One of my favourite series of all time, it definitely needs to be talked about more often. I would definitely recommend watching the OVA as well, as it shows Zeno’s past and really fleshes out his character more. I don’t know why they made it an ova but it’s worth watching if you enjoyed the series.
I think they made it into an OVA because they probably didn’t plan to make season 2. Zeno’s past and power was introduced during a fight, so they would need a second season to reveal this.

But very popular anime are always worth producing more anime seasons for. Lets put it this way, there's never been a HUGE DEMAND for a season 2 of an anime and the mangaka was like "nah, I just want yall to read the manga." Adapting more of the manga, with a season 2, season 3, and so on, increases manga sales even more.
The king is actually called King IL, it just looks like Il in the subs, but that actually seems like a common mistake. Akatsuki no Yona is my absolute favorite manga. I love Yona and her friends. Kusanagi does a brilliant job at character devolpment. She does it also so subtly that you only realize it once you go back in the series. Zeno is my absolute favorite, I just love the tragic ones, what can I say. The anime is really just an introduction to the series. I would really love more anime adaptation, but only one more season would not be enough to be honest. Yona of the dawn is funny, dramatic, giving goosebumps and feelings left and right and you just don't know how the story will end. The pacing is indeed slow at the start. You have to a least watch 15 episodes before you are hooked, but damn will you get hooked! Thank you for reviewing this great story.
To be fair Zeno appears at the end of the anime.( until the ova's years later)The poor guy didn't get hardly any screentime. I just bought volume 18 of the manga and I'm super excited to learn more about his past. I wish I wasn't so behind on the manga but it's definitely become one of my favorite shoujo manga.
Just correcting one bit Yona never really wanted to take back the Kouka kigdoom,since she knew So won was doing a good and honest work. Ironicly she ended up regaining most of her influence
Zeno is the best, most mature, mysterious and the best dragon out there. You should watch the OVA or read the manga to understand us. 😂😂 Him showing last randomly makes more sense to be honest I was shocked too on that a little plot twist.

It makes me so happy to see more people talking about Yona and shoujo content in general! I’m a huge fan of shoujo and josei and I’m glad anitubers are noticing what I like more.
I would say underappreciated than underrated because I think people are familiar with the series even myself who’s never read parts of the manga .I realize that it’s still ongoing
I love this show. I hope the powers that be decide to take it up again. I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned this to you, but there are 3 OVAs that get more into the back stories of Gija and Zeno.
This show desperately needs a season two compared to almost other shows being animated. It’s a mature, intriguing story full of interesting dynamics and characters. The politics behind Yona and Soo-Won is so interesting knowing they are contributing to the cycle of revenged with Yona wanting to break away from it and wanting to help her people away from the burdens of royalty and Soo-Won being a genuinely good king. The dynamics between the dragons are so sweet and funny with no childish misunderstandings as everyone is emotionally mature. It’s just an overall good story and the manga is great
It is sooooo underrated!!! I really hope somehow it makes a comeback and with that the anime continues. I have read the manga (at least what has been released so far) and it is so amazing!!!

In my opinion you cant go wrong either way. Just know if you watch the anime there may never be more of it to finish the story.

I washappy to see more violent shoujo in anime. It got me into the manga. I find it's themes and characters to be very interesting. I'd love to see the water tribe arc animated someday. Yona's development as a person who understands and cares for her people is inspiring. It drastically needs a season 2.
lmao yeah in the anime it's pretty unsatisfying because the whole story itself isnt complete but zeno could possibly be one of the most tragic characters in the manga. hopefully that part of him is adapted well in the anime (if there is any hope of it appearing)
