    Not many people think about it, but to video each step in the field and in the dark room is a real challenge and is not to be underestimated. I applaud your effort both with your photography and especially the effort to document it. Music choice is perfect for your work.
    Keep up the excellent work!!

    Borut, your videos are always informative and humerous, you make One Cool Photography class teacher. I have been developing film since 1967 Junior High School Photography class, but have never tried Wet Plate, but plant too, given that I own two Kodak 3A cameras that are designed for glass plate, Cut Film and film rolls, Photography.

    Great videos Borut!! I'm now (a very, very young!!) 68, and have done photography (starting with a jumble sale box camera), on and off, all my life. Bought a 4mp Canon Powershot G2 in 2002, and never upgraded - nice little camera actually!! Now I've 'rebuilt' my darkroom, and loving the whole process again!! End game is to do alternative / historical processes, which I tried out during my 3 year photo course at Derby University in the early 1980's. As you rightly say, Ink Jet is just Ink Jet, whereas a 'real' photograph is a real and wonderful object, that can have real aesthetic and monetary value. Your videos are a great inspiration - please keep up the good work!! Thank you!!

    This is absolutely insane, amazing work, and amazing work to video all of it so well. I have never seen anything like that glass plate carbon print. Thanks!

    I like the depth of the Ambrotype. The Carbon print has great microcontrast and dynamic range, and rendering of the fine vine details on the branches is excellent. Thanks for taking the time to video your process.

    Hi, thank you so much for this video. Your pictures are stunning!! Can I ask you what is the solution you use to reveal your ambrotype, is it an iron sulfate solution? What concentration do you use? Thanks again!

    • @BorutPeterlinPhotography
      @BorutPeterlinPhotography  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, ferrosulfate 5gr, 8ml acidic acid, 5ml alcohol into 100ml of destiled water.

    I do a lot of inkjet printing, but I'd like to get started in ambrotype photography. Could you recommend a course or list just what I'll need to get started? (I don't even have a large-format camera yet.) Thanks.

      Mark Osterman 's workshops at George Eastman house, his manual at collodion.Org or send me a pm if you're from EU

    The Ambrotype had dramatically less detail in the shadow side of the tree. Is that just a difference in the exposure the Ambrotype was given or do Ambrotypes always lack shadow detail?

    • @BorutPeterlinPhotography
      @BorutPeterlinPhotography  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      williaty excellent remark! Yes, ambrotypes always have less details in shadows and a fraction of dynamic range in comparison to negatives. My estimate is that ambrotype has 2EV dynamic range in comparison to the negative that has about 7.
      Although collodion photography is not sensitive to yellow, red and low sensitiveness to green spectrum of light, which is very important in understanding dynamic tonality range and quality of light.
      The difference of dynamic range between ambrotype and negative comes from the way we view them. Ambrotype is viewed as a print, so we see the light that is reflected from the surface of glass plate. Negative is viewed against the light and we see the light transmitting through all the layers of silver. Ambrotype must have very limited amount of silver on the plate, otherwise it's just grayish smudge of silver, because viewed as reflective image.
      I hope that makes sense. It's very easy to understand if you see the both mediums in person. The difference in dynamic range is greater than comparing polaroid and a negative!

    Does the black spray paint work as well as ashphaltan material? The varnish protects the emulsion from the paint? Archival? Truly amazing and beautiful work Borut. Very inspiring.

    • @BorutPeterlinPhotography
      @BorutPeterlinPhotography  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      asphaltic paint is better. Either way the paint is on the back of the plate, on the opposite side of the collodion, so if the acrylic paint cracks, it just needs to be backed with black again.
      thx!

    • @gerryyaum
      @gerryyaum 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      ok...I thought you painted the collodion side, my mistake..so with painting you cannot reverse the image/glass back to the right orientation....Thanks for your help Borut.

    Borut ever worry that by the time you set up your camera 2 km off the hightway and set up your shot your landrover, the tent and everything else will have been stolen? Or get your camera stolen when your in the tent? Slovenia must be safter than Canada. Seems you hiked very far away to get the picture. How long do you hav 10-15 minutes with wet plate?

    • @BorutPeterlinPhotography
      @BorutPeterlinPhotography  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Slovenia is one of the safest countries. I don't even lock my house. Or I lock it and I'm leaving keys in the lock so whoever comes by, knows that I'm not at home and will come back later. It's true, ha, ha...
      Once I forgot my camera in the centre of my town. I forgot it because I was entertaining a group of people and just forgot that I wasn't shooting in the studio, but behind the house. Anyway two hours later I've received a phone call of a neighbour that my camera is still outside and it's getting late, so he guessed correctly that I have forgotten it.
      In bigger cities I don't shoot that often, but yes, I am concerned about it, but until now, nothing happened (knock on wood)

    • @gerryyaum
      @gerryyaum 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow, don't lock your house, that sounds so nice. Got to visit someday for a workshop and just to see the country and meet the people. The camera story is great. No wonder you love your country so much....and YOUR FORREST. Thanks again.

    Why not invest in a pair of fly fisherman’s waders, so you only need to wet the plates instead of the plates and your feet.
