As a non-native English speaker, I heard this song first when I was at 18. And my thought was ‘hmm, A song of life and death. Too Mundane’, I understood Nothing. And now I’m at age 30. I tried to find a job at 27, While my Ex-GF and my ex-best friend both betrayed and leave me. I tried to begin again and every struggling of mine failed. All I was thinking is ‘My life sucks from the start and never be paid off’. and I’ve always thinking about putting an end of myself by 2 years. All of a sudden I reminded this song and played again. And I finally relized what this song’s true meaning ‘why don’t you love your life while you still can?’. I decided to get a grip and got a counseling. Now I found a new job abroad, Started a new hobbies, and my collegues are relying on me. Everything changed and I’m a little bit more happier man now. Thanks Modest Mouse. And thank you for reading this boring story of mine. May you can find peace of mind by this song like myself.

@@collinwatson3319 it happened really fast, the band announced he had stage 4 cancer and was receiving treatment and then like 2 or 3 days after the band’s announcement he passed away in his sleep. So unbelievably sad. I think they knew he wasn’t doing too good so they made the announcement and once they did, he passed🙁
This song and band beckons a lonely grieving soul but in the comment section you find out your not the only one. Hope anyone reading this has a wonderful life
Me too,Me too.I'm a grieving soul,I lost My mom 12 years and 5 months ago,and I was very close to her.I miss her,and I loved her with all My heart.John Guinto
The scene where the boy wakes up to see Isaac, alive and healthy, reminds me of the last time I saw my dad. He was in the hospital, dying from a terminal illness. We drove out of state to see him. In the hospital, He told me that one day, I’ll see him again. I was too young to know what was going on, so I didn’t think much of it. That night, I had a dream that played out just like this. My dad was standing there, healthy as can be. He held out his arms and smiled at me. We ran, we jumped, we did everything we could possibly do. I was the happiest boy in the world. Everything was perfect. I woke up the next day and realized it was all a dream. I found out that my dad passed away in his sleep not long after I left. I still think about that dream. I love you dad. One day, I will see you again.

I was introduced to modest mouse when my dad bought me a big screen t v for my birthday shortly after being let go from rehab, man,...... ocean breaths salty was a banger!!!
Coming from an abusive home I never understood the connection between a child and their father so when I had my kid I was constantly spending my time with him thinking that I don't matter to him and that he'd be better off without me. One night my depression got really bad and I was going to end everything when I came across this music video and I saw the smile he gave the crow when he dreamed it was better and recognized it from when my son looks at me. This song makes me think of my younger brother, passed away a few years ago at the age of 45. He loved to fish, esp. ocean fishing. Always shared his catch with me; I'm not a fisherman. So this song hits hard: The ocean breathes salty. RIP Jeff.
This takes me back to the fall of 2006. Winter break was starting at school, and my friend introduced me to this song and I would listen to it each afternoon leading into the summer of 07. Good times...
My first modest mouse album was the moon & Antarctica. My little brother and I would hang out and just sit in silence playing on our gameboys listening to the album. When good news for people who love bad news came out we ran to the store and bought it and listened to it over and over like the other one lol. We especially loved this song. When my brother had a traumatic brain injury and almost died and was in a coma for 3 weeks those two albums were the only things I could listen to that would bring me any comfort because it reminded me of the good times we had together. I would listen to them on my car CD player to and from the hospital every day when I went to visit him. Thank god he made it. I hope someday we can go see a modest mouse concert together. That would be awesome.
I saw modest mouse on 6.17.2023 and despite the changes in lineup and loss of Jeremiah, it was an amazing show. 19 song setlist including encore. They played the same venue one year prior and Jeremiah was still with us, but I missed that one. Definitely wasn't going to miss a second chance. I've had 8 brain surgeries and don't do many concerts due to migraines and fear of having another seizure, but it was more than worthwhile. I hope your brother recovers well enough to be able to go to a show someday. They're still touring like crazy and sound incredible.
My best friend is the one who introduced me to Modest Mouse with this song in particular. He shot himself on December 29, 2014, resulting in his untimely death. My heart always sinks and tears always come to my eyes whenever I hear the words "You wasted life, why wouldn't you waste death?" R.I.P. Kyle Thomas
I just find it amusing that their best known song, Float On, is so optimistic; all about how even though bad things happen, but the good things happen to balance out the bad and everything will work out okay. Then the rest of their discography talks about how the world is a cold, unfeeling place that doesn't give two shits about your happiness.
Once I realized that boy lost his dad (and presumptive his only friend) and is trying to make friends with animals who keep dying...made this grown ass man cry 😢
It was a helpful piece of art that helped me deal with the pain of losing my little sister. I should explain also that she and I were battling Multiple sclerosis and we both were in pain, I just could not leave and need to keep positive for my kids. Now my kids are grown, the pain in worse, but I am determined to keep the world filled with positive energy and enjoy what is left of my life.
Patricia Petersen Do yourself a huge favor and do research on CBD oil called Charlottes web. It will improve your quality of life....I realize this was 3 years ago and I hope you are well. ♥️
I remember back in the day "float on" would get played multiple times during the day on MTV and fuse, but this one only tended to pop up really late at night. I don't think I'd like this song nearly as much without those nights of having to see this video multiple times to assure myself it wasn't a weird dream.
This is one of the only songs and videos that can make me cry when I watch it. I know what I’m about to say isn’t the what the song or video was trying to say. But the moment that he wakes up and the crow is alive and opens its arms to him, that plus the music kicking in makes me think about what it would be like if when you did die - you actually did get to be reunited with the people and animals you loved who had died in your life. But then, moments later in the video it shows him waking up and the crow is still dead. And then that has always brought me the feeling that it also might be that everybody you see go is actually gone. And we should treat each other as such.
I always thought the instrumentals of this song had a magical quality to it- it captures the essence of the ocean and it intoxicates me from start to finish every time.
this brings me back to completely being in the moment with this song blasting in my teenager bedroom, with the windows open and fresh air flowing in..hearing and feeling every part of the song move through my soul. i could tear up from the nostalgia, and i still get the same feeling..
been listening to this band and especially this song and "dramamine" since I was young. they hold a special place in my heart. this band had a sound like no other.
It took me 11 years but I think I finally figured out this reference is (very sad) reference to Vincent VanGogh, who painted a painting with a wheat field with crows over them before killing himself. Famous for painting sunflowers which also appear in the video.
Modest Mouse was my friend's favorite band. He had the hot air balloon album art tattooed on his arm. He killed himself around 3 years ago. I always think of him when I listen to MM. R.I.P Ryan, all your friends and family love and miss you everyday. PS: Anyone reading this, tell your friends and loved ones that you love them.
Weird moment, I was just thinking of getting an MM tattoo. The balloon came up in my searches. I'm sure he was as beautiful as the album art, I'm sorry for your loss.
@@wallybonejengles5595 I'm glad you're still here, and as one human to another I have love for you. I wish you, and everyone else who needs to hear words of love, heard them more often too.
@@kevindavidson8281 Thank you for your words. Myself and a friend of mine have both had dreams of him that have, signaled that he is at peace. One dream I had about him, his arm was broken, but he told us he was moving to the mountains and that he was going to be okay. The overall mood was hopeful. Irl his ashes were sprinkled in the mountains so, at least I know he remains in a forest he loves very deeply. The balloon is a good tat for sure.
This song and their song dashboard has helped me in my times more than more can fathom, like isaac says. You wasted life why wouldn't you waste the afterlife. This song has helped me try to make an impact on life and now waste what was givin to me. I am sorry for your loss I do know how it feels personally throw friends of my own and regardless I'm sure they are not wasting away their afterlife
I heard this on the radio today and wondered if there was a music video for it. I'm glad there is. This one really tugs at the heartstrings. I wish MTV Classic would play this one more often, but the only thing of Modest Mouse that ever plays on there is "Float On"
My favorite band of all time. My best friend Tommy introduce me to Modest Mouse. He took his life back in early 2008. I cry everytime I listen to Dramamine & The world at large bkuz those were his favorite songs. Float On Gets to me also bkuz I feel like if he could have just held on longer, he would have been able to just Float On.... Rest In Peace Tommy.. I Love You Bro..
“When the earth folded in on itself and said "good luck, for your sake I hope heaven and hell are really there But I wouldn't hold my breath" You wasted life, why wouldn't you waste death?” Good lord man who comes up with lyrics like that..
Now this song reminds me of my guinea pig, who I witnessed pass away right in front of me. It wasn't easy, and a lot of everyday life still reminds me of her. It hurts a lot, and I doubt it will get to a point where it won't hurt anymore. But there's a tiny bit of closure in listening to this song over and over.
This song reminds of the childhood I never got to have and then makes me miss it... Like those people that are heartbroken because they've never been in a relationship m.
When I first heard Modest Mouse as a teenager in 2004 I was immediately hooked. I had never heard anything like them before. "Float On" was charming, weird, melodically impressive, and had a ton of energy. But it wasn't until I heard this song that I asked my mom for the album. "Ocean Breathes Salty" remains one of my favorite songs of all time 20 years later.
Me and you Nick cruising to this with a fresh j and a fresh outlook on life. You passed on too soon my friend. Its been 17 years now and you still bring a tear to my eyes friend. Thanks for making the good ol days the good ol days. Until the day we meet again on the other side.
The more we move ahead, the more we're stuck in rewind... I think that lyric means that the further in life we get, the more we reminisce, romanticize and miss the past... whether it be a simpler time in life, being a kid again, a time before we lost a loved one...I think a lot of our present moment is wasted on thinking about the past and then before you know it, you're old and gray, wondering where all the time went and why you didn't spend your younger years living in the present moment...
I was given this cd as a gift. Float on was a radio hit at the time and my girlfriend at the time thought I would like the cd. I remember the first time I heard this song I was driving to work and thinking about my older brother that passed away as a teenager. I love this song and it always reminds me of him.
God!!! I found Issac when I was uhh 14? Right after watching my dad die.. they helped me and sent me on a journey I could never really explain. Listen to all their stuff still and love the new things they come to! Forever all time favorite band ever (sorry Zep I got to live with these guys growing up and grow with them)
I saw them last night - they were AMAZING!!!! I can't wait to see them live again - I had no idea they rocked so hard! They didn't play any popular songs - but I loved them all. Now, listening to this - crying so much - such a beautiful song
This is the first music video I ever watched; the first song I remember listening to and everything stopping, no thoughts, couldn’t feel my brother and father right next to me, just me and the bird in the box. This is the first song I ever loved, some nights I’ll dream about the bird in the box, sometimes he flys away other times he lays still. Modest Mouse is awesome and I’m so grateful to have refound this song 15+ years later and to have it as my first
This song holds a place in my heart that can't exactly explsin why. Kinda of feel how the little boys life plays out like much how mine did growing up. Not having a father figure an really no faith to put into anything.
This was the song that made me love Modest Mouse as a band. Float On was ok but this was what made me buy the album and then buy every single else about that they made up to this point in 2004. I'm glad they did this as a single as I probably wouldn't have given the album any time of day to listen to.
I have been a fan of modest mouse for well over 15 years and still open people up too the awesomeness that is modest mouse, truly one or the most underrated bands of the last 20 years
Modest mouse will always be my favorite band, not just this song (although this song is just brilliant) but every song they have created is the epitome of original and creativity and lyrically no one holds a candle to Isaac Brock
This song is so touching and sad... the first sentences make my eyes watery :,-/ What a tragedy it is, living and knowing time passes by, we won´t get to live again, we´ll loose those who we love and they will some day loose us.
just lost my auntie (who was like my mother throughout my entire life) yesterday after a long, hard battle with stage 4 stomach cancer. this song helped me deal with the concept of mortality as I watched her waste away over the past year & has been the only thing there for me because I could never bring myself to open up to anyone as I struggled. I will carry her memory with me and think of her every time I hear this song... ❤️
I just went through something really similar. Some days are okay but some days I want to just hide in a corner. I cant say things will get better because I dont know. All I can say is just keep pushing through the hard days and hang in there.
one of the many songs that can evoke specific kinds of emotions from each different song from different bands and different genres..this song is one of it 🙂
RIP Jeremy (Jeremiah) Green. my friend and i got to see them live at the filmore in NC. my buddy had bought a Modest Mouse skateboard deck off of Jermy (as isaac called him) 's brother, and hooked us up with meeting him before the show. we met him, awesome dude, very down to earth. after chatting for a while of chatting he went back to get ready for the show. talked with isaac for a good bit that night, talked to him about how we met Jermy and he asked why he didnt invite us back with him, i spoke up and said "cuz we didnt ask". isaac looked at me and with an agreeing tone said "yeah that sounds about right. all you had to do was say suomethin" and just like that we coulda had a friend. the news hurts.
Reminds me of the time when i was a little boy I found a wounded humming bird in the middle of the road. Tried nurturing it back to full health, left a coke lid with water and sugar, a tech deck and a mini ramp just in case it wanted to skate. Hurried back home on my bike from school and it was dead. I cried so much. Buried the little bird in my back yard. That entire day I cried. I was like 8 years old. I'm 28 now and i still remember that sweet little humming bird.
Used to listen to the album to go to sleep in my younger years. Years later my best friend and i connect through the band. There were weeks when things were so desperate that the only way i could sleep were putting on this album and listening to it through the end. The bad nights id go to sleep after the good times were killing me. But it was always a good night if i fell asleep to the ocean breathes salty.
“you missed when time and life shook hands and said goodbye” this line has stuck with me so much that i have a literal tattoo of it. i love this song/band and each song makes me want to dissect the lyrics even if some don’t make sense, i’m sure we will make sense of it somehow.
came back to this song a year later really stoned and started reading this thinking it was someone else and freaked out. I am now commenting about that experience. Thank you for reading. Have a great day.
RIP Jeremiah Green. Always went above and beyond with his drumming.
i was searching for this coment :(
He did not play on this...
While he is in the video he did not play in the recording of this song (or the whole album)
How sad :(

You missed when time and life shook hands and said goodbye. Arguably my favorite lyric of all time
Mine is, "You wasted Life why wouldn't you waste Death..."
Daniel Austin absolutely you read my favorite verse no one has ever done that I'm in my husband's id but he never knew that
That whole verse is amazingly good.
I swore as a younger person it was "when tom and i shook hands and said goodbye" lol.
I always assumed it was "You missed when time and life shook hands and said, 'Good luck! For your sake, I hope heaven and hell are really there, but I wouldn't hold my breath.'" All as one phrase
“You wasted life. Why wouldn’t you waste death?” Those lyrics still get to me years after I first heard this song, it still brings tears to my eyes.

A lyric more religious people need to take to heart.

I'm gonna put that quote on my obituary when I die. It literally describes me to a Tee

How does this band make me feel so alive yet dead inside at the same time.
Love them.
They wanted it to be paradoxical. In a way, they are revealing the secret of life.
Because they bring into focus how it feels to be alive (and thus slowly dying) in a dead world that insists it isnt.
stop doing drugs

Kyle Thomas
Hugs 🖤
I just find it amusing that their best known song, Float On, is so optimistic; all about how even though bad things happen, but the good things happen to balance out the bad and everything will work out okay. Then the rest of their discography talks about how the world is a cold, unfeeling place that doesn't give two shits about your happiness.
And we’ll all float on alright
😂😂Right?
the analogies are amazing. the lyrics are spectacular. I wish more people had talent like this. true use of a gifting here
couldn't agree more with you!
ever heard of lucid rivers? you might like them
I love modest mouse
which kind of analogies?
Modest Mouse: Always a downer in an uplifting way, somehow...

Giving_Teh_Beast very nice of you
she probably is by now. she hasnt liked anything in 3 years. rip
@@ClassicSternFan I hope you one day feel like the lowest piece of dirt for saying that.
And we should treat each other as such.
loved your comment on this and totally think the same
This is one of the most polite comment sections I've ever seen. Scrolled through three threads and so far have not witnessed hate.
Well, that was short-lived
Modest Mouse will do that lol
Adam Dorsheimer your very correct! I hope you have a great day😊.
Srank Finatra please take that somewhere else. He didn’t even say anything to you.
@@granthoyer7136 I think it was a joke. Pretty sure he doesn't actually think Adam is dumb.
Oh teenage girl that discovered this song in midst of angst would be disappointed to know that we've rediscovered it in the deepest of grief
I always thought the instrumentals of this song had a magical quality to it- it captures the essence of the ocean and it intoxicates
me from start to finish every time.
I forgot how much I really liked this song.
this brings me back to completely being in the moment with this song blasting in my teenager bedroom, with the windows open and fresh air flowing in..hearing and feeling every part of the song move through my soul. i could tear up from the nostalgia, and i still get the same feeling..
Same :)
You know the feeling when something speaks to your soul? I'm feeling that.
Modest Mouse = One of top ten most underrated rock bands of alltime!
been listening to this band and especially this song and "dramamine" since I was young. they hold a special place in my heart. this band had a sound like no other.
It took me 11 years but I think I finally figured out this reference is (very sad) reference to Vincent VanGogh, who painted a painting with a wheat field with crows over them before killing himself. Famous for painting sunflowers which also appear in the video.
The video has only been up for six years
it was nominated for a VMA for best cinematography in 2005...before youtube videos were played on TV.
Grace Thomas yea good news for people who love bad news came out in 2005
Grace Thomas dame I had to look at my cd lol
Not sure bout the video but this song is about his dad dying. Very sad
My friend died of cervical cancer back in May. She would have been 34 as of June 17th. This song really makes me think of her.
I'm sorry 😞
RIP Jeremiah Green. I just heard of his passing, and had to give another listen to some of my favorite songs by these guys.
Doing the same right now. The guy sure played a mean beat huh?
Damn… puts living on this fucked up rock we call Earth in perspective don’t it.
@@PJL7095 It sure does
This song always gives my consciousness.......one great big breath of fresh air.......and life is always.....complicated....
Modest Mouse is a great Indie rock band. I love just about everything they have done. :)
A kid playing catch with a scarecrow is some powerful imagery.
most beautiful song at the right moment...keep going you wonderful people.
Totally forgot this song. Killer bridge, that guitar is sick.
This song always speaks directly to my soul. I have no idea why, but I'm not arguing with it.
I plan to be here a long long time out of pure spite, but i wish i heard those words more often you know?
This song got me through a VERY hard time in my life.
+J.R. Miller Me too, man. I've had this album since I was 10 or 12 years old. It's beautiful
“When the earth folded in on itself and said "good luck, for your sake I hope heaven and hell are really there
But I wouldn't hold my breath"
You wasted life, why wouldn't you waste death?”
Good lord man who comes up with lyrics like that..
I just spent the last week with my good friend in the hospice. He passed two hours ago .Ill always remember you brother.
I'm sorry for ur loss may he rest in peace 🕊️
I've always loved Modest Mouse' (songs & ) lyrics -- they are exactly what I think, and feel. Thanks MM. x
This song reminds of the childhood I never got to have and then makes me miss it... Like those people that are heartbroken because they've never been in a relationship m.
im those people,
I'm 24 and never been in a relationship
such a gorgeous song
When I first heard Modest Mouse as a teenager in 2004 I was immediately hooked. I had never heard anything like them before. "Float On" was charming, weird, melodically impressive, and had a ton of energy. But it wasn't until I heard this song that I asked my mom for the album. "Ocean Breathes Salty" remains one of my favorite songs of all time 20 years later.
Strong feelings build up when i watch this
Me and you Nick cruising to this with a fresh j and a fresh outlook on life. You passed on too soon my friend. Its been 17 years now and you still bring a tear to my eyes friend. Thanks for making the good ol days the good ol days. Until the day we meet again on the other side.
this shit hits so home at times i honestly think that this can give peace of mind at times
I can't stop crying after listening and watching this video
These guys have become one of my favorite bands!
Josh Leone (correction) *favorite band
Says Russel from Gorillaz. Is this what you've been doing when you became a giant???
CrossingArrows I've found an affinity with rock and soul type stuff
I was given this cd as a gift. Float on was a radio hit at the time and my girlfriend at the time thought I would like the cd. I remember the first time I heard this song I was driving to work and thinking about my older brother that passed away as a teenager. I love this song and it always reminds me of him.
Modest Mouse is to blame for my philosophical journey's beginning. let's face it, a highly artistic band.
Agreed. Love em'
absolutely the same for me. This band was mind expansive for me. A decade and a half later i'm finding they still have much to teach me.
Same :)
youve described them perfectly
Best band to ever grace this planet
Couldnt agree more.
Modest Mouse is awesome and I’m so grateful to have refound this song 15+ years later and to have it as my first
Beautiful songwriting.
I miss you, Dad ❤️
Hope you're doing alright. I've been there.
hello tmrw I feel the same way. My dad loved Modest Mouse so I ended up growing up on this stuff
Also my first thought when I saw the kid playing catch with the scarecrow.
@@ericjohnson6634 why, may I ask?

Te quiero, Papi!
This song holds a place in my heart that can't exactly explsin why. Kinda of feel how the little boys life plays out like much how mine did growing up. Not having a father figure an really no faith to put into anything.
this album is litterally a gem i love it it just feel so real
at 2:28 when he opens the box and Isaac waves i laughed so hard but then remembered how sad this song was
This masterpiece only has 7.5 million views and other shit has 100M... UNDERRATED SONG BY MODEST MOUSE
gfrp enjoy your life.
Yeah I was just watching a video for a bruno mars song and it has 90 millions views so unfair
why would you want this to have hundreds of millions of views
Bruh you realize most modest mouse songs have less than like a 100,000 views some have practically. Nothing
being that modest mouse is from the 90’s, most people don’t need TH-cam to listen to a band they have on a cd or vinyl.
This was the song that made me love Modest Mouse as a band. Float On was ok but this was what made me buy the album and then buy every single else about that they made up to this point in 2004. I'm glad they did this as a single as I probably wouldn't have given the album any time of day to listen to.
I lost a friend a couple years ago during a surgery, and this song makes me think of him. I have to hope we will meet again one day, but I don't know.
_you wasted life why wouldn't you waste death_

You wasted life, why wouldn't you waste teh afterlife? :3

Yo lil boom you listen to modest mouse
I have been a fan of modest mouse for well over 15 years and still open people up too the awesomeness that is modest mouse, truly one or the most underrated bands of the last 20 years
The empathetic effort transcends throughout the universe regardless of the result of ones actions
The lessons in this song are mind blowing... absolutely mind blowing. 😥😥
Modest mouse will always be my favorite band, not just this song (although this song is just brilliant) but every song they have created is the epitome of original and creativity and lyrically no one holds a candle to Isaac Brock
This song is so touching and sad... the first sentences make my eyes watery :,-/
What a tragedy it is, living and knowing time passes by, we won´t get to live again, we´ll loose those who we love and they will some day loose us.
just lost my auntie (who was like my mother throughout my entire life) yesterday after a long, hard battle with stage 4 stomach cancer. this song helped me deal with the concept of mortality as I watched her waste away over the past year & has been the only thing there for me because I could never bring myself to open up to anyone as I struggled. I will carry her memory with me and think of her every time I hear this song... ❤️
I just went through something really similar. Some days are okay but some days I want to just hide in a corner. I cant say things will get better because I dont know. All I can say is just keep pushing through the hard days and hang in there.
one of the many songs that can evoke specific kinds of emotions from each different song from different bands and different genres..this song is one of it 🙂
you missed when time and life shook hands and said goodbye
i went through a period where i had this song perpetually stuck in my head
Violet Maxwell same, so much same
"time and life shook hands and said goodbye"
i love this line quite a bit.
"When time and life shook hands and said goodbye," always resonates.
This song is saddest as hell. And, definitely, this is pure masterpiece.
This song really helped me contextualise my feelings when my partner killed herself. GG, Modest Mouse. I owe ya one.
Loved modest mouse for 15 years now, this is literally my first vid. Jaw dropped, goosebumps, sorry love, but I wont be up to bed for a few hours.
+JoeFromGreenbush I get goosebumps too. They are amazing. And their videos, wooooo, are they ever bizarre. And very good.
They are criminally underrated though

“you missed when time and life shook hands and said goodbye” this line has stuck with me so much that i have a literal tattoo of it. i love this song/band and each song makes me want to dissect the lyrics even if some don’t make sense, i’m sure we will make sense of it somehow.
came back to this song a year later really stoned and started reading this thinking it was someone else and freaked out. I am now commenting about that experience. Thank you for reading. Have a great day.
I was jamming out to this in 6th grade along with franz ferdinand. Now what band do you think I stuck with.
