Brian, I’d be really interested to hear your story about how you initially got interested in lawn care. It could be a great winter video when there’s a lull in lawn activity.
Just overseeded with a 80-20 bluegrass p rye mix 2 1/2 weeks ago. Put down miloganite at a 4:1 ratio to seed on top of scotts turf builder lawn soil which has 8-3-2 in it. Not sure what i should put down next and when. Also not its only like 3 spots in whole 4500sq ft yard but spots where the new grass grew in pink and white
Question. I am really wanting to core aerate before overseeding but the ground is so stinking hard from this brutal summer heat. I don't have the irrigation to deeply soak it and although we had some good rain it wasn't enough. Can core aeration be done some other way?
Last year I aerated on Aug 30 on super hard hot ground. I applied a liquid aeration to the lawn a few days prior to core aerating to help loosen things a bit. If you don't have liquid aerate products you could try the baby shampoo route to try and soften the ground up a tad first. If you do core aerate with a bigger machine any amount of penetration they can get will be better than nothing though.
You're welcome Neil, don't do that otherwise none of your grass seed will come in. Prodiamine will stop all seedlings in their tracks, weeds and grass, that's why best option is to use mesotrione at time of seeding then again after seedlings are 10-14 days old along with fehedta spot spray on weeds. This combo will control most weeds during seedling establishment phase for most grass types.
@@TurfMechanic 😅. Great 👍🏾. Thanks for the advice. I just filled in a few bare spots after seeding ground and waiting for some smaller seeds to come in. I did buy Prodiamine but now will wait to put on in spring to not kill all of the work that was put in. You think spring would be safe? Fehedta will control for now.
@@SleepInnOK417 spring will be safe, fehedta will be your best bet, won't kill as effectively as chemicals but won't affect the grass so it's one of your only options, stay on top of mowing, goal is to not let the weeds that survive go to seed. Grass likes to be cut but weeds typically dont.
@@TurfMechanic Yes sir! I watched your video on when to mow new grass and plan on it in a couple of weeks. Sitting at around 2.5 to 3 inches right now but got to maintain the 1/3 rule like you mentioned.
How many pounds per 1,000 sq ft of alfalfa meal should you apply for cool season grass (TTTF)? should you still apply the 0.75 lb N formula per 1,000 sf and apply accordingly?
Good video, BUT, what do you do AFTER overseeding to complete the Fall N-blitz? Do you still do the fall fertilizing every 2 weeks? or because it's been over-seeded, it may damage the new seed?
I have very high phosphorous levels already. All the videos I have watched push adding starter fertilizer when over-seeding, which all have phosphorous. Would it be better for me to find a fertilizer that is high in nitrogen and potassium, but no phosphorous as I already have too much phosphorous? Thanks in advance.
I apply tenacity at the earliest possible interval in the seedling stage, my last use of tenacity was three rounds 18 days apart so I'd suggest doing it again...then later in the day or the next day spot spray or blanket spray the area with FeHEDTA, seedlings that are 10 days old should hold up to that just fine. This will attack all weeds with two different processes that should kill off most of them. Not all of them but most.
I know what you're talking about. I usually try to keep things tighter but occasionally viewers really apricate getting bigger overviews like this so I try to put them together from time to time. Instead of making a 45 min mega video I decided to break it up into slightly tighter topics to make individual video more applicable to the viewers. Also, I never advise people to buy all the stuff I buy; as a creator in lawn care I feel it's my responsibility to own and experiment with as much as possible to increase my own knowledge and understanding of the various inputs available to lawn owners. Even today with my reach I still have to purchase most things I use in my lawn; it adds up. I spent nearly $300 just experimenting with a few different brands of BioChar, something I don't think I even mentioned in this video! Enjoy your lawn Tom!

Thanks for all the wonderful videos. Learning a ton. When would you recommend adding Prodiamine after seeding?

Yeah, if your soils are already rich in phosphorus then just skip that, potassium is still important though.
@@TurfMechanic Thank you so much for your help.
I used tenacity before overseeding. My seed is growing. I still have quite a few weeds. How can I best treat the weeds at this point?

to me your putting to much out in one video.then all those products dont come free.
