Great simple find👍 if only there was a spray on fix for the horrible turning radius those machines have! Picked up a craftsman a couple years ago that appears to be from the same manufacturer. The steering has been my only complaint for $200😂

PawPaw...replaced my cast bushing bearings with ball bearings on the pivot points on both wheels. There are kits on Amazon and Ebay. Try this search find your size...about 2 hours to replace with a floor jack about a level 2 ez fix...your set up is faster..about 20 BUCKS and my rider feels like it has power steering...big difference from a big man. PAW paw rocks. SEARCH "rider mower Bushing to Bearing Conversion Kit"

Check your bushings where the axles mount in the front pivot bar, if I remember correctly they are plastic and could be worn out. The bushing the steering rod rides in could also be plastic. M T D used both metal and plastic bushings on the steering rods, so it would be hard to say which one yours has. They put that grey looking lithium grease on them on the assembly line, it lasts a good while.

If it dont squeek its duct tape if it squeeks it wd-40!! Of they dont work then its really busted!! Although a clean dry might not collect dirt and dust to bind up again ?
Greasing up that steering gear makes a world of difference. I usually put some on mine every year if I remember.
Old grease gets hard and the light oil helps soften it up so it can move again. I love your mower lift!
The steering geometry on those MTD's is borderline to start with.
