Was half expecting you to sneak in the "suckmyballs" at the very end, but I respect you wanting to carry the emotional tone all the way through haha this cover was absolutely incredible. There's only a select few times where songs have pushed me to tearing up and the last half of this performance was easily one of those times. Thank you for such an awesome display of talent
I don’t know if you all realize just how impressive this really is. Cuz when Spencer records all the vocals for these songs, he literally does it line by line. To be able to produce a performance of this masterpiece in such a fuckin flawless continuous no-cuts at all inarguably consummate execution is truly perfection in every sense of the word. I mean I listened to this like 12 times now and there’s not a single crack in his voice, flat note, any of the countless weird things that like glitch in our vocal folds during vocal fry as well as (I think the most impressive feat in this cover) nailing even the false cord screams.
For those of you who aren’t vocalists, these tend to be the most difficult of all these methods...example, I made a cover of Periphery - Letter Experiment just a couple years after the first album was released and Spencer probably hadn’t learned how to do it yet either cuz there’s NONE of it heard on that album. I had at one point done vocal covers of half the album (I believe just Letter Experiment and Icarus Lives are the only ones I left up since I started steering towards doing mainly guitar covers, and I was never able to do a Periphery drum cover, I have several Meshuggah ones, but Halpern is on another level entirely...
Anyway, that was like 7 or 8 years ago. I STILL can’t false cord scream...correctly anyway. In a pinch, I’ll just do it the only way I can and it sounds good but if I need to go back into cleans afterward, it’s very difficult cuz I start losing my voice (cuz I’m not doing it correctly and probably damaging my vocal cords which is why I rarely do this). I haven’t really been able to do any vocal covers of any songs from P2 onward cuz Spencer just kept getting better and better and believe me I try but I’ve hit my wall and I’m fine with that lol. I’ve got my 8 string covers to do now (check out my Stranger Things cover).
This guy here...he seamlessly jumps from all these methods, fry, false cord, cleans low and high...just in ways I really didn’t think was possible honestly. And also, I’ve seen Periphery live a few times and other than the first time (where Spencer was sick and they just did an instrumental performance...which pissed me off cuz I went specifically to see if he could pull all those crazy high notes off live) he can, for sure...but I have yet to see an example of a truly PERFECT performance of a song by Spencer, and I understand there’s a huge difference between one song and a set, but even just focusing on the first song of the set, there will be something, usually almost undetectable to normal people (referring to my OCD) but it’s still there. This was perfect, again. The only other bit of info I’d like to know (depending on the answer whether or not I decide you’re either inhuman or an android) is how many takes you did. Anyway, sorry I know this is long but I had a lot to say about it cuz I was beyond impressed (and yes, I’ve most likely developed a man-crush on you...these things happen...I apologize. LoL!)

Sköll Devours wow!... I honestly don’t have the words to thank you for writing this all out for me. I really appreciate how much you’ve enjoyed this performance, I didn’t think I’d ever get someone this excited about the music I do! I’ll clarify a couple things though just in terms of transparency: most of the vocals you’re hearing are layered, where I would go line by line and record additional overdubs to make the lines stronger, ranging from 2 to 5 dubs. Most every singer does this nowadays. Though, there are a couple points in the cover where I left only one vocal line: 1;13 “left in the arms of the living I shake”, some of the “corrode” lines, the final scream “we’re going underrrrr”. Also, I do use melodyne to correct off notes when they happen, don’t wanna make it seem like my pitch is absolutely perfect all the time when it’s not! For my screams though yeah I think my technique is decent enough that I don’t really glitch anymore, so that part is true! Thank you so much for noticing that!
I don’t wanna seem dishonest by saying that everything here was live and in one take when it wasn’t! Especially for studio recording, it’s all about the best possible final product. Yes Im able to jump from singing techniques pretty smoothly (comes with a lot of practice and good technique) and I’d be able to record a “decent” one-shot recording of the song, though it wouldn’t be as good as what I have here...
But your comment has got me thinking: maybe I should do a cover where I do it all in one take, with no overdubbed or back up vocals, just to show what I can do... I think the best song for this would be Given Up by Linkin Park... actually yeah I’m definitely gonna do this! Once again thank you so much for your comment, it truly means a lot to me! It inspired me to actually pull off what you’re praising me for here, so yeah trust me one day in the near future when I release a cover of Given Up by Linkin Park, it will have been all one take! Then I’ll let you know how many tries it took! Cheers!

Oh crap. I didn’t mean to like set this high standard for you that you feel like you need to achieve now cuz of the length and detail of my comment. Honestly it’s like a problem I have writing comments way too long that I’m surprised you read it lol. A lot of people take one look at it and say “f that noise” but i don’t know I tend to have a lot to say. And I see what you mean about the finished product verses the like “look what I can do!” performance of the song all in one take with no overdubs, which is something I didn’t even consider. But yeah your screams (just listening to the very last one since it’s all by itself) have improved vastly, which I’m not surprised by. It happened to Spencer too between P1 and P2 most significantly. And I had a significant improvement in my screams just between my Icarus Lives cover and my Letter Experiment cover. But unfortunately, I have such crappy equipment. Cuz guitar is my main thing. So I didn’t continue trying to improve my vocals over the past 6 months or so...and I’ve LOST some of it. My vocal fry sounds like crap again so apparently it’s not like guitar where you can put it down for a year to focus on vocals and drums and also a gaming addiction didn’t help lol, then pick it back up like a day didn’t go by.
Ok before I start to make this unreadably long again, I still think after the clarification the fact that you can do this at all. And also hit the G5 (which I actually managed to hit just last night but I think I was having a super good day/night vocally...I’m sure you know what I mean). That G5 is otherworldly. I got emotional when I heard it the first time. It was really weird lol. Not normal for me. I’ll alter the original comment if you want and sort of back off on some of the misinformed (or rather, not yet informed) details if you like. But either way to hear you do Given Up now would be sick. Cuz that’s got that note that goes on for if I remember correctly 17 seconds. I’m looking forward to that whichever way you plan to do it (like how you did this one or one take) it should be awesome. I’m subscribed now so I know when that happens :)

You're right that Spencer's improvement from P1 to P2 was absolutely incredible, and if my math is correct that transformation occurred when spencer was my age currently which is kinda funny! And yes, the 17 second long scream in Given Up is gonna be quite something but I did it before when I tried singing along so it'll be cool to record it! Chester's 2nd anniversary of his death is on July 20 [rest in peace :( ] so I'm thinking of dropping that cover as a second tribute of mine to him (first one being my cover of numb from two years ago). So keep an eye out for that

Victor Borba it’s any G5 really...apparently. Cuz at the risk of sounding like a bitch I’ll admit to actually breaking down when I saw/heard Devin Townsend (who I’m not necessarily a fan of cuz of his attitude and personality but his music can be phenomenal at times so I respect him as a musician for sure) he hit the G5 in a LIVE performance of Deadhead (at the Royal Albert Hall). If you’re curious if you haven’t seen it yet just search that. It shouldn’t be hard to find. I’m sure it has millions of views. But I don’t think he’s human for real. He’s gotta be one a them autonoma-tonomatons. His voice sounds so strange once he reaches that mezzo-soprano register and beyond I believe it’d be impossible to replicate no matter how good someone is. I don’t know, if you know this performance I’m referring to or decide to check it out, you tell me. You’re the expert here...

Oh I tried to make a tribute cover of Shadow of the Day 2 years ago and the fuckin thing got blocked worldwide. It almost pissed me off as much as my acoustic guitar cover of The Rain Song by Led Zeppelin I did in memory of my first fiancé who killed himself in 2008 on the 10 year anniversary of his death cuz that song was a bitch to learn then it gets blocked worldwide. That was a true kick in the balls. It was our song.
