Massively helpful, and timely, thanks !! I received a new clutch & drum for a Ryobi (MTD) 790r trimmer rebuild and the captive screw refused to thread into the crankshaft. I was just about to spend $50 on a new-old-stock replacement from ebay when I found your video. Your presentation is spot on: no more, no less than the exact amount of detail required. As is the case most often, the best advice comes from Down Under. You are now top of the list of my small engine repair video subscriptions.
How do I get the bolt out? I have seen a few youtube videos, for similar models. I am having an issue getting the screw loose in the clutch bell because the connection keeps spinning. I tried using a torx wrench and jamming a tool in the spinning section under it however ive stripped the tool. the videos i saw didnt have to work to get the screw off. Im trying to get to the coil which retracts the starter pull string but the bell siphon is in the way.
Good vid there mate, glad it helped, now you need to explain to your viewers what happened to that circlip when you first removed it, :), and why when fitting it, you had your finger over it. On some circlips, I put the piece that has the circlips inside a plastic bag if possible, and if it flies off, the bag contains it.
Thanks mate and thanks for your help, this would be in the bin if it wasn’t for you! Yes! Such a good point. For anyone reading this, the thing went flying the first time even with my thumb covering it. Spent 10 minutes searching. Great tip with a clear bag mate! I’ll use that in future :)
How on earth did you manage to get the screw out of the crank shaft. I just broke one off in mine and would really appreciate some advice on how to get it out.
They should only be snug and maybe a touch more, if they’re hard to remove it’s possibly rust. Be careful, heat it up and use penetrating oil. Then drill a hole through the bolt and use an easy out :)
Amazing video. Great advice! I love your novel way of looking at these problems. My issue is I accidentally rounded the torx screw head and can't figure out a way to get it the heck out of the drum so that I can use your method to rebuild the drum. The shaft on my Ryobi 875r 4 stroke is way too narrow to get a screw extractor down there. I'm guessing the only option is a long skinny left hand drill bit, but I wont be able to see what i'm doing down in the shaft and I don't want to damage the crankshaft threads. I figure if anyone can figure this out it would be you. Might make a good companion video to the rebuild one. Cheers
Hey :) thanks! You can try put some CA glue on the end of the Torx bit, let it set up and carefully see if you can free it? It’s unlikely, but it’s about the best I can come up with!
i have a stihl fs 38 weed eater that I change the clutch, I feel that the bushing in the clutch bell is lose cause the bell to wobble. It does not fit like one in the video. Do you know if this part can be bought separate without buying the hold clutch assembly? I
Tom you were very unlucky to break the screw, the hundreds of these I've removed over the years I can't say I have had this happen. It probably will now I've said that. lol..

Hey! This was a long time ago, honestly I can’t remember much from the video now I’m afraid :/

Thats why we sometimes call them Jesus Clips! When they fly off into the abyss, we yell Jesus!!
@@KensSmallEngineRepair Circlips are proof of a 4th dimension existing.
Great idea ! On such jobs I've spent more time surveying the shop floor with a magnet than on the job itself. Many thanks from Atlanta.
Good job mate. We have all broken that screw, this will save buying a new clutch housing.
Thanks Bill! Spot on :) the last time I rounded the Torx bit thankfully not snapped it, but I wish I knew this then before it ended up in the bin!
Great vid. Does anyone know the length of thread you need on the screw?
I’m afraid I don’t :/
I managed to get the old one out in one piece although the head is ruined. The thread is about 8mm in length.
Never knew that Tom, great Tip!!
Thanks Kenny and thanks for encouraging me
to make a video!

Great repair video Tom well done 👍
Thanks buddy!!
Nice tip Tom, how long did it take you to find the circlip the first time you tried popping it out?? 😲
10 - 15 minutes on my hands and knees wjth a magnet 🤣😂
Well at least you found it, I have some still hiding to this day.
Same 🤣 we’ll I’ll find them one day mate! 😂🙄
Excellent video, I just recommend using an Internal tooth lock Washer to prevent the screw from loosening.
Thanks for watching and yes, you can do! I just use a drop of Loctite :)

Hello Tom 👍
Hello Mr Luke!
Good stuff Tom - you don't learn that in school 👍👍
Thanks Claus buddy :)
Good Job 😄💯
Thanks :)
Nice job. Just tried to find the screw for it and I can't find one with the correct thread. Do you know what thread is it?
Thanks! I believe it’s an m4 👍🏻
Tried m4, thread pitch was different. But it's 4mm in diameter
@@vov9261 I swapped mine out with a standard metric m4 x 0.7 👍🏻
I'll look into it again, I have spare drum coming soon. Thank you
The company that make that trimmer should hire u to make things better........ good job...a 10-10...😉
