How to replace front suspension on Mercedes GL/ML (X164/W164)

  • A quick DIY on how to replace the front suspension components (upper control arm, ball joint and tie rod) on the 2006-2012 Mercedes-Benz GL and ML class SUV (X164/W164 chassis) without removing of the Airmatic suspension parts (shock and air springs).
    Tools needed:
    Wrenches, screw drivers, hammer, pliers, pipe wrenches, torque wrench, breaker bar, torch
    #9 HEX (to remove the brake calipers)
    #36 socket (to remove the shaft nut)
    Parts:
    Complete URO parts kit W1648PCKIT from www.RockAuto.com including:

    A very good guide. However, I would recommend using more penetrating oil to loosen up those rusty parts.

    Thank you! Just got a gl350 bluetec as a project and am in the process of lower balljoints. Without any writeup, and how seized they were..i seriously thought i was missing a c clip or something i couldnt see. I'll keep heating and hammering away! Thanks!

      Haha yeah pressure fit is a bit of a strange way to install them

    You skipped exactly what I'm having problems with. How did you get access to the nut on the rear of the upper driver's control arm bolt? My X164 has all kinds of crap blocking the way from above so I can't even SEE the nut with a flashlight, let alone got a socket on it to hold it and remove the bolt and hold one in place to put the new bolt in.

    Another way to not cut the bolt is to release the air of the air bag by untighten the screw from up of the strut. That’s the way that I do. Sorry my Bad english.in this way the bolt will come out very easy

      This one is 09 - same stuff until 2013 and even the x166 is pretty much the same

    Bro nice im glad you put this video...i got my lower control arm i wasnt sure if the air shock need to be bleed out..but i guess not great...question beside the SAM(under the hood) or the height stabilizer what other things control it.. Malfunction light for air suspension wont go up fuse and relay are good

      @@ETMotorsports i was able to scan the suspension system. Install the new pump and plug back in the relay nothing change. I notice smoke coming out from the engine fuse box. I order another one i got today. Unfortunately they send me the wrong one....now i cant scan that system at all.

    You don't need to cut the bolt, just deflate the spring loosing the air line on the top, and the bolt will go out!

    All you had to do was remove the 1 lower strut bolt and nut to lower control arm and bolts come right out easily!

    Next time release the air from the air bag slides right out

      Hey - great suggestion...when I did the job I didn't have a programmer that was able to deflate the bag without unhooking the air line at the top and I didn't want to unhook the line because I wasn't sure if it will be able to seal after that...In retrospect I should have replaced the shocks and bags at the same time, which would have made a lot more sense...
