The percussionist is my late father Ambrose Campbell, he and Leon were life long friends and continued to work together until Dad became too frail to continue. I remember Leon as a generous, shy and uniquely gifted individual who had a thirst for life and a very wry sense of humour. He once had his touring Yamaha grand piano re engraved with the 'Harley Davidson Logo" before commencing a tour of Japan. When questioned by an irate rep from Yamaha his response was "if ya'll insist on putting Yamaha badges on motorcycles, I guess it's only fair we put Harley Davidson logos on pianos", delivered with a warm smile no offence was taken. He surrounded himself with loving trustworthy people and built up a little community at his property in Gallatin, Tenn. When he came to the UK he called me and asked my wife and I to accompany him to a TV show (Dad by this time couldn't travel), I found the clip of the show on TH-cam and saw my younger self & my lovely Mrs standing behind Leon while he performed in 1998 on Later with Jools Holland. I had such a look of pride on my face that you'd have thought Leon was 'my' dad, my wife managed to get in almost every shot during the interview which hasn't gone unnoticed by our now adult children. RIP Dad & RIP Leon, I hope you guys have found a decent bar with a stage up there.
Hi Danny ,Thank you for sharing your story and history . Leon having such sweet heart comes through with your stories . And love seeing your Father Ambrose here in this video . My Great Grand fathers middle name was Ambrose .Such a cool name . I ride a Harley too . And have played several of Leon's tunes . They have brought endless joy to all of us in the world . Will look at some other vids of you that you have mentioned . Again thank you so much .Glad to be here with you . We all will enjoy cool history .
Respect to your Grandfather. Leon built a couple of houses on his property, one was my Dad's home for many many years. The atmosphere around the property was welcoming and family centric, he had a golf cart with a gun rack to get around on. I asked one day why they had the gun rack, Skip (the underrated but exceptionally talented handyman living in the other house on the property) said "Danny how big are the bears & mountain lions in London? I didn't know if he was joking so decided to drive into town and pick up some beer instead.@@stilllife4u
Folks have different tastes. I’m 30 and a lot of my friends don’t like this type of music. Some respect Leon a lot when I introduced them to his music but still won’t turn it on themselves but at least I’m spreading the word. I agree it baffles me but I understand folks have different taste. Like I’ll put thumbs down on 80% of rap lol.
He was born in Apache, Oklahoma with perfect pitch. Both his parents and two of his aunts played piano. He started taking lessons at 4. He caught a big break, his folks moved to Tulsa, which has been compared to Memphis. He found great piano teachers. Oklahoma was a dry state so there was no law against juveniles being in clubs. Therefore he started playing clubs with a band at 13. At 15 his band backed Jerry Lee Lewis, who was supremely nice and encouraging and also demonstrated how to drive an audience wild. The rest is history. He moved to LA and became a massively influential musician. There's only one: Leon Russel. Neon Leon.
I met my late husband over a Leon Russell record in 1973. Was a gathering and everyone brought their favorite music. We brought the same album ♥️ We’d both been to the same concert in 1972.
I can watch Leon or listen to him forever. If God forbid that one day I could not see I would know Leon's voice on first note. No one else can sing like that- he was one of a kind. God broke the mold after Leon! Sing on, sing on Leon, forever. ❤ ❤❤
I have loved Leon for over 50 years and I will always love Leon. I am so glad I grew up in Tulsa so I got to see him often. BTW. I’m only 59 but I do not remember not loving him.
He has the greatest smile....especially those beautiful eyes. He is a truly exceptional person with talent written in behind and in front of him. He is in the company of the Most High. R.I.P. Leon.
OH MY DEAR LORD! CAN'T EVER WATCH THIS ENOUGH! WHO WOULD EVER NEED DRUGS OR ALCOHOL? JUST WATCH THIS AND THAT'S ALL YOU WILL NEED! WE LOVE YOU LEON! YOU WILL ALWAYS BE A PART OF MY LIFE! REST IN PEACE.
It's great to hear Leon sing "anything"; but the closeups of his hands playing that piano in his MAGNIFICENT WAY, are really special to me. He was obviously very intimate with the entire keyboard.
Just Think you were amazing from the first time i heard your Music in the early 70 ties, and was so glad When Elton returned you to the glory you really deserved both as a pianist and Singer!
Nat "King" Cole was very accomplished at accompanying himself while he sang. Leon is equally as good at it. Do ya KNOW how hard that is to do, and do this well?? Leon is one with the piano, and his voice is just plain one of a kind!
As a singer-songwriter, I always loved and respected Leon. But lately I've come to understand the signature trill Elton John often does at the end of a vocal line is profoundly influenced by Leon ie. Delta Lady's first line ending with "I found you-u-ou" -- suddenly I'm hearing the root of that and it's deep. Also, Leon is a mezmerizing performer and incredibly beautiful, plus one of the true greats as a player and writer. So this new dimension (his legacy as a singer/songwriter plus his persona and the man) has me in a very deep dive into his catalog. His contribution to George Harrison's "Beware of Darkness" is so soulful. Thank you for posting this song "You Girl" which sort of reminds me of the kind of jazz Bill Withers did with Grover Washington on "Just the Two of Us," if you applied that kind of arrangement. It's implied. This is not a straight blues or rock piece. Oh yeah, I'm listening so intently I am learning a lot about rhythm, intensity/dynamics and arrangement. Leon knew what he was doing. That's part of the facial expressions in this -- an expression of the music and the subject matter. Poetry to watch.
You've been gone for 13yrs now and I still feel the same as I did the first time I ever seen you. I was 6 yrs old and you were performing on the Sonny and Cher show.
Leon was my idol long time ago, and I went on with my life wondering once in a while whatever happened to him. Till Elton John revived him with a beautiful story, God bless Elton. Thank you so much . Rest in Peace my idol.
"... wondering once in a while whatever happened to him." That may be true of many of us. And maybe some of us, me anyway, took Leon, and J.J., too much for granted in the '70s - '80's. In 1976 or '77 I was living & working in Tulsa, where I grew up. Went into a club on edge of south Tulsa, on the Arkansas river, then not a very developed area. Band was across from front door, in the corner behind a baby grand sat Leon Russell. I had heard he was playing there, so went to hear. On one of their breaks I stood out on the front deck having a casual conversation with Carl Radle, while he smoked a cigarette. I was impressed they were playing in that little club - like a converted old house, but at the same time it seemed not surprising for them to be playing around Tulsa. Leon and Co. moved their residence back and forth between Tulsa and CA a few times it seems. For a while he had a house and studio on Grand Lake in northeast Oklahoma, as well as the church building studio in Tulsa. As one who had some of Leon's records, and only listened to rock in my 20's, I know I didn't have nearly the appreciation for the talent, versatility and the music of people such as Leon and JJ - our "hometown boys" - as I do 40-50 years later. It has made an impression on me that Elton John refers to Leon as 'The Master' (piano player) - that caused me to listen much more closely to Leon's music, and I enjoy it more.
Love any Leon Russell song they are all great.Saw him at least ten or more times, even got to do a little short dance with his daughter pub 44 New Smyrna Beach, Florida. That was fantastic. Smyrna
This will always be my favorite song, although “Masquerade” was too close for comfort, but that’s how he does-did his magic by inviting, expressing and the seductive Magic was infinite!!! Forever the Magic of Music- Leon Russell!!!
Loved Leon so much. Still can’t believe he’s gone. The time flew by. God bless you Leon; thx for all the joy of your music for so many yrs. They’re will never be another like you and the music scene no longer allows for much great music anymore.
@@jason698 I totally agree that music is subjective. And I agree that Leon's voice fit the songs wonderfully well. As for whether or not he had a "fantastic voice," we might have to agree to disagree. I always remember a comment Donald Fagen made about "Steely Dan," and who did the singing (he did). He said they all had terrible voices, but he got elected as having the least terrible voice. So he did the singing. If you just listen to voice, as if you tried to imagine it in other genres, just as if you tried to listen to Leon's voice as if he deployed it in other genres, I think you would agree that each of them wasn't in itself very good. It just fit Leon's songs, and "Steely Dan's" songs so well that there's sort of no room for complaint. I have generally felt the same way about Janis Joplin's voice. Spectacular for her material, but not much good for other things.
Thank you for putting up this video again! I found it about a year ago and saved the audio but when I looked again for it on youtube, someone had taken it down. Leon Russell at his rockin' best. (The studio version is tame and boring in comparison.)
