  • Avicii has been one of my biggest influences for making electronic music. This video explains why.

    Absolutely agree with all the points you made. Another I point i would include which made Avicii's music stand out, especially in edm, is MEANINGFUL LYRICS!! I know the lyrics for his earlier songs like Seek Bromance weren't written by Tim himself, but some of his later work, especially the Stories and Avicii (01) albums have many deep and powerful lyrics that aren't just typical love songs, which you wouldn't normally hear in pop/edm music. Of course, some lines like "I know one day I will be the one in the sky" from Sunset Jesus have only gained a deeper meaning after his death. Thanks for the video, just subbed!

      For sure!! I really feel like he found his lyrical voice on the “Stories” album. I also really resonate with the lyrics on his earlier works like the Days / The Nights and Wake Me Up but I know that, for example, it was Aloe Blacc who wrote the lyrics for the latter. Rock on! 🤘🏻

      Yes! I agree! Actually I'd say that most of his music gained a deeper meaning after his death... Especially his posthumous album "TIM", which I think is an album about love and mental health.

      Even most songs in those albums featured other artists lyrics. Maybe tim helped to sculpture some of the lyrics a little, but mostly the lyrics was written by other artists he worked with.

    Can I just say, I love watching small channel's videos about Avicii, especially if they're recent. I guess it just reinforces to me that as long as we collectively remember him, he isn't truly gone. Amazing video, I certainly learnt a thing or two.

      So glad you could take something from this!!
      Avicii’s music definitely has longevity! One fun fact regarding that is that “Wake Me Up” is the only song ever to be on the billboard “Decade End” chart without being in the top 3 during any particular week.
      Basically what I take from that is that once you start listening to Avicii, you never stop! Wake Me Up was the highest charting dance track of the decade without really having an amazing peak during any particular week. This really shows his music’s longevity in my opinion!

      @CodyGissel 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@terrifyingmusiclessons another fun Avicii chart fact comes from Australia. Wake Me Up is a mainstay on the ARIA Top 20 Dance Singles Chart. I check that Chart religiously every week and I kid you not, since it's release in 2013, I'd estimate it's been on that chart about 80% of weeks, still appearing regularly even in 2021.

      O dang that’s awesome! It’s no wonder why he still gets like 25 million streams a month!

      Eyyyyy that’s so cool that “Without You” hit that milestone! I love the extended mix of that song. The guitar lead really does it for me. 🎸

    @jb123abc 3 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    I also love how he developed a way to structure songs like in Last Dance had a catchy whistle motif then the catchy synthy piano melodies dancing in the background not too much variation but just enough to where it gets you addicted to want to listen to it over and over

    • @terrifyingmusiclessons
      @terrifyingmusiclessons  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yess he was a master at creating “ear worms”. Those addictive sounds that you want to hear over and over!

      You are the only person I have encountered to describe the whistle as anything other than "annoying" or whatnot. Thank you.

    • @jb123abc
      @jb123abc 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@TwoToRule I know I guess it's subjective but still it's like the whistle isn't cheesy , it's only 4 notes , idk what tim was thinking when he pieced those 4 notes together but man it's awesome it's a statement !!!

    You hit the nail on the head with everything you said. I think like one of the other comments mentioned, not being classically trained or playing an instrument extensively before he started producing just have him such a unique set of melody skills!

    • @terrifyingmusiclessons
      @terrifyingmusiclessons  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yess his style is super recognizable! He approaches melodies in a really unique way!

  • @madame__bizarre
    @madame__bizarre 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    I agree with everything you said in the video. Avicii's melody-driven, often piano-based songs are so great that many try to copy him today... I have an entire playlist full of songs that sound exactly like stuff he would have done.
    I think he is iconic in so many ways. What I like the most about him is his approach to the lyrics (he once said something along the lines of: "A good melody deserves good lyrics"). He also experimented a lot with his sound and often saw potential in singers who aren't very famous. And he was a perfectionist - whatever he was working on, he couldn't rest until it sounded exactly like he heard it in his head. For example, there's a video out there of him creating the song "Without You" with some of his frequent collaborators where he's just so excited that one of them got the melody right :)

      Yea I love that part in “Avicii: True Stories” where he plays “Wake Me Up” for a producer and calls it “this country funky song I guess” 😂

  • @tempo002accln4
    @tempo002accln4 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Totally agree. Although I must say that Avicii has stated that the melodic part is indeed the most important part of a song. He acknowledged it, but I assume he never really elaborated on it further.

    • @terrifyingmusiclessons
      @terrifyingmusiclessons  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yea I remember also reading that he wrote a lot of his melodies on guitar first. I find that interesting since it may explain why his songs sound so good on acoustic instruments! 🎻

    • @jb123abc
      @jb123abc 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      He's also stated in a interview I read online that he wants everything to be a hook , the main melody , the bassline , counterpoint melodies & the drums too . That way every piece of the song can stand alone but sounds badass and epic when they stand together

    U should do search about Melodic House producers such as Dripice, Dustin Miles and Tobu. They're all inspired by Avicii, their music also focuses on lyrics and melodies.

    I was around 8 years old when I first starting listening to his music, grew up with it, it’s all so nostalgic for me. Now I’m a lot older, the amount of DJs I’ve seen live is a long list, but I would give it all up just to see Tim live once. After I heard he died I was so upset to know that I would never get to hear him live. But his legacy and music lives on, and he has inspired me and so many others to be involved in EDM. Thank you Tim, RIP❤️.

    Avicii actually once said he made melody first and then work on the lyrics (not in every song obviously), i saw it in vevo lift video of him or a without you release video i don't remember exactly, but I remember the words . Like Wake me melody was made before lyrics and etc . Thank you so much for making this video . I hope you know about him unreleased gems too 🥺

    • @terrifyingmusiclessons
      @terrifyingmusiclessons  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yea I think with Wake Me Up, Mike Einziger came up with the guitar strumming part and the iconic lead melody and then Aloe Blacc came in with some lyrics he had written while on a plane ride. In “Avicii True Stories” you can see Avicii working with Aloe to perfect the vocal melody! What are your favourite hidden gems? 💎
