This is craft. Craft brings satisfaction for its own sake. There is joy in making these things with your own hands; and fishing would be even more of a pleasure using lures you created yourself. Thanks for sharing, Paul.
I just love those negative comments... "But you can buy one for 6c". We fish from our own shed built boat. Your time and effort making the lures and filming the process is appreciated. Inspires me to realise more of my own ideas. +1
i think i no longer see these type of comments as wholly negative, they kind of confirm that not everybody is like me and enjoys doing what i do. I make things because i enjoy it and i seldom get that feeling from anything i have bought, maybe that is unusual or possibly not, but i have my own prejudices, i look at jewellery and think what is that all about. In the uk we have a saying about the shed, that it has saved many a marriage. Hopefully i will get the next film finished in a couple of days, thanks

One of the best instructional videos I've seen for mold making..... your attention to detail and resourcefulness make it easy for me to pilfer your good ideas!!
the mould materials costs about £2, then the plastisol costs about £.06 per lure. But the initial outlay can be pricey as the platisol and colours are normally sold in quantity. I make things for fun not for pirce as i find there is always someone somewhere selling lures cheaper than i could hope to make them. I suppose also i get to make what i want not what the tackle shop stops. Thanks for asking

Did this as a kid of sorts with a Creepy Crawlers toy set that I owned. I actually had some luck with the fly and centipede, but they didn't hold up all that well. After one or two catches the lures would be all but demolished. Still I remember being happy back then because it was something that I made.
Ty so much paul. Its just like you said it's only pitting on the outside. Not very many bubbles inside. I'll try to warm the mold before pouring. And I used chopsticks to mix the plastic. I wondered why you used a butter knife.
if you look in the description there is a link to a pdf that gives some more information and also places to buy like Makelure and Jann's Netcraft. Cheers and good luck
maaate, you know.... there is nothing better in the world then watching your videos on a flat screen, on the couch, after a great day of work where your boss hates you for being alive aaaand sipping on a nice scottish single malt - - PERFECTION .a
i can pull it from the mold after 3mins and it olny needs ten minutes in the water to fully cool. I think to start out it can be pricey but the sheer volume of baits that can be made make it worth while Cheers
These days they are a lure that I often overlook but to be honest I have caught a lot of fish with these and a few different species, so I always have one or two in my box for slow days
Morning Dieter, I have used this with lead, it is not recommended and the molds deteriorate quickly, there is high temperature version which gets up to lead melt temp around 320 deg c but i have never used it. Thinking of jig heads or spinnerbaits?
Thanks , Paul , ......yeah , might come in useful some day . Some years ago the chief writer of a local angling magazine(I know him in person) used some special silicone molding clay used by dental surgeons for getting jaw prints for braces or false teeth . He used a life minnow as the master to cast leaden jigging spoons(pirks) . Tried to make my own , but failed due to wrong material , borrowed his mold and cast a few dozens , no problems about heat , real hot perch killers, these pirks !
This looks like fun and you can probably save some money in the long run. Also its nice being able to make custom colors without having to buy whole packs. How long do the molds last? after that initial mold making process all you need is the plastic and coloring, maybe some glitter if you wanna get fancy. That action looks nice.
Awesome job Paul. Seems a lot simpler than I would have imagined. It must be cool to try some funky designs. Maybe try a lure with a fat duck bill tail to compare.
................your creativity never ceases to amaze me , Paul ! This mold material , ...would it hold up against temperatures of molten lead up to 265 degrees centigrade ? Cheers , Dieter
This was a very interesting video to watch. In the beginning I was ready to criticize this but by the end and then seeing the action in the water I was really impressed. I kind of wish I didn’t see this video because now I want to try this so much but do not have the work space at the moment. Maybe in the future. Great video and great lure.
You sir are my hero in soft plastic. I wish I have seen these videos before buying a ton of soft plastic. I wonder if you can add crush shrimp, garlic or even chicken bits in while waiting for the plastic to cool down.
the ideas come easily it is often scaling them back, or finding simpler methods that takes the time. I think videoing what i am doing really concentrates my focus. Cheers
Great tutorial for mold making etc. I prefer to use my lure making time to craft spin baits or pike flies, gummy worms are here like few euros a pound so I get mine from store. Good tutorial anyhow!
i have a big box of things that don't work or don't work how i would like, if i don't mess things up once or twice a day then something is wrong. I have ten plastic lures which all look the the same but the internal weight is a different position, nine of them swim like concrete blocks the tenth does a wiggle. I find it hard to get that across in the videos, a lot of these lures i am attempting for the first time like beetle lures and most after testing over and over again. thanks
I have seen a lot of folks cloning baits with a similar process. I wonder if this could work with slabtail jigs like a crappie style bait. They have a very fine tail. If I thought I could make those, then I would definitely want to make my own jigs. I'm just not sure about this process with that type of tail. The tail is very fine. They might need a milled mold to make it work.
you can texas rig them, carolina rig them, jig head, use them on spinnerbaits, on buzz baits, cut them down and mount them on spinners and jerkbaits and glide baits and spoons not forgetting the old drop shot rig. Cheers
i was fishing last night and caught a pike, a couple of guys who where passing ask me where i got lures from and i said, I made them myself, then i thought that is cool. cheers
i have given up making promises it seams to conflict with making videos, i will get round to building a surface walker but i cannot say when, it is not something i have ever made so i will have to do a bit of testing first.
+Eugene Shevchenko Knowing things can be bought easier and cheaper does not stop me enjoying making them, it is just the way I am wired. Some of us make fresh pasta, some of us buy it.
hey paul i like your videos and was thinking if you could make a soft plastic shrimp tutorial and probably a squid one too sorry for asking for all of this but its much better when you catch fish with your own lures specially in the florida backwaters
Jarrah O'Brien nah.....had he made the other side all he would've needed was air vents that connected both ends sitting the whole thing upright and filling from what would be the vent to the bottom and letting it fill to the top and if done just right he could have 2 lures with 1 mould
Very interesting, I might have to try this sometime this summer and see what I can do, if I do get the time to do it, I will post a video response to this to show you the finished product, very nice job.

I agree!!
Wantes to say most store boughts

Thanks! Another superb video. To say I'm amazed does not begin to describe it.
The action on that lure is amazing! Great work!
i thought it was great. i also appreciate that it didn't include a bad soundtrack like the majority of youtube videos
