      @@sharpie132 Honestly, 2-3 weeks ago. You could still try but temps are dropping fast and the grass needs time to harden of before Frost. I am directly East of you and I overseeded KBG on 9/4. If you are overseeding with Rye Grass or TTTF than it will have a better chance to get up and semi matured before Frost, KBG is truly a full 3 weeks for full germination and 1st cut. Temps will play a big roll from now on with germination! Peace, From Upstate NY

    I live on Long Island, NY. Just did the NST on my lawn instead of overseeding. I put down Scotts winter fertilizer at rate of 1 pound per 1000 square feet every two weeks for 5 weeks. Last application was December 10. It is now the beginning of January and my lawn has never looked better. It is still lush and green. Neighbors lawns have already lost their color. Hopefully it continue through the spring and summer 2023. I last cut my lawn at 3 inches late November. After late November while still dark green there was no additional growth.

      So I did this last year and since I've read a couple studies and have talked with some people who actually ran experiments on this. Both the studies and the experiments didn't show any differences between areas that got the final "winterizer" app and the areas that did not. Just things I've read, so your experience may be different. Thanks for watching BMac!

    Hi Jesse, I just wanted to thank you for this video. I viewed it last year in the fall and followed your advice to the T and my lawn has really reaped the benefits from it during that season and into spring this year especially. I kid you not bro, my lawn was the one and only lawn that had early green up back in March of this year on my entire block. A lot of the small bare spots I had last year during the blitz filled in then during the process of the applications. I really can’t wait to see what you have in store for us this year man. Great video... this year was tough on drought and summer... but i did perform core aeration+overseed+starter fert in late spring... didn't get good results i got infested with crabgrass... how ever i did follow up with milorgonatite and ironite before summer stress did ok for about 3 weeks... now i knew my last chance was this fall and sure enough august 1st i sprayed down tenacity... and end of august did core aeration+overseed+starter fertilizer.... watered it in good... and 3 weeks later got some amazing results compared to spring.. did my first mow mid September...now my question is..
    Can i fertilizer with heavy nitrogen even tho my overseed just germinated... and if so do i need to water in the nitrogen to keep helping the germinated grass keep establishing..

    Can you go over starter fert vs regular fert? I'm doing an overseed on an established and from popular consensus it's best to put that down a week or so after seeding so the old grass doesn't out grow the new stuff. Does starter fert act the same as regular fert for already established grass or should I get something different for the established grass down the line?

    • @LAWNLIFE
      @LAWNLIFE  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      What you're really trying to give the new grass with starter fert is the phosphorus that's in it. Phosphorus helps stimulate root growth, that's why people throw down the starter fert. If you've done a soil test and your phosphorus levels are ideal, you don't even need to put down the start fert.
      As for what to use for your established grass going forward, I would recommend getting a soil test so you know what you need or don't need. Otherwise you're just throwing down and hoping at that point (ignore the Nitrogen levels in the soil test though, you want to concentrate on everything else because nitrogen comes and goes so fast). I should just make a video on this like you said lol.
      Let me know if you're confused by any of this.

    • @delt19
      @delt19 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Startert usually has fast release nitrogen. For purpose of feeding the lawn with enough Nitrogen to get it through the winter you'll need a fertilizer that's slow release in Nitrogen that way you're not just pushing top growth but giving your lawn enough nutrients to withstand the winter and spring up nicely.

    Last fall, I did not do any type of lawn prep as I typically do. Coming into the spring, my lawn is not dense and thick. At the time of this message, it's April 2nd, 2023.
    My question is, can I overseed to thicken up the lawn and make it more dense at this point since it's early in the spring? If so, what products would you recommend? Today was my first cut, so I dethatched the lawn, gathered all the clippings in my lawn mower and now I'm ready to overseed and fertilize... Does that sound like a good plan? Is 46-0-0 too strong of a fertilizer to use on seed?

    Hey Jesse,
    Want to ask this so I don't mess up my current progress. I dethatched and then scarrified my lawn about two and a half weeks ago. Then put down lime, seed, starter fert and topsoil about ten or 12 days ago. The grass is coming in pretty well but I'm wondering, since it's new grass, Can I still start this nitrogen regimen this year, or would it be too much for the new grass? would I run the risk of burning it? Lastly, how long should I wait before doing the first application of nitro? Thanks!

    If I want to apply the urea or ammonium sulfate by spraying, how much water do you use to dissolve 0.5 lbs to cover 1,000 sf? A gallon of water, 2 gallons...? I've watched several videos of people mixing products to spray on their lawn, but all they show is their bucket of water and mixing in whatever they happen to be spraying at the time. They never say how much water they're using, or how much territory they're spraying. It's all quite confusing.

    • @LAWNLIFE
      @LAWNLIFE  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      For young grass I would definitely use granular to start. I wouldn't spray anything on them for at least 60 days unless you're going to water in right away. The best way to calibrate your sprayer is to fill it up with water and practice going different speeds in your lawn until you're consistently covering your area and ending up empty or very close to it. You'll never be consistently perfect, but you definitely want to be close at least.

      The starter fert recommendation is mainly for the phosphorus in it. So if you don't know your phosphorus levels, I would definitely put down to starter just to be safe. After that you can start feeding the grass small amounts of N every two weeks or so (0.25 lbs per K)

    Any idea on why I have so many different types of grass? I try to keep my lawn pretty well maintained but I keep getting dandelions, crab grass, wild onions and mushrooms growing in my front yard. I would love to have an action plan for my yard before winter comes. Btw I live in Kentucky and I’m on clay if that helps.
    I would seriously appreciate your help.

      Same. I put down sod a few seasons ago and its already covered in crab grass, dandelions and other weeds.
      I cant get rid of them.

    If we wanted to apply Urea with a backpack sprayer how would you go about doing that? Use 0.25 pounds per 1k per week and water it in??

    • @LAWNLIFE
      @LAWNLIFE  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes. After 4 hours water it in. You're safe from burn at .25 but don't go any higher than that. That's the max

      @stealthcomp14 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LAWNLIFE thank you! If we don't have a sprinkler system do you have to wait for rain in-between granular applications? Wouldn't the granules just accumulate and cause burn if it didn't rain for a month? Or will morning dew be enough?

    • @LAWNLIFE
      @LAWNLIFE  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The reason I don't like doing that is because the max you can put down .2 lbs of nitrogen if you're putting it down foliar. Otherwise you need to water it in immediately if you're putting more than that down. It's risky business in my opinion

    If you get a fertilizer with a slow release component is there a risk of burning your lawn or just wasting nitrogen since we are so close to winter? I’m in MN too and picked up the menards 3rd app fertilizer which is 30% nitrogen and like 9% slow release. I’m wanting to hammer my lawn hard to get it to thicken up if I can.

    It just seems there’s a lot of nitrogen from a lot of differ t products. You have great videos, but you talk about ammonia sulfate, urea, Sistine. You talk about granular vs diluted and being sprayed. You talk about different times of the year, when to, when not to. You have great knowledgeable video as. You should put together some type of grass planner, for different types of grasses or at least Bermuda. There’s so much about fertilizing, I’m just not sure what and when. Thank you, and once again great video

      Stick with the starter fert or anything with phosphorus. If you have high phosphorus levels you probably do not need anything, but you can put down starter to be safe

      Kind of spendy for a 16 lb bag. Putting it on at 3 lbs per k you're only getting .21 lbs of N. I don't doubt that it has a great effect with the green up with the iron and nitrogen it has in it. I just wouldn't pay $35 for a 16 lb bag of it.
