    Somehow, Sonic slipped passed the censors (me). I can't believe I didn't notice that.
    This is my most hilarious shame. I am comically embarrassed.

    I always knew Nintendo started as a playing card company in the 1880's. However, the story as to _why_ is fascinating. Great video as always.

      If not for the Yakuza they might still only be as famous as like, the Bicycle brand of playing cards, or something.

    • @aohige
      @aohige 6 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Too bad it's inaccurate. Everything in the video were fairly accurate until the whole yakuza connection. By the time Nintendo formed, the bans on these cards were lifted, and due to major companies from the capital had released rule books for the commoners, and the game was widely popular (and legal) among the common folks. It was already a boom and a fad when Nintendo formed.
      To suggest that Yakuza was only and/or primary customer for Nintendo is patently FALSE. It's a twisting of the fact to drive a narrative.

    You mention Ombre being a simple game several times, but the information that I've found on it (on Wikipedia, at least) indicates that it was pretty convoluted.
    Could you possibly mean the game Baccarat? That's a much simpler game and is very similar to Oicho-Kabu, the card game from which the Yakuza derive their name from the term for a particular losing hand.

    Am I the only one who fully expects to find "slaver" and "pious" together?

    • @Baigle1
      @Baigle1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      No. Christianity is paved with poor analogies. That and a lot of copypasta.

    • @dynamicworlds1
      @dynamicworlds1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Slavers used Christianity to justify slavery to themselves and as another way to tell the slaves in line as the Bible tells slaves to obey their masters.
      Missionaries were almost always sent to convert the slaves as it made them easier to control, NOT to improve the morals of the masters.
      Trying to pretend that anything but that and trying to get tithes from the profits of the slavers was anything but the exception is incredibly dishonest.

    • @jacksonmiller2886

      Don't forget that most abolitionists were deeply pious. Abolitionism was driven by the religious, notably Methodists. And for religious reasons.
      Slavery was driven by economics, not religion.

      how content ID and copyright are stupidly over-enforced, like many laws here, I wouldn't be surprised.

      The most unsettling problem is called "chilling effects". Even if it is obviously "fair use" or something similar in other countries, no private body stands a chance against nintendo in a legal battle.

    +Chris Hadfield's Rare Earth, your video essays on Japanese culture and history have been thoroughly interesting. What kinds of preparations have you done in order to produced these enjoyable videos? Have you spent much time in Japan or studied its language or culture prior to production? Or has your research been more recent?

    Ya know, I can only imagine the HUGE benefit to our species if the internet and television were used in this manner. Yeah you can't raise IQ but for those with some you CAN inform/educate and BETTER the species as a whole. This is worth supporting and you have a new patron. Keep up the great work and PLEASE don't go political!
