    Opening TH-cam and seeing this first nearly took me out! My gf’s 14 year old bichon Texas passed away 2 days ago. We had developed a fierce bond throughout the 6 years I knew him. He was just THE best dog and we miss him so so so much but we’re trying to focus on the good times. I always loved when he got back from the groomers and he’d have little teddy bear ears that flopped as he walked 🥺. She won’t be able to watch this one just yet but i think I will. RIP Texas ❤️

    You're so right about "Beezhons" not being lapdogs, which people always assume about them because of their appearance and diminutive size. The Maltese is a lapdog, the Bichon
    is not! They have way too much energy and love to show off, they are very clownlike and extremely manipulative, but in a very endearing way. I had one for 16 delightful years, still miss her.

    My bichon Hercules passed in September. He was the best boy for 16 years! And I agree, he literally didn't look "rough" or old until he last week of life where he got extremely sick out of nowhere and the vet said he most likely had a brain tumor. I'm super thankful that he never had a very prolonged sickness. We shared the same birthday and i got him when I was 9. This year will be my first birthday without him since then. It was nice to see a bichon here 🥲

    Short annotation from a vet tech here: yes, Bichon Frisé are generally really healthy, but: 1. As with any breed, you can get lucky or unlucky. Still make sure you get your dog from a responsible breeder.
    2. Any small dog breed is very prone to develop heart problems as they age. Make sure you keep an eye out for decreases in stamina, coughing and hightened respiratory rates (below 30 breaths a minute while sleeping is normal). I personally have my vet perform a heart ultrasound once a year on my dog. Its non invasive, doesnt hurt the dog and its a better diagnostic tool than "just" listening to the heart.
    All right, Know-It-All over and out

      @B B just trying to keep people from making uninformed decisions. It would be wrong to believe that just because your dog is a certain breed they won't get sick. You still have to be responsible of where you buy your dog. And with the heart problems its important to know the early signs because the earlier you catch it and treat it the better

    This just popped to my recommendations and I watched it in tears. My best friend, my little Bichon passed away a few months ago at 14 years old. I've never met a better dog. She adored me and my mom and was by our side every minute of the day. Never made a huge deal about herself. She was happy just being with us. I've never really had friends, but that dog was always ready go out on an adventure with me or just listened when I needed someone and I actually felt that she understood. She was very smart, loved people, was never sick, loved to be petted, but didn't like to be held and I also groomed her for her whole life, she didn't like it, but was compliant. I will never forget the unconditional love she gave us and we gave to her. I feel like she took a part of me with her when she left and I will always miss her ❤

    I'll never forget the oversized Bichon Frise I met during my grooming training. His name was Elliot and was, I kid you not, at least 25 lbs. We used to joke that he'd been struck by lightening and that was where his size originated. But, as you described, a very sweet, compliant dog. His owner was a staunch supporter of Canada's Liberal party, and her previous Bichon had been named Pierre. No idea if she ever acquired a Trudeau to finish the name.

    Bischons were some of my favorite dogs when I was a dog trainer. They are very smart and eager to please, love being with people, are usually friendly to strangers and other dogs, and get along well with children and cats (depending on the cat). They should live indoors with their family, they should not be kept outside. They don’t do well if left alone for hours at a time either. They can get enough exercise just from daily walks and playtime in the yard so they are really good for elderly people with grandchildren or disabled people. Two other bischon-type dogs are also similar in temperament and lifespan, the Havanese, and the Coton de Tulear. These two dogs also come in colors besides white so there are color options. Both are from tropical places (Cuba and Madagascar respectively) so they must be protected from cold even if they have a long coat. Over all this group of dogs are great family pets for people of all levels of ability.

    My childhood dog was a Bichon named Daisy. We could only get that type of breed bc my brother didn’t get allergic reactions from her. My family got so lucky the day we decided to look at the spca and found her sticking her nose through the bars. She was found wandering in the sticks so we had no clue of her origins. She was estimated to only have been about 6mo. I was so excited to have my first dog and studied how to groom and train her. She would just lay in my lap as I trimmed her and was so patient with all of the grooming process. She was scary smart too! She was both food and praise motivated so training was easy. She’d learn things in a day. My favorite tricks were play dead, where she’d lay still except for her tail, and yawn, which she’d make cute noises.

    We found an apricot Bichon Poodle mix wandering the street in 2008. She was fully grown, very well trained and extremely shy. I tried for 2 years to find her owner and never could, so we've had her ever since. She is the sweetest dog and thinks she's a cat. She must be at least 17 by now.

    My Bichon passed away at 18 a few years ago to undiagnosed spleen cancer 😢His groomer, who he had for all 18 years, loved him and he loved her ❤ I will always suggest a Bichon and I can't wait to get my next one. They are truly the best. The fur to keep fluffy like that is high maintenance. We took him in every 3 weeks because he hated us brushing him. I know he's playing around in doggy heaven and I always leave a spot under my Christmas tree for him on his favourite blanket that I've always used as a stand cover. It was his favourite sleeping spot. 🌈🐶

    I got my hybrid Cavachon (Cavalier King Charles Spaniel/Bichon Frise) 16 years ago from an originator of the breed cross in Grundy Center, Iowa. He does not shed and I love his hair. He still has a puppy face although he does take more naps. Happily he still has zoomies 3 times a week around dinner time and he has always gotten on wonderfully with my cats and other dogs. He is very relaxed at the dog park and nothing much bothers him. I am so grateful for my white and caramel-colored boy.

    When I worked as a vet tech, most of the Bichons we saw had allergies and skin issues. Lick granulomas (open sores where doges lick because they are itchy, like if a person were to scratch themselves raw) were very common. I would certainly say if someone were to decide on a Bichon, watch for allergies and and skin issues. And also, since they have ears that lay down, it is VERY important to clean those ears at least once a week or they have a tendency to get ear infections.

    • @robynhab
      @robynhab 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Yes skin issues everywhere. If you have a white dog with some pink/red staining on its fur, it's probably dermatitis or allergies. Not to mention diabetes! It's the trade-off I suppose for such a long-lived pet

      Still, as far as dog breeds go, that seems very healthy to me? Usually when I hear about dog breeds they seem to be prone to things like joint pain, heart problems, breathing problems etc. Allergies and eczema are "normal" problems that plenty of humans also have and it seems much more manageable than "chronic struggle to breath" etc. Even the lifespan is almost as good as an average cat.

    • @DragynGirl
      @DragynGirl 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@helenanilsson5666 Well, yes, however, every breed has its plus and minuses, including mixes, "mutts" and "designer breeds". It really all comes down to what someone is personally willing to deal with. As long as one does their research before adopting and is willing to take on the responsibility that comes with being a pet parent. I have a deep love for collies (rough coat), and am fully aware of all their issues, however, whenever I adopt a family member I always research the breeder, the genetic lines of the mother and father of the litter, etc. to hopefully give incentive to better breeding practices and healthier puppies/dogs.

    Personally owning and breeding bichons, they’re my favourite breed. I breed them to work as service dogs, and those who aren’t suited for the service life becomes devoted house pets. My own ‘main’ dog, who’s now 13, is my personal service dog for my autism. They’re great. Semi easy for first time owners (although they require a lot of fur care)

    • @madeliner1682

      I think I'd get worried that such a small service dog might accidentally get stepped on or something out in public, but from what I've seen it seems like their general breed temperament would be perfect for doing that kind of job
      I'm considering getting an emotional support animal for my own autism (yes I understand the differences between a service animal and an emotional support animal) but the problem is that the best pet for me would be a snake and bringing snakes in public is dangerous for their safety because people suck

      Mostly we train them for that or other mental disabilities like depression, anxiety or panic disorder

    The salon my grooming school was in catered to Bichon Frise, and learned scissoring skills on them. I fell in love with the breed. When school was over, I had two part time jobs, one was in a store that sold puppies. There was a 7 month old Bichon puppy that no one wanted, so I took him, working to pay the fee. At 13 months of age I entered him in a local dog show, and he won best of breed!!! I then had one full time job, in a very wealthy part of town (Las Vegas) and had quite a few customers with Bichons, so I used him for stud, while still showing him. Over the next few years he sired five litters, with four different mamas, and had a total of 27 puppies. I kept one of his puppies. They both lived until they were 16. They were two of the best dogs I ever had, and I will definitely.look into rescuing one when I look for my next dog. You did a great job grooming Gracie, but I would have loved to see her big round head, it’s just my preference. I love when a customer tells me “do whatever haircut you want”. It gives us the opportunity to highlight our skills.

    I currently have a German Shepherd, a Maltese, 3 Havanese, and my Darby, my 14.5 year old Bichon. While they are all wonderful, all rescues, my Darby is the absolute sweetest, most affectionate dog I have. I have always had dogs, have fostered and rescued many, and I have always maintained that as wonderful as they all are you still have to be aware, if not cautious, because they are animals. That goes right out the door with Darby. I tell everyone, I absolutely guarantee that dog will never bite. When she was a puppy my granddaughter, who was then a baby grabbed her and bit her, coming up with a mouth full of white fur. Darby, clearly in pain, yelped and scooted off the bed. I thought then if that Darby was clearly a super girl. Plus through all the years I have fostered, and had sometimes up to 20 dogs in my house ( for short periods), she has always been gentle but firm with them. Now Maddie, my mad Maltese, totally different story…..

    I will never not love your videos. You are so "matter-of-fact/news-room" professional in your timbre, but you never sound like a reporter who has no craps to give. You're always providing awesome info to help us better understand our faithful pet-bonding species. You're awesome for that.

    I had a rescue bichon for 14 years named Lily, she just recently passed in January 2023. She had a lot of anxiety, so after the first 7 years of her going to the groomers it just got to be too much for her, and I started doing it at home. She was so good about it, up until the end when she was just tired of it and so it would take me a period of three days to groom her, one day for brushing, one and sometimes two days for sheering her body/face/paws and then a bath and nails. When we first brought her home she did have those brown tears but I remember looking it up and reading someone's comment on how they never gave their bichon sink water only filtered so that's what I did and she never had those brown stains again, also you have to pull the eye buggers of pretty often. I've been enjoying watching your videos these past few days, you're a wonderful human being.
