Thanks for sharing Melanie! You’re an inspiration! Although I have a house, I want to try car camping in my RAV4. You make your Prius look as roomy as my RAV4! I plan to keep the one seat up, too. There are a lot more things I can do sitting there, and it will be easier for me to get into the bed side. I hope you’re doing well!
Melanie, This was a Big help! No Prius, but my small car is needing to be considered for my home when away from home :). Thx for sharing your resourcefulness.
Great video! The hybrid is pretty slick because you don't need any solar/batteries. I have the same Stryker in my truck camper. I have found it is the best way to boil water mainly for coffee. I carry ~2-3 small iso-butane cans with me.
There are some real benefits to the hybrids in addition to the incredible gas mileage! I have been impressed with the little Stryker stove too. It works really well and boils water fast. The fuel seems to last quite a while too as the stove is only on for a few minutes per boil.
This one is a 2014 Prius V. I think it's a bit more of a station wagon style than the regular Prius models. My understanding is they don't make the Prius V anymore, but I'm still learning all of the Prius stuff!
Good idea for the brake pedal pole! I tried running my cpap on just battery it lasted 3 hours so I guess I’ll try it with the hybrid system in but warning don’t do that in a garage!
Living in a Prius seems to be totally doable and economical👍. I would like to add one piece of advice. I see too many videos of women saying to always keep your keys handy and quick to find in case need get out of an area fast. You actually clipped your keys onto something. A better way is just to always have your keys on your person. If you are on one side of your car with your keys on the other side of your car, in case you have to make a quick decision (sometimes very quick), to get out of a situation that just came out of nowhere, first, you have to make it back your keys , second, hop in the driver's seat and take off. Why spend seconds making it to your keys when you can just have them on you already and get the heck out of there, girl?! That's what I'd do, and as a matter of fact, I do.
Really good advice and I totally agree. If your car have keys it would be good to have them on you. The Prius only has a fob so it’s actually already to go with the power button ready to be activated. Just hop in the front seat and push power on. Most people I know who live in their Prius keep their Prius on all the time for power and heat/air conditioning so it’s just a matter of stepping on the gas. Thanks for your comment. Really appreciate your thoughtfulness. ~Mel
Thank you for this informative video. Are you familiar enough with the Prius makes and models to recommend one? If not, no worries. I know there are a plethora of issues to keep in mind when buying used vehicles regardless of a recommended make or model. Still, any insight is appreciated!
Great question! I am not personally familiar enough with the Prius line, but I will ask Melanie if she is comfortable weighing in on that topic. It was only less than one year ago that I even drove a Prius for the first time, but I do have to say that I have been impressed with it.
From what Ive been getting gen 1 and 2 it's hard to find a good example, people don't take good care of EVS and they can total themselves more easily than a car if neglected. 2015 or newer - the battery lasts 10 years or more so you have headroom, it's the year that ironed out the issues I heard about
That was actually a landfill pick so unfortunately we don't have a link to that particular tray. It is a real wood tray though that Melanie did a bit of refinishing on after she acquired it.
They’re the little iso-butane canisters like the JetBoil uses. They’re sometimes a bit easier to find that the butane canisters used by the more traditional stoves. In either case though I find it worth keeping a few spares on hand.
We just use cellular data, but some people are starting to use Starlink which works fairly well as there are usually no obstructions. Cell data can work well if you are near major roads or not too far from towns, etc with towers. Once you venture too far out into the wilderness though satellite would be the only option. Much of Nevada, for example, has little to no cell coverage - including a lot of great public land areas.
No. I’m not in the Prius anymore. We’re married now and live in his camper. Much more room for two but we have vacationed at times in the Prius together. A bit tight though. 😊 ~Mel

That`s resourceful.

I worked in German car repair shops in the 70s & 80s. We called the grab handle above the Beetle glovebox the "Oh Jesus" bar.
Haha, too funny! Thanks for sharing! ~Mel
I've heard it referred to as the "Oh sh*t" handle in a truck or van. 😂
I really appreciate your ideas! Thank you.

Karin, I only wish that I had thought of something like that back in my car days... LOL
Yes, I appreciated your video. The window covering, and hanging ideas helped. Thank you.
Glad I could help. Thanks for watching! ~Mel

Thank you! So much I appreciate as i may be staying in my Lexus hybrid- very similar to Prius hatchback
Great information!
Innovative ideas for making things easier in the Prius
I may be biased - ok, I am definitely biased - but, in my opinion, Melanie had some great ideas and as good of a build as I have seen in any Prius.
Bathroom??
Thank you
Thanks for watching! ~Mel
Love your tips appreciate it very much...
Thank you and thanks for watching!
Some really good tips, thanks!!
Great video, Robert. What year and model is the Prius? I'm researching Prius' between 2010 & 2019.
This one is a 2014 Prius V. I think it's a bit more of a station wagon style than the regular Prius models. My understanding is they don't make the Prius V anymore, but I'm still learning all of the Prius stuff!

Heat pad or electric blanket is my favorite way to stay warm.

@tripod4228 Yes, so a Prius would actually make an excellent life on wheels vehicle, especially for a solo woman out on the road. Good point.
Thank you!
👍👍

I am a new follower of your channel
Greetings from Sweden 😊
Welcome!!
It's a pleasure to watch your videos😊
Hello Sweden! Love your meatballs! ~Mel

@@RobertWitham good to know! You’ve driven and seen so many versions of “van life” your opinion means something.
I suppose I have had a variety of vehicle experiences :) 😂

The car in the video is a prius v, which is a station wagon variant of the prius and is more practical and roomy.
Do you have a link to the TV tray that you used? It seemed like it was a lot smaller than normal ones :)
That was actually a landfill pick so unfortunately we don't have a link to that particular tray. It is a real wood tray though that Melanie did a bit of refinishing on after she acquired it.
I wish you had photos or sketches of your “frame.”
Hi Melanie, where and how do you take showers??
hi Robert and melanie by the way I sold yours and mine old minivan
What kind gas canister you use for the Stryker
They’re the little iso-butane canisters like the JetBoil uses. They’re sometimes a bit easier to find that the butane canisters used by the more traditional stoves. In either case though I find it worth keeping a few spares on hand.
I use my climate control on -30 Minnesota winters
what kind of internet connection would you use in the middle of the desert?

@@RobertWitham im gonna check that startling out. thank you so much Robert
She still lives like this?

Where is the dog now?
My sweet Pomeranian Theo passed away. I miss him very much. ~Mel
Melanie is an interesting lady.
Small car,big ideas😊
Stryker is better than jet boil bc you use regular Coleman propane green cans.
Never heard of this. I’ll have to look into that. Thanks for your comment! ~Mel
