An excellent public spot I started at a long time ago was smedley park. It's a great spot to take kids to go garnet hunting. Most of the garnets are on the smaller size and almandine a deep dark red garnet. However, smaller garnets have the natural octo-shape to them. Some of the sandstones the garnets are in, are so soft you can pry them in half and find the raw untouched garnets. It's a great place to start and a ton of fun if you have kids. If you want gen quality pyro red garnets you are going to have to look/ask around elsewhere.
Hey, those are awesome finds. Good work! I've started making maps of interesting rock/crystal collecting spots around SE PA and I'm trying to hit up all the places. Maybe i should document...
Holy shit! I drove across this country looking for garnets and had no clue there were some like this in delco.. im from springfield you got me hype man!
Why do you think it’s called garnet valley ..I’m in Ridley and 51 .when I was a kid I collected rocks the garnet jewels in the the crown are from swarthmore I believe I remember that from when I was a kid
Love it! Nice to see what they look like on ground as you find them, gives a good idea on what to look for. Have any plans for a beryl video? Would love to see what you look for in a host rock before you break it open. Nice video!
This is awesome. Thank you. I'm in DelCo & have been finding garnets in olivine. Didn't know what I was looking for with solid garnets. I'll be on the hunt after work on my way home. Psyched!!
im about to start collecting em if you want a newer channel to support ❤ been lately ADDICTED to spending my days at the creeks and been trying to pick up more of an audience for nature ❤😊
Thas crazy what beuts ive lived in this area for a decade and never had a clue im from Florida but always loved searchibg for shark teeth fossils river glass shells stuff like that and ive always been fascinated with amethyst but i never new garnets or anything like that would be in this area
Garnets don't usually flourence red. Usually, they are inert. But rubies and spinel flourence red. I'm curious to know what they are. Have you lab tested one?
Did he use a UV light? Because I never seen one kimosabi. He was just using his phone light for spot and a mini LED torch for internal transparency/translucency as well as color. You're definitely right though on garnets not containing florescence, but the reason isn't really the Garnet persé rather the concentration of Fe(iron) which as you may know nearly smothers any florescent activity/properties.
@@tophermohegan9797that was a BEAUTIFUL bit of information!!! i would LOVE to have you dropping facts to me as i learn the creeks of pennsylvania also!! i have been recently hunting quartzite specimen, and gemstones find in the creeks also! soon to be finding my OWN Herkimer diamond mine, i found an iron rich embankment where their SHOULD be antient gemstones and quartz! come on over if you want a fresh channel my friend! i would really appreciate ya ❤😊
8:00 THAT is an amazing Star Garnet, and probably worth over $1,000 dollars when cut properly and looks like it will show asterism (Star) on multiple sides. WOW. You are sitting on a pot of money wherever that is
He said it’s a secret location. But if I were you, I’d look at the geologic map of your area and look in stream-beds down stream from outcrops of metamorphic rocks like schist. A lot of times, the geologists who make the maps will describe the rock units in the legend and include things like “garnet bearing micaceous schist” and so forth. Good luck, hope you find your own source.
if you lived in delco for real. then the answer to your question would be so obvious it hurts. stop being a lazy human and put forth some effort not just ask ppl when it is clear to ppl in the know you don't deserve the answer based off how little effort you put in finding the answer for yourself. maybe you will learn something about delco on your journey, godspeed, dope
I live near Shamokin PA and I've been dying to go crystal hunting, but I don't know where to go, but I'm hoping there's a place nearby. However, I'm not really familiar with what's around me as I moved here about four years ago from the Reading area so this all new territory. Unfortunately I missed out on some great crystal hunting in southeast PA. 😢 Anyway, if anyone knows this area, could someone please direct me to place I could go looking? I'm literally only yards away from the Shamokin Creek. Could there possibly be something to be found in and around it? Thanks in advance!
Some of those are Star Garnet and have Rutile inclusions through them, and faceting them would be a shame and a huge loss of money. You need to make a cabochon with that huge 25+ carat one.
if you find even one, half the size of the video, then you can retire from your shitty job, and live a life of luxury and be the new dan blizzarian. or you could get bitten by a delco tree panda aka racoon
anyone wants to support my channel i am a local pennsylvania rockhound/silver stacker and my channel is going to be a MELTING pot for EVERYTHING nature. i have been finding ANTIENT quartzite/quartz specimens, finding my OWN spots for herkimer diamonds and working on my own claims for all of these gemstones! anyone here is welcome 😊😊
Amazing!! Great finds

Have you ever gone to the Garnet mine in the Adirondacks of NY ? It is reported that many garnets were found to measure several feet across.
