Messi isn't socially awkward. He has a language barrier and is just more introverted and focused on football. That's all it is. His level of intelligence in finding passes, identifying gaps that don't exist and telepathic understanding of high IQ plays in tight spaces, is beyond most others. He also continuously evolved his game. From not taking free kicks he's now one of the best in history. He knows how to remain injury free. He handles his businesses well. That clip where he awkwardly waits behind Di Maria, yep that happens to me all the time. Im not sure if hes autistic or not, but that makes no difference. Also getting hyperfocused during playing football is something i experience(although i am not like a good player). Even if someone says something to me, or even complements me, i do not even realise. i tend to realise that like 2-3 minutes later. Maybe thats just being passionate about the sport.

Regardless of whether Messi is autistic or not, here‘s a little about the condition itself: autism is a neurological disorder that causes your brain to develop in a different way. There are many different symptoms that characterize autism and help you detect it. Here are some I found that could potentially be a sign of Messi‘s autism:
    1. Being very sensitive, such as to bright light or the touch of skin. This can quickly lead to overstimulation.
    2. Engaging in repetitive behavior, also called stimming, which is soothing and provides comfort in stressful situations.
    3. Communication difficulties. Autistic people usually don’t have a problem with empathy, oftentimes they even experience too much of it. It’s the inability to express what they are feeling that causes misunderstandings. In the clip where Messi is laughing at/with a crying person, he probably doesn’t know how to express his facial expressions because they (potentially) don’t come naturally to him.
    4. Seeing the small in the big. Autistic people typically focus on the smaller details rather than the broader picture (see how this relates with being quickly overstimulated). They can hyper-fixate on things they are very passionate about (called “special interests”).
I believe that Messi portrays many of the symptoms discussed and I, as an autistic woman, can relate to many of these “awkward” interactions shown in this video.
Although I don’t think we should diagnose anybody with any condition purely from media content and while not being professionals, it makes me sad how many people are vehemently arguing against it. There’s nothing wrong with being autistic. In fact, some of the most impactful people that stomped on this planet were autistic. I think we should finally recognize the 3% of our population who are autistic and out of whom, the majority has above average IQ.
It’s concerning how the autistic community doesn’t have any role models in the media (shows like Rain Man and The Good Doctor, albeit entertaining, arguably haven’t helped the autistic community at all). But when autistic people emerge, like Eminem or in this case (potentially) Messi it is swept under the rug and tried to he proven wrong by many people.
Autistic people are normal and we are human. Therefore, it is totally normal to be able to relate to Messi if he’s on the spectrum. Being socially awkward is part of the human experience. It’s just that some humans struggle with overstimulation and recognizing or producing facial expressions, which are traits of autism.
Lots of love to Messi ❤

Messi has dedicated his whole life to fútbol. Probably why he’s socially awkward. People he’s never met worship him like a god why he probably feels awkward because I’m sure he doesn’t see himself the way others do. Understandable why he wants his old teammates with him in Inter Miami. He’s played with them for so long they probably just see him for who he is.

he's surely autistic, idk why people claiming he's not in the comments like its something bad (they dont want him to be called like that bc they think its an insult when its not) autitic people are tremendous great and have so many abilities that non-autistic people dont have, i've followed messi since he was young, and by his playstyle to his social skills, there's a significant amount of evidence that what we are seing is in fact the autistic spectrum, the way he sees football may be different to what others see, that explains so much, im saying this because i know 2 people who are on the spectrum and the abilities they have for particular stuff and the lack in others are impressive of course you can't tell just by looking at them (its almost unnoticiable, but the psychologist detected it), and its the same thing i see in messi when he plays or when he does something, people claiming he's just introvert are wrong (well maybe he's also introvert) idk, but as an introvert myself i dont act like that like yeah bro im pretty shy and sometimes i act weird but its not messi's case. I remember an old interview with his first coach (NAME OF THE INTERVIEW: Salvador Aparicio primer entrenador de Messi || #AnécdotasDel10) and he mentioned that messi had 0 knowledge about soccer (that's what his mom said) and his grandmother (messi's grandma rip) told messi's mom to let him play with the team, the mom accepted and the coach made him play, messi didnt touch the ball and he was just watching his teamates play, and after a long time that he took the ball and dribbled past anyone and score a crazy goal (goat), remember that he never been trained or played football before that day and he was also the youngest one in the field, the coach described it as something ''SUPERNATURAL'', that alone tells you everything.

My gosh… Messi is just a humble shy guy. Leave him alone. The world always finds something to frame someone or create a false narrative around them. When someone is great, they always look for something to put them down even when it isn’t true. Messi is simply a shy person who happens to be around cameras 24/7. How many of us do weird things and we don’t have any disorders, things that are much more weirder than him. The cameras pick up everything he does and the world wants to paint it as autism. Not saying autism doesn’t exist in the world but ya’ll are really looking for anything to downplay how great someone can be, and in this case how great Mess can be whilst being a normal shy guy.

For someone that does has Aspergers, I’ve played football since I was 7 and other sports, being the son of an athlete as well. Just like others, we have to train and learn to get better just like any other athlete has to do. Other former and current athletes are on the spectrum themselves, former hockey player Peter Forsberg is supposedly autistic (or so I’ve heard). It can help us on the field, most definitely, but in a social setting, it can be a struggle. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t have my short comings with engaging with others, but my obsessive interests don’t show any glimpse of slowing down.

I have ADHD and the part about people on the spectrum having bad motor skills is very true. I was never great at sports despite being tall, having my growth spurt early (13) and being naturally stronger than most kids, your reaction time is utter garbage compared to the average person and at the elite athlete level your reaction time has to be damn near super human or you will get destroyed. The weird thing is your eyes and brain can see something coming and react fast but if feels like your body is moving in slow motion, Messi doesn't have that problem. He is just introverted and a bit weird.

What, to me as a former non professional football player , puts Messi in the AS realm in terms of football skills is that a rough 50% of what he does on a pitch is actually not that difficult to do. Not even to an average professional football player. The difference between he and and a good yet average player is : HE JUST DOES IT where the others would try to find what they think is a better option. Messi sees a gap between 2 opponents, he pushes the ball into the gap then rushes after the ball. Opponents are out of his way. He doesn't need 10 square meters to dribble one opponent but he'd dribble two or three in 5 square meters because he is ahead of them. He's got the ability to see instantly where the escape route is between 2, 3 or 4 opponents and keeps and he pushes the ball into this direction at lightning speed. Its opponents always are too late. This is particularly visible with his "Maradonesque" goal against Getafe or the goal against Bayern when Boateng loses his balance and falls. Other players do that at times but Messi did it countless times. Almost every week no matter who was the opponent. That is to me what makes it a pattern. He masters the body language like what he dribbled Nanni. It's simple as that. One slight move to his left, Nanni follows the move, then Messi swiftly brings the ball to his right, runs and that's it, Nanni is incapacitated.
