@@gunslinger1108 The re-usable stick- or board-tree to lego- or dovetail together recurrently that could replace the annual throw-away christmas fir. I made those in different sizes some decades ago and gave those away in the family and to friends, but people generally found it "not the real thing" enough to actually abstain from fir and spruce. There's probably not any more conservative time during the year than christmas and newyear no matter how "progressive" people seem to be all the other weeks 😁
when cutting multiple "dowel" type things I tend to tape them together with blue tape (sort of making a bigger log) and use my table saw sled. With 8 or 10 taped together they don't fly off after the cut. Then I just untape them.

As the sphere is hollow you should put a message inside on a metal plaque that’s glued in that could be X-rayed by future archeology buffs for their enjoyment and bafflement 😁 merry Christmas
You can project the v-carve on to a spherical surface so it is deeper towards the sides of the pentagon, so when you turn everything down, they are about the same depth everywhere.

Thinking like one of those flat pack wooden puzzles that you can slot together to make a bike or a T-Rex. Something like that seems like it would be perfect for you to make with your CNC.

Merry Christmas, Happy New Year... oh and as for the orb being a bit too big, this is easily solved by a much larger larger Christmas tree. LOL, or it could be a table display, use that wooden cup thing as a base. As a different approach, let's say you made it differently, and used colored plastic rods, wouldn't it be neat if it could be lit internally and the light shows through the color circles? Anyway, what you've made is far beyond my skill level and I appreciate watching a master make a masterpiece. Thanks so much. Cheers!

I'm curious about the v-carving on a sphere you mentioned - would you carve into the sphere using the 4th axis once it's already a roughed-out sphere shape, or would you v-carve into the segments while they're still flat? Also love the quip at the end about how did this get so big - got me wondering, how small do you think you could scale down your general turning operation? Could you make something as small as a normal tree ornament?
Love seeing each year's ornament and the ways you are exploring the sphere crafting. Since I know it won't be your last, I had a thought: you're sanding down all those tabs (60 operations) after cutting the pentagons out because you need to register against the stops for your beveling jig. But what if you route a little rebate on those stops to make enough of a notch for the tabs to slide into. That should at least work for the 'show face up' jig, right?

Now that your sled is cutting with the face up, Couldn't you do a spherical 3D profile on the pentagons. So the glue up is just a bunch of domed pieces.

Can you put cups on the cnc, perhaps with hot glue or equivalent, to rotate the piece and get the ball perfectly round before moving to the lathe?

Watching your programmed router cut down the excess inlays flush. Fancy tech & Im here in my shop and my only tool option is JP hand razor saw 😅
