I have PCOS. I didn’t have a period for a long time but I’m getting them now gratefully. I hope it keeps going. Now I get them like long and every month. Sometimes twice but mostly long and once a month. I take metformin to help me with it.
I got the depo shot 2 years ago one shot. And it caused me too have acanthosis nigricans and hair on face and body. High dheas and testosterone. Never had this before . What are your thoughts ???
If you have confirmed PCOS and are TTC, how long should you attempt prior to going in to seek treatment? I stopped taking continuous OCPs to TTC. I've never attempted pregnancy before!
I was super regular my whole life, never got any red flags with lab work done my whole adulthood, never had any pcos symptoms, and I’ve always had healthy periods that would last 4 days. I’ve had a healthy pregnancy at 25 and then went on the pill purely for contraception, not to stabilize my period or any other reason. I was only on it for 1.5 years and now I’m ready for baby #2 and so I went off the pill. I have not gotten my period for 5 months now after stopping the pill. Im now diagnosed with pcos. I’m convinced it’s the pill. Does anyone else have a similar story? Send help. 😭
Dr Crawford can you discuss lutenized unruptured follicle syndrome? I recently came across this topic in unexplained infertility and am unclear on how it relates to regular periods. Thank you!
love the explanation. could pregnancy hormones cause this? after my first child I was also put on a progesterone only BC as I was breastfeeding. since then 2012 I have had problems with facial hair on chin and acne along my jaw and the weight gain. I was only on the BC for 4 months then stopped because of the symptoms. maybe my hormones are just irregular now? what could cause this to happen when I didn't have the issue before pregnancy and no I wasn't on BC before my first child.
thank you so much for the video! I was diagnosed with pcos when i was 14. always had irregular periods. now I am pregnant, and i don´t want to go back to the pill again after having the baby :/ my guess is that my period will be irregular anyway so should i go back to the pill to preserve the uterus? Should I take the pill like forever to prevent cancer?
