Only a few people who upload videos regularly have the uncanny knack of speaking about interesting subjects in a way that is so intelligent and yet still so down to earth and comfortable, so naturally entertaining just being themselves that it does almost seem like they're talking to me,, sitting in front of me here in my home so that, yes, it very much becomes a kind of regular "visit" I look forward to so much. Territorial bites make sense. The same is true of land preditors. Lions, and other big cats, bears, if you are in their territory you are going to get bit or worse. I don't understand why the shark experts don't see it. Glad you're back Hal. 🙂❤️🦈
By the animals perspective it makes all the sense: "if another big animal is near me, that can mean less food for me, so im gonna get rid of him". We are bigger than seals. I dont think they mistake us with seals
Especially if there's seals, fish or other prey nearby. I've heard the theory that the shark will attack if that's the case because it thinks that we're a rival to steal the food that the shark considers theirs. Which is a tie in with the territorial reason.
The Heather Boswell video has haunted me since the first time i watched it. Somehow that one is still creepier to me than the 2 more recent ones in Australia and Egypt..even though the Egypt one looked like something straight out of Jaws!
Aloha Hal & Mrs Hal!😊 According to research; Sharks can go days, weeks, months, and sometimes up to a year without eating. It sounds like their metabolism is slow, so they don't need to be constantly "on the hunt." The beautiful Drone videos by YT's "The Malibu Artist" show sharks constantly cruising in/near the shallows alongside and very near to people. He has a rare video of Sharks hunting for Sting Rays (this is when they are in the shallower sections cruising the bottom). Maybe kids seem to be attacked due to being in the shallower sections, and sharks being attracted to their constant/unusual movements/noises in the water? I work with visitors here in Hawaii. They often ask me about swimming/ snorkeling areas and 🦈 in those areas. I recommend them swimming in the Lifeguarded beaches, as they will display signs when Sharks are spotted. I also refer them to the stats on our State website; (I think I told you awhile back about it); the DLNR (Department Of Land & Natural Resources) for Shark attacks on the different islands/beaches categorized by years/ attacks/areas of attack. One thing I know is that Maui (over last 30 yrs), has had 58 documented attacks. Fifty -eight? It could be that (maybe) Maui waters are some type of breeding ground for Tiger Sharks? I have a family member who was a Maui Paramedic for 30 yrs. She quit/retired around when Covid started; citing two things as the reasons; Covid & the many Shark attacks she was called to in Maui waters. Great to see you! 😊
An average of a couple attacks annually for Maui sounds pretty standard considering the amount of people in the water there. It seems a strange reason to quit being a paramedic over. There are five species of shark that have warm-blooded capabilities, and the associated higher metabolism: short/long fin mako, salmon, porbeagle and great whites. A large great white would need to eat fairly regularly to survive.

I agree. Like when my big dog used to step on my little terrier boy and he'd go off like the little terrorist he could be and tear into her. Can't really blame him. She was WAY bigger than him and getting stepped on by her could be painful even for us humans.
....Good to see you're back ! Thinking about it, "when" I use to swim in the ocean ... I would go out and just tread water while chatting with my friends. I'm wondering if those sharks that eat people actually have a preference for humans? The poor guy who was eaten in Egypt, it was said that it was a pregnant tiger shark, suggesting because she was pregnant she wasn't able to hunt in her usual way, and Vladimir was easy prey....also mentioned the authorities believed it was the same shark that killed two others just weeks before. After watching Sharks Happen, " IF ": I were to go into the ocean, I wouldn't go spearfishing and I would stay out of the deep water.
The two others were killed a year ago. So not likely to be the same shark. Besides, if sharks developed a preference for human prey, as Hal discusses in the video, we'd be seeing a LOT more humans being taken. I'm not sure that pregnancy suggests a shark can't hunt normally? I think it suggests the shark is more likely to be hungry.
I also read that the pregnant tiger shark attack on mr popov in Egypt was literally starving when they killed her his remains were the only thing she had in her stomach. God knows how long it had been since she ate a meal and was likely trying to keep her baby and herself alive as callous as that sounds.

You need your own shark week show on Discovery man. Me and a buddy were chatting this weekend about how good shark week used to be but now it's all cheesy reality show crap, like the megalodon special they aired almost a decade back.. that killed it for me. As a kid I remember the actual survivor documentaries with the accounts caught on tape. (Edit: lol Eric Ritter!!!! That's exactly the show I'm talking about!)
Do sharks play? Maybe; Some attacks I notice might be. There was a guy who got bitten off Pebble Beach; the diver was hunting for lobster. He noticed a big great white at the limits of his vision. Every time he saw it, it moved away further away until it was out of view. When the diver surfaced, then moved in and bit him. Almost as if it wanted to see if they could get close enough to avoid being spotted. In other cases, there's a diver who filmed a 'teenage' great white rising up towards a spear fisherman at one of the Channel Islands (Catalina?); it looked like it was starting to make a 'rush', but when the diver 'faced' the shark, the demeanor changed, it peeled away and began to swim parallel to him--almost like it was saying 'hah, just kidding'. Same with a diver who swam outside of a cage in South Australia==he even hitched a ride by holding on to the white shark's fin. When it got him far enough from the cage, it suddenly made an abrupt turn toward the diver. The diver was too far from the cage to run, so he held his ground and faced the shark==and the shark just 'relaxed' and cruised past him.
Lol your funny stories at the end part sounded so much like something that'd happen to me,if I was fishing.... our family had 7 daughters and always whatever should never happen to anybody would happen to one of us all our lives. Your Dad must get a big kick out of things like those when they happen to you.

I watched a show about sharks on the History channel that sharks have 4 behaviors/attacks, this is for great whites. 1. Curiousity 2. Territorial 3. Practice attacks 4. To eat. Basically what Hal is saying.
@SharksHappen Hall I've been listening to you for a couple of years since lockdowns. Keep fighting sir. So when I consider territorial attacks, especially Juvenile great whites on surfers I think its highly plausible they practice just like young tigers or lions

Excellent story teller and you are very knowledgeable. Great channel. I'm 51, I grew up in Ventura, California, home to the Great White. Thousands of hours I spent surfing, swimming, boogie boarding and never thought about a shark. I wonder how many times one was near me.
I can’t stand it when they say shark attacks are rare as some sore of justification for them not eating humans. I was a lifeguard for years and lived on a boat on the ocean for 20 years. The only reason they’re “rare” is because 99.9% of the human population is on land at all times.

Hey Hal! I love the steady stream of content lately. I’m hoping you’ll cover this recent fatality in the Red Sea last month of Russian tourist Vladimir Popov, 23 years old. They dragged the poor pregnant tiger shark to the beach where the father of the victim beat it to death. The current theory is that it may have been attracted to shallower waters by people trying to feed it or it was lured there by illegally dumped animal carcasses. There’s also a shortage of food from overfishing, and now they’re culling tiger sharks which are only doing what they’re made to do. I don’t know if you’ve seen the video yet but holy shit, I will NEVER hear Stand by Me by Ben E. King and be the same again. That, to me, is the eeriest part of the video, this man screaming “Papa!” as hes mauled and consumed to Leiber and Stollers beautiful, orchestral, instrumental masterpiece in Ben E Kings Stand by Me, while jackass onlookers record it on their cell phones.
If you’re ever in Orlando there’s a nice lake I used in Kissimmee lake ToHo. Nice community off OBT. Bait Shop. Lots of huge bass. Red Fin Pickerel. Maybe some chain pickerel. Lots of black Crappie off the dock. Huge alligator Gar. And yes towards the evenings you’ll see the crocs start cruising. Bass Masters use this lake. IVE seen 10LB bass caught here. Bass master told me if a bass was big enough he’d eat me. On the Orlando side there’s some chain ponds and lakes called turkey lake. They are good too.
The attacks at Sharm al-Sheik were done by separate sharks. Before someone decides that was a rogue shark. An Oceanic White-Tip and a Mako are separate species. Don't go there!
Hal, welcome back! I have a couple of questions for you. First, I have heard the theory that pregnant female shark are more likely to attack humans than other sharks. It seems that the recent horrible attack on the young Russian in Egypt, as well as the two attacks last year on women in the Red Sea, were all done by pregnant female Tiger sharks. The reasoning behind the theory is that pregnant females are slower when hunting than they might otherwise be, and that they’re more apt to hunt slower prey, like humans. Any thoughts? Second: there’s a video on TH-cam that shows a diver who says that he’s befriended a Tiger shark whom he’s named Emma, in the Bahamas. There’s video of him petting Emma, who swims right up to him and hangs out like a friendly dog. I’d love your take on that. (I believe the video is on the Dodo site.)
I'm in San Diego. I met a surfer who said his surfer friend has a "girlfriend" that's a tiger shark: whenever he goes out to surf, this tiger shark will come out and hang out with him, and only him.

Cool, thanks Hal. Made my own halibut fish and chips while listening to you. I caught the halibut in Alaska and the potatoes I grew in the yard :) Really got good at frying fish this year! I do a corn starch/flower mix with about 10 spices. I use a backyard chicken egg. And combine panko with Parmesan to do an outer coating.

Of course it's possible, it's also improbable. There are an estimated 1500 White sharks on the West coast of Australia that call it home base. Then there are visitors and passers by and this is just one species that can turn you into a paragraph in the obituaries. I imagine much of the conjecture re: White shark behaviour is probably correct to varying degrees. eg: Misidentification? Sure, occasionally from inexperience. Or. Nope, hungry. Or. Oh yeah, been waiting for one of these floating fatties. Predation? Absolutely. Or. Some don't have a taste for us... if they're starving however. Or. Nope. You just got in the way. Territorial? Absolutely. Or. Absolutely. May as well eat, too. Or. Sure. Don't want to eat you but interlopers get an arse kicking. Or. Sure. Sorry I killed you. Didn't realise you're so soft and just wanted you gone. Such a scenario would apply to curiosity, too a.k.a a test bite. Appreciate anyone whom read this far. Just thinking aloud. Cheers big ears ;)

You need your own shark week show on Discovery man. Me and a buddy were chatting this weekend about how good shark week used to be but now it's all cheesy reality show crap, like the megalodon special they aired almost a decade back.. that killed it for me. As a kid I remember the actual survivor documentaries with the accounts caught on tape. (Edit: lol Eric Ritter!!!! That's exactly the show I'm talking about!)
Do sharks play? Maybe; Some attacks I notice might be. There was a guy who got bitten off Pebble Beach; the diver was hunting for lobster. He noticed a big great white at the limits of his vision. Every time he saw it, it moved away further away until it was out of view. When the diver surfaced, then moved in and bit him. Almost as if it wanted to see if they could get close enough to avoid being spotted.
In other cases, there's a diver who filmed a 'teenage' great white rising up towards a spear fisherman at one of the Channel Islands (Catalina?); it looked like it was starting to make a 'rush', but when the diver 'faced' the shark, the demeanor changed, it peeled away and began to swim parallel to him--almost like it was saying 'hah, just kidding'. Same with a diver who swam outside of a cage in South Australia==he even hitched a ride by holding on to the white shark's fin. When it got him far enough from the cage, it suddenly made an abrupt turn toward the diver. The diver was too far from the cage to run, so he held his ground and faced the shark==and the shark just 'relaxed' and cruised past him.
Lol your funny stories at the end part sounded so much like something that'd happen to me,if I was fishing.... our family had 7 daughters and always whatever should never happen to anybody would happen to one of us all our lives. Your Dad must get a big kick out of things like those when they happen to you.

I watched a show about sharks on the History channel that sharks have 4 behaviors/attacks, this is for great whites. 1. Curiousity 2. Territorial 3. Practice attacks 4. To eat. Basically what Hal is saying.
1- territorial, 2- Eat 3- everything else. First 2 make up 80 percent of attacks

So when I consider territorial attacks, especially Juvenile great whites on surfers I think its highly plausible they practice just like young tigers or lions

Excellent story teller and you are very knowledgeable. Great channel. I'm 51, I grew up in Ventura, California, home to the Great White. Thousands of hours I spent surfing, swimming, boogie boarding and never thought about a shark. I wonder how many times one was near me.
I still get the heebee jeebees thinking about a white shark near me while swimming the Pacific in La Jolla lol.

I can’t stand it when they say shark attacks are rare as some sore of justification for them not eating humans. I was a lifeguard for years and lived on a boat on the ocean for 20 years. The only reason they’re “rare” is because 99.9% of the human population is on land at all times.

Hey Hal! I love the steady stream of content lately. I’m hoping you’ll cover this recent fatality in the Red Sea last month of Russian tourist Vladimir Popov, 23 years old.
They dragged the poor pregnant tiger shark to the beach where the father of the victim beat it to death.
The current theory is that it may have been attracted to shallower waters by people trying to feed it or it was lured there by illegally dumped animal carcasses. There’s also a shortage of food from overfishing, and now they’re culling tiger sharks which are only doing what they’re made to do.
I don’t know if you’ve seen the video yet but holy shit, I will NEVER hear Stand by Me by Ben E. King and be the same again. That, to me, is the eeriest part of the video, this man screaming “Papa!” as hes mauled and consumed to Leiber and Stollers beautiful, orchestral, instrumental masterpiece in Ben E Kings Stand by Me, while jackass onlookers record it on their cell phones.
If you’re ever in Orlando there’s a nice lake I used in Kissimmee lake ToHo. Nice community off OBT. Bait Shop. Lots of huge bass. Red Fin Pickerel. Maybe some chain pickerel. Lots of black Crappie off the dock. Huge alligator Gar. And yes towards the evenings you’ll see the crocs start cruising. Bass Masters use this lake. IVE seen 10LB bass caught here. Bass master told me if a bass was big enough he’d eat me. On the Orlando side there’s some chain ponds and lakes called turkey lake. They are good too.
The attacks at Sharm al-Sheik were done by separate sharks. Before someone decides that was a rogue shark. An Oceanic White-Tip and a Mako are separate species. Don't go there!
The latest attack where a russian young man was eaten alive was a tiger shark.
Pregers tiger shark was responsible for june 2023 and july 2022.

I have a couple of questions for you.
First, I have heard the theory that pregnant female shark are more likely to attack humans than other sharks.
It seems that the recent horrible attack on the young Russian in Egypt, as well as the two attacks last year on women in the Red Sea, were all done by pregnant female Tiger sharks. The reasoning behind the theory is that pregnant females are slower when hunting than they might otherwise be, and that they’re more apt to hunt slower prey, like humans. Any thoughts?
Second: there’s a video on TH-cam that shows a diver who says that he’s befriended a Tiger shark whom he’s named Emma, in the Bahamas. There’s video of him petting Emma, who swims right up to him and hangs out like a friendly dog. I’d love your take on that. (I believe the video is on the Dodo site.)
Good point about the pregnant sharks. That egypt attack was definitely to predate.
Don’t discount that when most women or female animals are pregnant, our hormones are very sensitive and all-over the place!
I heard on shark week documentary that the metabolism is workin double-time in preg. Female shsrks, making tbem ravenously hungry.
I'm in San Diego. I met a surfer who said his surfer friend has a "girlfriend" that's a tiger shark: whenever he goes out to surf, this tiger shark will come out and hang out with him, and only him.

Really got good at frying fish this year! I do a corn starch/flower mix with about 10 spices. I use a backyard chicken egg. And combine panko with Parmesan to do an outer coating.
Awesome. I just started using corn starch when frying some foods. Nice thin crisp layer, especially with shrimp

As to the same shark attacking a year later or whatever interval. People can say the dumbest shit sometimes. Of course it's possible, it's also improbable. There are an estimated 1500 White sharks on the West coast of Australia that call it home base. Then there are visitors and passers by and this is just one species that can turn you into a paragraph in the obituaries.
I imagine much of the conjecture re: White shark behaviour is probably correct to varying degrees. eg:
Misidentification? Sure, occasionally from inexperience. Or. Nope, hungry. Or. Oh yeah, been waiting for one of these floating fatties.
Predation? Absolutely. Or. Some don't have a taste for us... if they're starving however. Or. Nope. You just got in the way.
Territorial? Absolutely. Or. Absolutely. May as well eat, too. Or. Sure. Don't want to eat you but interlopers get an arse kicking. Or. Sure. Sorry I killed you. Didn't realise you're so soft and just wanted you gone. Such a scenario would apply to curiosity, too a.k.a a test bite.
