I had one for 17 years. They have "unique" temperaments to say the least! They are lovable, hugely entertaining, but they can also be stubborn divas and amazingly manipulative! And while some may be "lap dogs", I don't think it's fair to assume that a Bichon will automatically become a lap dog, if that is what you are looking for in a pet. They are incredibly 'strong willed", and will usually get you to do their "bidding" by staring at you with those big, black eyes! They really are a "trip", but probably not exactly what you were expecting based strictly upon their "looks". If you are looking for a true "lap dog", get a Maltese. If you want to be entertained by a doggie "comedian", get a Bichon!
I love mine to death and she is absolutely potty trained. HOWEVER like a mischievous little fae creature she will poop in conspicuous locations as a form of temper tantrum.
