The Sound Couple - Back to Country

  • The Sound Couple is back again with the band that kicked off their 3 day series of gigs. We were dragging a bit for this one since we had a big show and late night and we were off again early to this gig. Thankfully, this one was inside and a bit more laid back but a bit more execution pressure because it was a surprise birthday party with a guest singer!
    As always, we learned some lessons and the big one here is to always have a mic ready at a private party regardless of what you are told! In this case, we were told that the in-house AV would handle these duties....well, who did they approach with a full room when they needed a mic? The house mic wasn't anywhere to found which lead us to scramble a bit....so, always have a mic ready!
    We hope you enjoy!
    The Sound Couple primarily use PreSonus gear featuring:
    PreSonus UC Surface
    PreSonus CDL12
    PreSonus CDL18s
    PreSonus 32R
    PreSonus SW5E
    PreSonus NSB Stageboxes
    PreSonus AVB-D16
    Please see our "About" for a more comprehensive list of gear we use.

    I can't understand why anyone would give you static about doing an idiot check.
    It's been normal practice for every gig I did for decades.
    The amount of stuff I found that musicians, DJs, video guys and everyone else left behind is mind-blowing.

    This video is yet another example of how “packed with useful tips and learning opportunities” the videos from The Sound Couple are and how helpful they are to those of us who strive to improve our own professionalism in the production sphere. Tackling the kinds of problems that can occur at a gig helps us understand how important consistent trouble-shooting procedures and techniques are to the problem-solving process.
    Thanks to Bart and Stacy for sharing their experiences with us. We appreciate you as individuals, as a team, and as consummate professionals.

    Bart and Stacey...love these blogs. You even make me feel your Anxiety. When there's no signal to a channel. My wife and I were watching and I said to her, they're going to line check the the XLR 1st... just saying.. been there many of times, even had a channel go bad on the stage box once... anyways, nice gig, nice place and some beer...oh forgot, the eye candy... love you two. Hope to share a drink with you two one day... Ricky

    That mention at the end about the console mixing is my biggest gripe about the iPad, and for me our normal scene is a gospel trio and it’s no big deal but then when we go do full bands or dance shows having the physical fader in hand makes it so much nicer and makes me quicker. Even if i do have to page for the input i still feel faster and more confident. But both have their place!!

    • @thesoundcouple
      @thesoundcouple  5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yes they do! For certain events, like weddings, we will never use a console however.

    I work with several (10+) musicians that use the X-Vive 2.4 in ears. Other than distance they love them. One 12pc band has 5 members using them. I love the recharge/no batteries and minimal size.

      I have my X VIVE users use an XLR cable to move the transmitter close to where they stand and spreading the XVIVEs across the stage helps eliminate cross talk. They almost always work great when I do that. I haven’t played a show yet where they didn’t work to be honest. Sometimes, users have to change to a different channel.

    Hello again guys! Another great vid. Yes, for quite a while on my QU-SB tablet mixer as well as my SQ-5 and SQ-6 mixers I had a button programmed as a MUTE for all AUX outputs. That way during a show, if I hear feedback I can quickly mute and unmute the wedges to isolate the feedback as to being main mix or monitor mix.

    Guitarists should handle their own solos with a boost pedal on their board to raise the volume 3-5dB. As a guitarist and sound guy, I’m surprised how often this gets left to the sound guy, who’s probably busy with other things. I'd never leave my tone or solos to someone else.
    I also love that the bass player had an amp but not the huge ones. I'll never understand the guys the bring refrigerator sized cabs to these events. :)

    • @thesoundcouple
      @thesoundcouple  8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I tend to agree....solo's yes if you are working with different sound engineers and I would suggest communicating that to them. Patch to patch...the levels should remain the same....you don't want to get in a battle or confuse the mix.

    From Namibia: Following you for a while now. Enjoy it a lot. As a musician (myself and my brother in a 2-piece band) we do our own sound. A bit tricky but educating my son to do this for us in future. Anyway, we also use the X-vive units. Sound great when we practice. We are still trying to get used to in-ears so we still do wedges in our live performances. 😂 Waiting for the right gig to properly test them. Anyway, please continue what you’re doing.

    Having physical faders in front of you is irreplaceable, the iPad is very comfortable and on certain occasions it is truly an extra weapon for controlling the FOH but the real mixer is something else

      It seems like you have a network issue going on that is preventing the iPad from connecting. The PreSonus Facebook groups are a wonderful resource with users that have a lot of experience.We would highly suggest exploring those, or the PreSonus forums (forums.presonus.com), or last to submit a support ticket...but would recommend the first two options to start with.
