"So brown eyes I'll hold you near, cuz you're the only song I want to hear." And the last line is exactly how I feel my husband's presence and love in my life: "a melody softly soaring through my atmosphere." He's everywhere, gently, letting me be me but existing all around and alongside me. It's a beautiful song.
Everytime I've ever played this song at my parents house my mother screamed "THIS SOUNDS LIKE AN REM SONG I LOVE IT" and she, to this day, wants to hear this song everytime I go to her house for a drink lol. As a 24 year old I imagine this song will be in my head for the rest of my life because of this. Great song
I just held my Father's hand while my Mom held his other hand this evening as we let him go be with God when we made the decision to honor his end of life wishes - I've been listening to this song 10 times a day for weeks now as we've witnessed his decline. This is one of those moments where an amazing song literally has helped me get through the worst day of my life - lyrics are up for grabs depending on your situation. I'm about to short circuit my keyboard with my tears dropping on it - thank you for this song
This says everything one needs to know about the power of music. I’m so sorry for your loss. I deeply respect you honoring your fathers wishes in such a difficult way. May you be a peace.
September 2023 and we're still here.. I pray everyone who reads this reaches their goals and find the true meaning of love, purpose, and fulfillment. All will be ok. One love
I bought this CD in September of 2005 just before I took a Greyhound bus to move to Florida, and the first time I heard it, I was on the bus in Tennessee staring out the window at the mountains. It was pretty fucking magical.
+Ray Klish Bro, similar story, had a Greyhound trip from Oklahoma to Canada in 2005, bought my first MP3 player and digital camera, and loaded that player with a bunch of Death Cab, this song was indeed AWESOME going through the mountains.
I bought it not knowing anything about them. I thought the album cover was cool, so I took a chance. Now I come back and listen to remember all of the old memories from back then.
Plans came out 9 years ago? Seems like it was yesterday that I listened to Where soul meets body on repeat in an endless summer of house parties and spontaneous trips. Being an adult fucking sucks...
Zeb Andersson Preach! Remember when you were a kid and a day lasted FOREVER? Now I blink and I've missed something....Couple more years and it'll just be a passing blur of time.
Some critic once said a great song begins many times. This song is a masterpiece with several initiations, refocusing of emotion + energy, as if softly shifting to new realms.
I want to live where soul meets body And let the sun wrap its arms around me and Bathe my skin in water cool and cleansing And feel Feel what it's like to be new 'Cause in my head there's a Greyhound station Where I send my thoughts to far off destinations So they may have a chance of finding a place where they're Far more suited than here I cannot guess what we'll discover When we turn the dirt with our palms cupped like shovels But I know our filthy hands can wash one another's And not one speck will remain I do believe it's true That there are roads left in both of our shoes But if the silence takes you Then I hope it takes me too So brown eyes I'll hold you near 'Cause you're the only song I want to hear A melody softly soaring through my atmosphere Where soul meets body Where soul meets body Where soul meets body I do believe it's true That there are roads left in both of our shoes But if the silence takes you Then I hope it takes me too So brown eyes I'll hold you near 'Cause you're the only song I want to hear A melody softly soaring through my atmosphere A melody softly soaring through my atmosphere A melody softly soaring through my atmosphere A melody softly soaring through my atmosphere
@@kellyparkinson8594 for sure. I heard an early 90's song when I was in an elevator the other day. It was found out about you by the gin blossoms. I bought that CD when it came out. Then I remembered being a kid and making fun of my mom for hearing a song that came out when she was a kid when we were in an elevator together. Damn. What goes around comes around I guess.
The part that goes “So brown eyes i hold you near, cause youre the only sound i wanna hear” makes me think of my baby every time:) i love her with all my soul
I see a lot of teens and young adults remembering when this song was released and their memories about it. I’m no longer a teen, almost in my 45 and just heard this song today while driving and loved it right away. Good thing Shazam helped me save it! Such a gorgeous song, poetic lyrics, simply magic! Congrats to the band! “ A melody softly soaring through my atmosphere” just love this 🥰
Marriage struggles are not fun. The lyrics of this song are not only beautiful, but they have healing power. Seriously. When two people are married, have been married before and are at an emotional crossroads, "I do believe it's true that there are roads left in both of our shoes" and "You're the only song I want to hear, a melody softly soaring through my atmosphere" take on a whole new meaning. This might be the most beautiful song I've ever heard.
Used to sing this song as a lullaby to my baby boy from 2004 when he was born to several years later. He used to call it the 'bada song'. This song was a saving grace for me being a single dad dealing with the loneliness. Music bridged the gap for me to keep going, and this helped a ton.
Got a girlfriend just by playing and singing this song once. She turned out to be a psycho and bear me a daughter who I have custody of... Best time of my life! Thanks Death Cab!!
I was all serious, then read this lol oh bro, the stories we all have eh but some of us always tend to get those crazy stories lol I one of them too. Enjoy your daughter!!
Ronan RiemanJohns The lyrics are really simple compared to the other artists out there. It's actually very easy to understand. Also, simple lyrics doesn't mean that it's worse.
Ronan RiemanJohns Lyrics are meant to be interpreted however you want. It seems like you're not someone who's into music. Also, your grammar is horrendous.
My best friend passed away and shortly after I asked her where she was while I was praying. This song started to play on the radio right after and I knew it was her answer. She had brown eyes too so it fits perfectly.
Jennifer...This used to be my (and pups) song. His name was Bentley, a miniature Dachshund with big brown eyes...When I knew he was close to passing I wold hold him tight and listen to this with headphones in and break down crying like a child...I feel your pain
Just got a ticket to see these guys in my city this summer. Even though I'll be going alone and I don't know more than 3-4 of their songs, I know I'm gonna have a great time just because of this masterpiece alone. It's gonna be my first time at a band show... can't wait
Saw them in Dallas 9 years ago. Absolutely amazing song. The buildup for I Will Possess Your Heart was astonishing. I hope and know you’ll have a blast!!
My daughter got me listening to this band when she was in college in 2006. Still do in 2024! With a new grandbaby from kid way out of college now. Hes gonna love it too!
CoolGuyBladed seriously, my sentiments EXACTLY! I still remember being in middle school, waking up before school and watching FUSE and seeing this video for the first time. It made me realize how excellent music can make you feel even at the most trivial moment, it almost changes how you view things in a way
this song helped me in my darkest most difficult times when I suffered intense trauma and abuse. Happy it exists to make me feel alive and have tears of joy that everything is gonna be okay cause I'm free.
@@yucatansuckaman5726 some songs are very powerful...and is true that they can give a person strength and faith to get threw a very bad patch in life....
The arrangement chord progression and melody really make this song, not to mention the refrain. uhh divine songs like this really make you feel alive. I know our filthy hands can wash one another.
I went to college with a guy in 2005 who was a big metal head. Dude loved bands harder than anything I'd ever heard. One night he's like, "Yeah I'm going to see death cab for cutie tonight." I looked them up in TH-cam's infancy, or possibly even limewires end stages, and this is what I found. Great times.
This song brings me an electric chill, an eye full of tears both of sadness and happiness. Hard to believe this song is 20 years old . ❤❤❤ To everyone still listening
It feels like almost all Death Cab fans are people in their late 20s, early 30s, reminiscing about their younger years! Going through these comments, I can't count the amount of comments that start with something like "I remember when this first came out..." It's funny to me, because I got the exact same feeling when I heard this song again today, and decided to look it up.
Well I remember when I first hear this song... about 3 hours ago. I was too busy listening to iron maiden and blind guardian in 2005 to notice stuff like this. happy for songza and youtube to help me broaden my musical horizons.
Underrated and amazing singer. I play guitar & sing, and tried this song, and the singing is the greatest challenge, as Gibbard varies his notes up & down so beautifully & skillfully, and the texture of his voice is so delicious to savor.
Very late reply but absolutely yes. Have you seen his Tiny Desk concert? Anyone who sounds exactly the same no matter whether live, acoustic, whatever.... has got the gift
41 here. I didn't hear this until I heard it in the background at a CVS a couple times, and i figured it was some YES b-side I never heard. I really dig it.
Dedicated to my father..and the love of my life Beth. I pray they have met in another life. I Miss them so much..this is for you Dad please tell Beth I love her
I think there is nostalgia for this song because it’s from DCFC’s opus. I love their whole catalog, but it’s hard with a band like this because Transatlanticism and Plans were both back to back masterpieces. Hard to top. I think the band knows that too. Latest album is great, but man those two albums were their swan song even though they’re not done as a band yet.
@@adamdutchdurham6771 The crazy thing is that music from the 1990's/2000's is basically to 30 year olds today what classic rock was to 30 year olds in the 90's. Like... I was born in 1988, and my mom listened to The wall a lot in 1994... that shit was still KINDA NEW (15 years old), and all of these classic "2000's" albums are hitting that age or older now.
This was playing on the radio of a cd store I was in, holding a stack of music. I put some of that back and immediately bought this cd for this song alone. I was not disappointed.
I remember the first time I found this song so many years ago it barely had any views. This track got me through a rough patch in my life. I remember just feeling sad all the time, and listening to this one song could bring me from feeling so down low to way up high. It's good to see that they are being noticed more, and going somewhere.
Trevor Philips dw about any shit other people are saying, it's good that you have that respect for the song, and the ability to bring up topics other people are afraid to talk about. If this song helped you- Good for you!

Lyrics:
I want to live where soul meets body
And let the sun wrap its arms around me,
And bathe my skin in water cool and cleansing
And feel... feel what it's like to be new.
'Cause in my head
There's a Greyhound station
Where I send my thoughts
To far-off destinations
So they may have a chance
Of finding a place where they're
Far more suited than here.
I cannot guess what we'll discover
When we turn the dirt with our palms cupped like shovels,
But I know our filthy hands can wash one another's
And not one speck will remain.
I do believe it's true
That there are roads left in both of our shoes,
But if the silence takes you
Then I hope it takes me too.
So brown eyes, I'll hold you near,
'Cause you're the only song I want to hear.
A melody softly soaring through my atmosphere.
Where soul meets body.
Where soul meets body.
Where soul meets body.
And I do believe it's true
That there are roads left in both of our shoes,
But if the silence takes you
Then I hope it takes me too.
So brown eyes, I'll hold you near,
'Cause you're the only song I want to hear.
A melody softly soaring through my atmosphere.
A melody softly soaring through my atmosphere.
A melody softly soaring through my atmosphere.

AGREED!!!
This is autumn for me. Don't know why but I keep getting back to this song in early fall every year.
I’m here in October, definitely feel this is a great autumn song
We love fall, just as we love this song.
Great song
I LOVED reading your comment! What a great post. And by the way, your Mom sounds really cool with great taste in music. She raised you right.
I just said this before I read your comment 😁
Your mom has excellent taste in music, it seems.
Store that memory inside you forever. And then many years from now, play it at her funeral. She’ll still be listening. ❤️
I’m guessing I’m old enough to be your mom, because she’s right.
Back when this music was just called "indie" and you weren't a hipster for listening to it.
Those were times! Totally agree with you
I remember them on a warped tour way back in 2002 or 2003. Do kids now days.
TheGrayBox Who cares what some people say or think?
Yeah, but I like being different from everyone. Except when they make fun of your music preference. That is bothersome.
on my head there a greyhound station
I hear you
September 2023 and we're still here.. I pray everyone who reads this reaches their goals and find the true meaning of love, purpose, and fulfillment. All will be ok. One love
Thank you so much, one love indeed 💓✊
I bought this CD in September of 2005 just before I took a Greyhound bus to move to Florida, and the first time I heard it, I was on the bus in Tennessee staring out the window at the mountains. It was pretty fucking magical.
+Ray Klish Bro, similar story, had a Greyhound trip from Oklahoma to Canada in 2005, bought my first MP3 player and digital camera, and loaded that player with a bunch of Death Cab, this song was indeed AWESOME going through the mountains.
+Andrew Haley i was also in the mountians on a greyhound listening to this song in 2005
Ray Klish im with you. On my way to Dallas
Florida. Just booked a flight! ✈️✈️🏖🏖❤️❤️🍀🦋☘️
That's brilliant, I'm 47 and feel even more that same way!
Milenko Clownstien Makes me tear up. Not a bad thing, though.
Milenko Clownstien Reading your comment while listening to this song in the background made me cry so hard....it's so TRUE.
Zeb Andersson it does suck. But you could do something that makes you happy, and go do something spontaneous :)
Some critic once said a great song begins many times. This song is a masterpiece with several initiations, refocusing of emotion + energy, as if softly shifting to new realms.
I agree - this song is incredible
I think Ashes of American Flags is a great example of that the way each verse becomes its own world
The BEST song ever!!!
I'm doing a split shift. I live in the woods. I'm worn out and now I feel love. Power of music. Glad this song is still being heard. It resonates.
I want to live where soul meets body
And let the sun wrap its arms around me and
Bathe my skin in water cool and cleansing
And feel
Feel what it's like to be new
'Cause in my head there's a Greyhound station
Where I send my thoughts to far off destinations
So they may have a chance of finding a place where they're
Far more suited than here
I cannot guess what we'll discover
When we turn the dirt with our palms cupped like shovels
But I know our filthy hands can wash one another's
And not one speck will remain
I do believe it's true
That there are roads left in both of our shoes
But if the silence takes you
Then I hope it takes me too
So brown eyes I'll hold you near
'Cause you're the only song I want to hear
A melody softly soaring through my atmosphere
Where soul meets body
Where soul meets body
Where soul meets body
I do believe it's true
That there are roads left in both of our shoes
But if the silence takes you
Then I hope it takes me too
So brown eyes I'll hold you near
'Cause you're the only song I want to hear
A melody softly soaring through my atmosphere
A melody softly soaring through my atmosphere
A melody softly soaring through my atmosphere
A melody softly soaring through my atmosphere
Thank you.

I didn’t know all of this was said in the song. Such beautiful, eloquent poetry. Thank you.
Thanks for pasting what we could have looked up
Nice! TY!
Nostalgia, now I know how my parents feel when they hear 80’s music.
I wasn't even alive for the 80's but I have a ton of nostalgia for that era. Probably because so much of the media I consumed as a kid was from then
God I'm old
WORD
@@kellyparkinson8594 for sure. I heard an early 90's song when I was in an elevator the other day. It was found out about you by the gin blossoms. I bought that CD when it came out. Then I remembered being a kid and making fun of my mom for hearing a song that came out when she was a kid when we were in an elevator together. Damn. What goes around comes around I guess.
@@erikshanks2626 hahahahahaha fuuuuuck
The part that goes “So brown eyes i hold you near, cause youre the only sound i wanna hear” makes me think of my baby every time:) i love her with all my soul
I'm sad because I thought it was "So Proud as I hold you near."... I'm still going to sing it that way 😛
I see a lot of teens and young adults remembering when this song was released and their memories about it. I’m no longer a teen, almost in my 45 and just heard this song today while driving and loved it right away. Good thing Shazam helped me save it! Such a gorgeous song, poetic lyrics, simply magic! Congrats to the band! “ A melody softly soaring through my atmosphere” just love this 🥰
I did the exact same thing just yesterday!!
I did the same thing today
Funny. I am 45. I heard this for the first time today. I love it. We have the same story lol.
@Chadfield Clapsaddle Why you wanna say something so hateful? Wow. Have a good life, Kim Jon Un.
This is a beautiful song.
I'll follow you into the dark
Absolutely beautiful. It could be 20 minutes longer and it would still be too short.
😊😭 beautifully said!!!!
I think people can agree, best part of song is 2:08 (:
+Intoxicated Meta Absolutely...! Those are some of the most moving lyrics I've ever heard. Yes..that and 1:11.
Agreed but like yin n yang, the first part allows us ti appreciate it more
Intoxicated Meta absolutely
Yup when that beat drops!!
totalmente de acuerdo
Used to sing this song as a lullaby to my baby boy from 2004 when he was born to several years later. He used to call it the 'bada song'. This song was a saving grace for me being a single dad dealing with the loneliness. Music bridged the gap for me to keep going, and this helped a ton.
Masterpiece - perfect song, perfect lyrics, perfect video.
Got a girlfriend just by playing and singing this song once. She turned out to be a psycho and bear me a daughter who I have custody of... Best time of my life! Thanks Death Cab!!
One of the best comments on TH-cam I've ever heard 👂 👏
Rock on adam
Oh my gosh I spit my Diet Coke out reading this comment 🤣… but congrats on your daughter, and be careful playing death cab for the ladies!
I was all serious, then read this lol oh bro, the stories we all have eh but some of us always tend to get those crazy stories lol I one of them too. Enjoy your daughter!!

One of my favourite songs. That instrumental moment in the center is Godly.
I’m incredibly grateful to the makers of Himym for putting this music into the series. When Ted first sees Victoria. Simply perfect ❤️
1:11 instant goosebumps for me. " If the silence takes you then I hope it takes me too". Love it!
You like simple lyrics over subtle ones?
shootingmen Aw, get off your high horse. It's a very good lyric, even if you don't understand it.
Ronan RiemanJohns The lyrics are really simple compared to the other artists out there. It's actually very easy to understand. Also, simple lyrics doesn't mean that it's worse.
Yes, I'm sure your interpretation of the lyrics was synonymous with the author's. Like I said, high horse.
Amazing
Bro...
I'm sorry tho
im sorry for your lost GOD works in mystey ways
Jennifer...This used to be my (and pups) song. His name was Bentley, a miniature Dachshund with big brown eyes...When I knew he was close to passing I wold hold him tight and listen to this with headphones in and break down crying like a child...I feel your pain
A perfect, melodic, lyrical, exquisite song. So gorgeous.
Just got a ticket to see these guys in my city this summer. Even though I'll be going alone and I don't know more than 3-4 of their songs, I know I'm gonna have a great time just because of this masterpiece alone. It's gonna be my first time at a band show... can't wait
This is so good but you must hear “Winding Road” or “Live Not Survive” by SLT 🤘🎹🎶
Slightly jealous that of all of the bands, this is going to be your first live show. You are in for a treat!
Saw them in Dallas 9 years ago. Absolutely amazing song. The buildup for I Will Possess Your Heart was astonishing. I hope and know you’ll have a blast!!
Have you gone to the concert yet? We want to know how your experience was!
How was it? I just saw them!
One of my favorite songs ever.
Mine too! I've loved this song unconditionally for the last 14 years

"A melody softly soaring through my atmosphere"
One of the most underrated bands ever
the most underrated in my opinion
My daughter got me listening to this band when she was in college in 2006. Still do in 2024! With a new grandbaby from kid way out of college now. Hes gonna love it too!
this song makes me love the fact that I am a human
LostInMemes 765 I couldn't have said it better if I tried.
I hate the fact that you and I are humans. That is why, although I am a cutie, I resist getting into a deathcab.
NeverPoting me too!
HaomUHC
Yay
CoolGuyBladed seriously, my sentiments EXACTLY! I still remember being in middle school, waking up before school and watching FUSE and seeing this video for the first time. It made me realize how excellent music can make you feel even at the most trivial moment, it almost changes how you view things in a way
this song helped me in my darkest most difficult times when I suffered intense trauma and abuse. Happy it exists to make me feel alive and have tears of joy that everything is gonna be okay cause I'm free.
👍
hey bro, trust in jesus . i was there too and he was the only one that saved me.

The arrangement chord progression and melody really make this song, not to mention the refrain. uhh divine songs like this really make you feel alive. I know our filthy hands can wash one another.
Completely agree, this is such a masterpiece in terms of arrangements between all intro (including the voice, the harmonics too)
This song is a masterpiece. Always listening to this until this day
I went to college with a guy in 2005 who was a big metal head. Dude loved bands harder than anything I'd ever heard. One night he's like, "Yeah I'm going to see death cab for cutie tonight." I looked them up in TH-cam's infancy, or possibly even limewires end stages, and this is what I found. Great times.
truth is, a lot of metal \ punk heads used to listen to DCFC. Good music speaks an universal lingo... :)
Was his name Thomas by chance?
I'm a huge metal head. This is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard

this song makes me miss memories i never had
This song brings me an electric chill, an eye full of tears both of sadness and happiness. Hard to believe this song is 20 years old . ❤❤❤ To everyone still listening
It feels like almost all Death Cab fans are people in their late 20s, early 30s, reminiscing about their younger years! Going through these comments, I can't count the amount of comments that start with something like "I remember when this first came out..." It's funny to me, because I got the exact same feeling when I heard this song again today, and decided to look it up.
I'm only 13 and it is my favorite song
I'm 16 and find it really sad that more people my age don't listen to this band.
I'm in my teens. I really like Death Cab for Cutie and someday I'll be your age looking back on it :)
+silvsilvsilv Everyone gets that nostalgic feeling listening to this song. I got the feeling the first time I heard it, last year.
Well I remember when I first hear this song... about 3 hours ago. I was too busy listening to iron maiden and blind guardian in 2005 to notice stuff like this. happy for songza and youtube to help me broaden my musical horizons.
i always start crying at "if the silence takes you then i hope it takes me too."
yeahh same
Yeah it's one of my favorite lines from anything ever, reminds me of the song "I'll follow you into the dark" which is also by them.
yeah me too.
You are not alone with your thoughts!

Any OGs got to see this premiere on MTV? Was floored then, still floored now.
This song still slaps over a decade later ❤
It really is a very well written song.
Timeless amazing song
He has the sweetest voice in the world
Underrated and amazing singer. I play guitar & sing, and tried this song, and the singing is the greatest challenge, as Gibbard varies his notes up & down so beautifully & skillfully, and the texture of his voice is so delicious to savor.
Absolutely
He has a "boy next door" voice but he knows how to use it well.
Very late reply but absolutely yes.
Have you seen his Tiny Desk concert? Anyone who sounds exactly the same no matter whether live, acoustic, whatever.... has got the gift
This takes me back to 2005 much better year than 2020.
Yep. Reminded me when I was doing undergraduate courses at the university going on the weekends very early morning.
since I was born my dad played me this music every so often, it brings back memories
I was in high school when this song came out. I haven't heard it in years 😭💜💜💜 The lyrics are so beautifully written.

When everyone in the comments speaks as this song was from sixty years ago
lol yeah
kinda old tho lol 14 years it's enough time
I think there is nostalgia for this song because it’s from DCFC’s opus. I love their whole catalog, but it’s hard with a band like this because Transatlanticism and Plans were both back to back masterpieces. Hard to top. I think the band knows that too. Latest album is great, but man those two albums were their swan song even though they’re not done as a band yet.
It's a weird thing with 2000s Indie. People feel closer to 1970s classic rock than they do to 2000s indie in some cases!
I remember when this used to be on the radio definitely get a nostalgic feeling from this.
This was playing on the radio of a cd store I was in, holding a stack of music. I put some of that back and immediately bought this cd for this song alone. I was not disappointed.
There's clearly no soul inside someone who dislikes this

Anyone who likes this kind of music is clueless as to what real music is.
