    Over 50yo male. I’ve been on keto for almost a year, OMAD, with monthly 90hr fast. It took almost 4 months before all sugar, junk food cravings absolutely stopped. The 1st thing I noticed was decrease in joint pain, which occurred after about a week into keto. My mind is so clear. I can read for a long time without my mind going off on its own.
    My workouts at the gym has increased in intensity.
    BP is always slightly below normal 110/70.
    No mental issues, but I have noticed being more calmer and increased ability to deal with extreme stress

    A case of fructose intolerance in a tiny child:
    I was recently called upon to think what might be 'wrong' with a little girl, not yet 4 years old, and her 2 year old sister. The bigger girly was experiencing bowel problems, diarrhoea, bleeding, tummy ache, and also behavioural oddities, like rocking herself. The younger toddler was having similar symptoms and signs, but to a lesser extent. I asked about food, of course, and the diet was already grain, dairy and nut free as the whole family has major food reactivity, but what struck me was when the keenness on blueberries. The bigger girl couldn't get enough of them! I suspected fructose intolerance, and asked them to stop all fruit for a week and report back, and provided them a vitamin C supplement. All her symptoms resolved, immediately. Behaviour as well as gut disruptions, normal again. I have written to their GP and they are going to be investigated for the various fructose issues that can be present. It's hard on this family as they already have a very narrow diet, but, with plenty of meat, fish, eggs and vegetables I think they will do fine. In time they'll experiment with small amounts of fruit, depending on what the investigations reveal.

    Great information! Thank you for sharing. I have been on Keto and doing Intermittent Fasting for 9 months now, and have never felt better - emotionally and physically. I lost 50 pounds, and normalized my blood glucose readings. The inflammation in my body is gone; even my hands and feet are smaller. My sleep apnea vanished, and my GERD is gone, too. My skin looks and feels amazing! I look at least 5 years younger, as I was mistaken recently for my younger sister. Eat the foods our ancestors ate, those are the ones your body knows how to digest, and you can flourish again. Keto for life!

    The carnivore diet has eliminated my chronic daily headaches and migraines after nothing else worked, even being on two different migraine medications. I’m so elated to be pain free, I can’t tell you! I had been feeling depressed, stressed, anxious and despair all from being in chronic daily pain. I had thoughts of offing myself it was so bad. Now I’m happy again, back to working out by riding my bike and I can laugh and have fun with my friends and family. Thank god I kept searching and stumbled upon the carnivore way of life! I hope more people find it too!

    Dr. Eades, It’s CRITICAL to get this out to our young. Whilst my daughter 19, is very open to ‘hearing me’ she just cannot wrap her head around the mind/food connection.
    So much of this information is geared towards those whom are already open to hearing this information often a mature audience. -I’m 53.
    May I ask, no BEG, for this information to be put into an ANIMATION format that our young people (teens/20’s) will be receptive to hearing. For instance there is a great TH-cam animator named Swooze who would be perfect because he has ‘street creed’ with the kids. Anyone would work, just putting the information out there is one thing but getting young people to listen to it is another.
    Thank you so much!

    In minute 18:12 Dr. Ede starts to speak about the subject of food addiction. I am very appreciative that she emphasizes the reality of this situation and how food addiction can be just as difficult an addiction to overcome as other widely acknowledged addictions, like drug or alcohol addiction. So many people still deny that food addiction is an addiction, and instead think that ones compulsive eating of food is simply a lack of willpower or a defect in ones character. They are dismissive, or are completely ignorant of how food can have a pronounced effect on the biochemistry of the brain. This is why you will see relatives and friends try to push someone who is attempting to change or has changed their diet to just "try a little bit of cake", and this is socially acceptable. They fail to realize that this "little bit of cake", while they can handle it, will lead to out of control binging in some people. Then these family members and friends will berate the person they tempted when they see them gain or regain weight. Conversely, these same relatives and friends would never compel their friend or relative who is a known alcoholic to have a little sip of scotch. I am glad to see more highly esteemed psychiatrists, like Dr. Georgia Ede and Dr. Chris Palmer lend more credence to food addiction being treated as a real addiction.

      @Li Lu you may rarely hear about them, but people who will addictively eat ANY kind of food do exist. Any substance or behavior that induces dopamine response can be addictive.

    • @zalamael
      @zalamael 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I don't think it is so much that people deny food addiction exists, it is more that the mainstream media refuses to shine a spotlight on it (as the MSM protects the food and pharma industries who pay the bulk of their advertising revenue). If you are familiar with the patterns of addiction, you can clearly see the same patterns in people who are obese and have poor health. But most people either don't see it or figure it isn't real because the MSM would have said something etc.
      And Patricia is right, it is all about stimulating that dopamine response. You can see the same patterns in people who drink a lot of caffeine, or people addicted to attention seeking on social media etc. We are a society of addicts. People who are addicted to those dopamine highs are very likely deficient in serotonin (usually the result of poor nutrition), so they replace the long term feelings of satisfaction they would normally get from serotonin with short term feelings of satisfaction from dopamine. So it makes sense that a dietary change to improve nutrition (such as more red meat for additional minerals such as iron etc) would improve serotonin levels and reduce the dependence on dopamine.

    • @amytrumbull156
      @amytrumbull156 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Agreed. In fact, food addiction can be the most difficult because one cannot simply abstain from eating and we have to eat to stay alive whereas an alcoholic or drug addict can stop drinking or using altogether. I’m a recovered alcoholic, drug addict and food addict and the food part is very hard.

    I suffered from general anxiety disorder for my whole life. It looks like I inherited it and passed it to my children. 12 years ago, I crashed and Klonopin saved me. I was up to 2 mg a day until a year and a half ago when I stopped the carbs. I have been off of Klonopin now for a while and I just fired my drug dealer, my psychiatrist which became necessary as GPs quit prescribing.

    When i first started Keto, i had what I call a Super-Manic episode. I heard stories about increased mood and clearer thoughts, but i literally felt 'high' all day, every day...for a few months lol
    I went from a lazy sloth, sitting around all day, over weight, watching tv and eating donuts and ice cream every day to waking up early, doing 45 minutes HIIT workout, then 30 minutes ballet stretches or yoga, then i would go out kayaking for 2 hours every day lol.
    I crashed after about 5 months, lost ~50 pounds and all metabolic measurements are great now, yay.
    The depression after the crash was less deep, and was short-lived compared to previous depressive episodes i've had in the past.
    Sounds bad, but i really wish i could have more Super-Manic episodes :)

    Thanks for sharing on this crucial topic! To add to this, Vitamin B12 deficiency can cause depression. Also, a person may eat lots of animal products (which contain B12), and still may not be adequately absorbing B12. Reasons for this malabsorption can include: history of having part of the intestine removed, having Crohn’s disease and associated intestinal inflammation, bacterial or yeast overgrowth, low stomach acid, taking meds that suppress stomach acid, and genetic predisposition!

As a community mental health worker I do not have the expertise to recommend strict keto diets but do encourage people with mental health issues and other people I know to cut out the "carbage" or at least reduce it somewhat. However living an Australian Country town access to medical services revolved around standard psychiatry reviews which means a nutritional referral is often not considered as part of the review. Please keep up the good education and possibly look at how front line workers (eg. Via Low Carb Down Under) could be trained.

    the limit of talking about keto is that keto could be chicken breast and margarine as well as liver and grass fed butter (just to give two extreme examples). quality matters above all.

    • @debraengland3827
      @debraengland3827 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Actually, margarine would not be acceptable on any ketogenic diet as it is made of seed/vegetable oils. But certainly people who do not have large food budgets can still see enormous benefits from following a ketogenic (or carnivore) diet that fits within their budget. Dr. Ken Berry is a General Practitioner in a small town in Tennessee and he has many videos in which he discusses the benefits of ketogenic diets even if one can't afford to live on grass fed grass finished filet mignon.

    Ketosis is not nearly as important as getting linoleic acid out of your diet (omega six seed oils). Which basically steers you down the path of 1) no processed food (almost all have poly-unsaturated fats), eating more saturated fat (try adding stearic acid to your diet and watch the weight drip off of you), and eating much more cholesterol, which is a precursor for our hormones and is in every cell of our bodies (it also is used to make gall that breaks down dietary fat to be used as energy).

Learning skills (ie emotional regulation) using DBT skills is better for long term health than meds. I feel "me" again! 💕🧘‍♀️ i just say "NO" to processed food, restaurant food and takeaway junk. They are not good enough to go in my body. "NO"✋👊
    I have plenty of "YES" foods to choose from🙌

    I found out I was sensitive to gluten and dairy by going on the ultimate elimination diet, carnivore [if going on carnivore doesn’t eliminate your symptoms after 4 weeks, try beef-only carnivore (the cow has a 4-chambered stomach, so processes it’s food better than other animals)]. Add 1 food back at a time. If you go on a carnivore diet you must supplement with potassium, magnesium and salt. I also take vitamin D and drink a cup of bone broth daily (made without any vegetables if you’re sensitive to them). I also found I couldn’t tolerate many vegetables due to plant oxalates and lectins. All my symptoms went away. Also many prescription meds and supplements have a starch or rice filler; if you’re gluten sensitive this can precipitate all your symptoms.

Keto, intermittent fasting, no gluten, no sugar, no chemicals in cosmetics, gut health, no bad oils, and meditation may seem to much for alot of people but if you work on this one step at a time. • @zenmind4711
      @zenmind4711 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That's usually only an issue for vegans or high oxalate diets.
      Keto flu describes the low energy state that occurs after removing carbs and before the body has time to optimize it's ability to oxidize fat .
      High carb will push enzymes required for fat metabolism down and they take time to increase. High fat of course does the exact opposite, handicapping ones ability to metabolize carbs requiring a some what similar transitioning.

      This is true for me. I was a raw food vegan for 10 years or so and continued with the smoothies etc well after resuming meat. But fasting or going keto or carnivore means you stop consuming oxalates and the body will then start to try to unload this stored up toxin. For me this feels like keto flu or whole body aches like a flu. It can also include some lower back pain and random shooting pains. Other people may have other symptoms like joint pain and old injury flare ups and specific tissue pains. Fyi, I have been on a very low oxalate diet for most of this year now. I experience oxalate dumping keto-flu like symptoms for a few days monthly right before my menstrual cycle. It is worth it to me to know I am getting rid of these toxins. Taking mineral supplements and extra lime water helps. Good luck folks!

    What is the mainline separating a paleo diet with keto?

    • @dana102083
      @dana102083 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      All eliminate soy, corn amd wheat. Many paleo ppl are lower carb but can still eat starch veggies below the ground and fruits but no dairy. They may get into ketosis but it osnt primary goal amd not everyone does (coconut sugar is paleo but is high glycemic). Keto you can have dairy if you want, many choose to eliminate due to inflammation. Keto is a state of ketosis, meaning your blood sugars (and insulin) are low enough to use fats for fuel, so must restrict carbs enough to get to ketosis (usually less than 50g carbs for active people, 20g for sick or inactive people). The only fruits you can have on keto are berries, coconut, avocado, tomatoes, etc. Some choose to eat processed foods and stay below 20g carbs but generally they both existed to be nature whole food lifestyles but people will eat dirty keto and eat anything as long as it fits in their carb. I dont recommend that for anyone everyday but ok as a tool to better things, say passing thr keto flu or high stress times. Getting into ketosis is more beneficial due to the specific effect of ketones on hunger and on the brain which is important to correct eating habits for eating problems but also to access another form of energy when sugar isnt working well (insulin resistance). I have a "keto for chronic disease management" fb group for more resources if you like. Paleo is a great stepping stone to keto :)

      I'm going to spell it out to you just to be pedantic.
      The context of that statement is that there are certain things you can eliminate from your diet -alcohol, sugar, seed oils. But you can't eliminate all foods from your diet. You have to eat something. Just like you have to breathe. You can't decide to stop breathing to prevent oxidation of the body.
      That was the point.
      BTW, it's why some people think that food taxes are unethical. Everyone has to eat. (just like everyone has to breathe) And, poor people typically end up paying more tax compared to their income and food intake.

      Liability. It certainly is helpful to regulate hormones to benefit but "dieting" is stressful on the body and not advised while fetus is growing. Most will say its best to become fat adapted for 3-6 months first so its less stressful during such an important time. From babys perspective, its best to have lower insulin and low blood sugar for its development and future risk for obesity and diabeted. I know many people myself that became pregnant amd stayed pregnant from ketosis and never stopped, not even for breastfeeding. She was always thin but had the acne amd messed up hormones.

      I know this is long after the discussion but note people that Kelly Hogan does not eat keto. She eats a carnivore diet, only meat and a LOT of it and eats whenever she’s hungry until she is satisfied. I think most women that have problems on carnivore are making one or more of the following ‘mistakes’...1) Not eating enough. 2) Not eating enough fat. 3) fasting too much. 4) Working out too much. These same mistakes could also apply to men but the latter two are less of a problem for men it seems. Also, some women seem to ‘need’ some carbs at strategic points in their cycle, which, in my opinion may be evidence (since some are fine with zero carbs like Kelly Hogan) that they have not completely adapted perhaps. I think some people never really properly adapt (esp to keto), most often because they give up, but perhaps their fat metabolism is just too broken? It is known that full keto adaptation can take a very long time. In terms of pregnancy I don’t know, but suspect, that FULL and thorough keto adaptation would likely need to occur BEFORE pregnancy. I would think that while pregnant, that would be a dangerous time to go through adaptation to keto with a baby on board. Full adaptation may not even occur before the baby is born! Just seems fraught with potential problems. Which explains why there is literature advising against it - probably from women trying keto while pregnant or getting pregnant while still not fully adapted to it.

    Some get neuro- mood problems with a far better diet - like me.. i started LCHF with TRE two years ago for weight-management (in fact no problem only my fancy) to discover that the great impact was neurological: I have become calmer with more patience less moods and less burstes of anger. I stick to the diet (bio whole foods: only vegetables proteins and nuts + very dark choco my addiction) because of this astonishing impact (had PTSD BPD no medicines. Behavioral T). I suppose that prior to that change I got with the "carby whole foods" some phytochemicals or proteins that under cover caused a kind of auto immune reaction, attacking some neurons colonies in my brain. We all need to boycott factory farms and unethical animal foods. Plants scream when threatened or damaged (per EKG readings). And carnivore foods can and should be produced with animal wellbeing and environmental health at the forefront of our thinking. Next step, we need to ascend out of polarity to a higher dimension where the lion can lie with the lamb, the dolphin with the fish and we can stop consuming things all together. Until then, most of humanity are obligate carnivores (to some degree) for proper health. We need to be compassionate to both ourselves and the rest of the planet.

    Let's learn from the quokkas, the happiest animals on earth. Upfront, they are herbivores. An excellent way to battle insulin resistance is to switch to a healthy plant-based diet (see PMID: 29948369). It frequently ends the need for low carb diet. By reducing insulin resistance, cells will absorb the carbs from blood serum, resulting in more energy. PCRM has free delicious recipes. Also, eating meat and dairy does result in subconscious guilt, as consumers well-know the extreme suffering the animals are subjected to. Therefore, I strongly discourage a carnivore diet. The Ketogenic Vegan Diet is worth considering in this case.

      Considering our ancestors ate very much a keto equivalent for hundreds of thousands of years, it's completely illogical to call it a fad. The fad is the Standard American Diet that has only been in existence for 50-60 years. Less than a drop in the ocean on the historic timeline.

    • @HammyGirl999
      @HammyGirl999 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      A state of ketosis is a natural part of metabolic flexibility that humans evolved to utilize. Fat metabolism, when one is fat/keto adapted is a more fuel efficient, higher energy-producing, mitochondrial performance-enhancing state compared with carbohydrate metabolism. Historically carbohydrate is the least environmentally-available macronutrient. Grains are a new fad relative to our evolution. Fruit used to be much lower in carbohydrate and higher in fiber and also very limited in quantity and duration (seasonality). So being adapted to go in and out of ketosis is a normal and healthy human capacity. What is a fad is having grains and unhealthy processed and carbohydrate-rich foods available 24-7-365. The movement for people to restore historic fat/keto adaptation into their metabolic capacities (while retaining carbohydrate adaptation as well) is well supported in the scientific literature. Since this is not taught in medical schools, and doctors get an hour of nutrition that programs them with limited and outdated misconceptions about nutrition and weight loss, you are right to notice that it is the rarer MD who is critically thinking and takes the time to research and explore outside of the sick-care medical model.

Look, I was born in the fifties, a time when high carbohydrate processed foods came to become king of the mountain. I ate all the shit real or not. I had the mentality that they wanted me to have, that mentality being carbohydrate intake was good. Unfortunately I married a female... well, that ate aplenty once married... (sigh)... I found out that she definitely liked carbohydrates. Now totally away from the entrapment of a relationship of a female I am free to not be insane. Yes, LCHF is great, but for a man, not associating with a female (that including mothers and sisters), is very much part of the equation.
