Sometime six years prior to my railroading years. I did just that on this subdivision pre BNSF days. It was summer but the ride was cold once it got up to speed. My friend was wearing a light winter coat.He has done this many times before. He said the train will slow down when we get to Nerska then we can hop off. We got on at Pulaski and, picked up speed at Nerska! Between freezing to death and hoping this train would stop, i had a moment of introspection. I fell in love with the variety of wonderful smells of fresh vegetables growing in the various farmfields. Surprisingly, The vans didn't move much on those TTX flats of which most now serve to haul windmill blades. Dont ever throw a rock on the ballast in front of you between the cars at that speed. See, i know this guy that did that and he got hit in the head with the rock he threw while the train was cruising at 70 mph. I'm glad...i mean he was glad, his head was turned when it hit him. Yep!

Trains use air pressure to keep the brakes from being applied. If a car breaks loose, the entire train comes to a stop because of the loss in air pressure throughout the train. Under normal stopping, the engineeir simply reduces air pressure commensuate with the braking requirements.

The highest my radar gun clocked a freight at NY-36 in Churchville was 82 mph, verkfied by the track detector report on the scanner. I remembef a couple of Amtraks hitting 105 mph.
I went back last year, now a CSX lin Amtrak still screams, but the freight pokes along around 62 mph. A real bummer...
