    I do professional 1.3 and 1.4 on the side. I just want to say you always need to have people and flammable materials at least 150 to 200 ft away depending on the size of the firework. Do your research and make sure you have people far enough. Not to mention your racks or cakes should always be pointed away so if they do tip over they don't fire towards you guys. We have mistakes in professional fireworks as well but we take precautions just in case something like this does happen NO ONE GETS HURT %100 because that is above all priorities. That's professional but it applies for all fireworks someone could get hurt or worse. Have fun be safe!

      Absolutely agree and I learned important lessons from this show. I’m so thankful no one was injured. The boards are pointing away from the main crowd, but there was not enough distance to keep people out of harms way should something tip over. Thanks for your professional response. I posted this as a precautionary tale for others to learn from yet some people took the opportunity to throw shade. My shows will be less intense as a result of this accident and I’m imploring other safety precautions as well. Again, thank you for the nice comment 👍

      I heard a rule of thumb: 150 feet from ANY structure, for every inch of bore size. Therefore 3 inch tube=450 feet. I feel sorry for the porch pounders in the hood.

    Idk if you already started this, but you can taper over mortar tubes to help keep free sparks from fountains, mines, or other launch charges from lighting charges early. the firework wont have problems getting out if you use 1 layer, but this little layer can help stop sparks and keep fuse hopping to a minimum. The show looked great and I LOVE your fuse chaining, it all looks amazing and it shows that this was truly a onetime mistake that you learned from!

      @FastFixTH-cam thats fair with leaving open for clean up. Id say go in the middle. Cakes and stuff that are extra reliable, keep them open. But for can shells and top chained areas, tape over just to be safe. That way you have a balance between extra saftey and still keeping clean up lowish. :)

    Wow, that is crazy. I had the exact same thing happen to me, with an Excal tube tipping over. Mine just didn’t shoot into the rest of my racks. I had 3 stand alone right next to each other. The 3rd one tipped I think when the 2nd shell went off. I just missed hitting the neighbors boat. Won’t be using single tubes again that aren’t completely locked down. Glad no one got hurt, great show otherwise.

    Man that sucks, sorry that happened. I had something very similar and 100% avoidable and my fault. Had 2 sections of 3 tubes each 1 straight and then put one on each side so it would be at an angle (set the base of the angled one on the base of the straight one) and I glued them but forgot to go back and screw them down. When straight one went it knocked over both angled ones and luckily when the shell launched to the side it hit the fuse going to the first of 15 cakes so the show stopped. Pulled all the tubes out of that first cake then restarted and the rest went off without a hitch. Your situation could have been so much worse. Mine too but we learn from our mistakes and 1 thing I really took away from all if this is DISTANCE IS OUR FRIEND. Anyway good post man.

    • @FastFixYouTube
      @FastFixYouTube  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Wow, it’s just scary how close we are to disaster with fireworks. You’re 100% correct, distance is our friend. That’s something that I can only sort of control. At this point, distance will dictate what we can and can’t have in the show. Since there’s nothing we can do about distance, we must scale things down. I hate to do it, but safety is more important. I’m glad you had a “fortunate” mishap and the shell disrupted the other fuses. Geesh, could’ve been much worse as you said. I used to angle tubes the same way you did, but then started to make the racks which I thought were much safer…as they are. They’re just not impervious to ground explosions and will go rogue if damaged enough. I enjoy hand fusing, but I think we’re going to use an electronic system next time. That way if something does happen, we can stop the show in its tracks. Thanks for the nice comment. I appreciate the civility. Have a safe one! 👍

  • @ThatGuyyyyyyy

    Not sure if you considered this.. but if you're doing big shows like that. Consider a Cobra firing system. You can hook up MJG igniters and instant fire the whole show. Perfectly timed. The advantage is if you have a catastrophic failure, you can temporarily stop it before it gets worse. Much safer than basically lighting a 10 minute boom. Been using a cobra for years and I love it. I have 4 modules 72 cues.

    • @incrediblemichael
      @incrediblemichael ปีที่แล้ว

      dude even with the cobra firing system can that happen you always have a quickmatch or fuse hanging somwhere out of tubes or sticking out of cakes so not much worth such a comment

    • @ThatGuyyyyyyy
      @ThatGuyyyyyyy ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@incrediblemichael WhatI'm saying is once you light a pre-fused show that will literally run for 10-15 minutes unless you physically cut the fuse.. that can be a problem. I've been doing consumer and professional shows for 15 years. But what do I know right? And no you don't have just random "quickmatch and fuse" hanging everywhere. Unless your being lazy and sloppy. MGJ igniters or e-match, eliminate the need for 90% of visco fuse. You should also be covering your mortar racks with tape or tin foil to prevent fuse jumping. I'd bet on the safety of an ematch cobra display over a 20 yard long visco fuse display 10 times out of 10. At any time you can stop the display for safety reasons.

    This happened at my hometown firework show. Huge mortars were hitting cars and people and kids were running everywhere. It went on for about 20 minutes, fire trucks and police were everywhere. They managed to save a few and after about an hour they resumed with what fireworks were left. Im not sure if anyone was hurt. Im sure someone had to get hit. I’ve enjoyed fireworks with my family since I was a small boy. I passed my love of fireworks (on 4th of July only) on to my kids and grandkids. There is one major rule - SAFETY, SAFETY, and SAFETY!!! This starts and ends with LOCATION. You never setup and shoot off fireworks anywhere near homes or neighborhoods. I can’t believe you setup this fireworks display, especially considering the size, type and quantity, right across from a house in what appears to be a residential neighborhood. It’s negligent, it’s arrogant and it’s just plain stupid. Find a safe place - preferably a large empty parking lot or gravel covered field, get permission, notify the local authorities and have fun SAFELY. This was arrogant stupidity. I hope you learned your lesson.

    Beautifully designed show - shame it was ruined by the chaos! I'm in the process of retiring 'ye old milk crate racks' in favor of sturdy wooden ones. My primary concern is minimizing damage from a cato - although the wooden racks are heavier, more expensive, and hold much less pyro, they have the advantage of only having 10 shells loaded up in a row - so maximum of 10 loose fused tubes on a cato (milk crate rack has 25). Then, as the pro's do in the 1.3 world, foot boards and head boards are nailed onto each cluster of 2-3 10 shot racks to stabilize them. I've never had a cato myself, but your video and others like it have woken me up to the dangers of too much loose pyro too close to spectators.
    As for distance - it's clear that everyone watching is far too close, and that the product is too close to homes. However, the reality of the matter is that many neighborhoods in America are just as tight and feature just as much ordinance on any given 4th of July - just not all at once in an organized show. There has to be some reasonable discretion of when to bend the rules for fun... and when it is just not safe enough. I did some racks of mortar shells this year at a friend's neighborhood and it was great fun.. but made me nervous the whole time because of proximity.
    If only it was easier to gather neighbors to a nearby park or empty lot.
    Next on my bucket list: set of Cobra modules. Just have to find 6x my annual pyro budget lying around...

  • @JG-PyroTX

    2 more tips. Get out of tight neighborhoods. Everyone wants to get drunk and be at their house with these items in the street but there isn't enough room. If you can find a more open area say within 5 minutes walking it's worth it.
    But at least buy 2 sheets, if not 4 of 4x8 plywood and wall off your display. We lay them so they're 4 tall 8 wide and tight to at least front and back. Anything that can get over has much lower odds of head hunting

    You should have screwed the canister shells down to the board. Even with that your cakes are way too close together. It's common for cakes that fire to re-ignite and have a flame going post fire off. Wind can fan the flame and if other firework too close by will set off the others. When you do a show each year you learn more and more. Also even if using a Cobra system I wrap around the ignitors where the clip on. That way if a burning remnant firework falls down it doesn't spark the ignition fuse on another cake. I have you beat on the fire off. 3 years ago I use to go and light one at a time. Cobra had just came out with their Ignite system by cell phone. I wired everything up perfectly. Went to start the show of 100 plus 500 gram cakes and they all went off at once that lasted like 5 minutes on the 4th of July...lol What happened is Cobra had a software glitch where it told multiple wired modules to fire at once. Scott the owner of the Cobra company apologized. Their engineers found the error and corrected. To make up for it he gave me free Cobra professional grade case modules instead of Ignite for the next year. Those have been around for decades and have built in fail safes to not launch like that. Since you have that open area there you should get many more boards where you have great distance between the cakes. Good luck

      Regarding the dangers, of course fireworks are dangerous. Would I have sat that close? No and I wouldn’t have let my kids sit that close and the video is a perfect example. BTW - he got liability releases from the neighbors and so it was front and center that there is danger involved.

    This happens way too often. People want to light more than one tube at a time. And when one goes it knocks the other ones over. Lesson too be learned. Please share this info with anyone u can. Thanks for making the video. Even when in a rack these shells can be devastating. I had a plug blow out the bottom of a tube and blow in the 2x4 rack. Blew everything to splinters. Thank god it was a quick rack and all the shells were already in the air. Mind u this was a hand built strong 2x4 rack not a chintzy store bought one. It stood no chance. Neither did anything within a few feet of it. And that was a regular consumer grade shell. Nothing special

      Yes, you’re 100% correct. The wood racks and anything near them don’t stand a chance…even with consumer grade stuff as you mentioned. I once saw a guy put a consumer shell in a safe and it blew it completely apart. And it wasn’t a weak safe. The energy has to go somewhere and it goes fast. I appreciate the nice comment and for sharing your experience with a malfunction. Anything can happen and what I’ve learned most of all is to plan the show according to distance. So, this show will be scaled down considerably next year. Also, no last minute changes or use of anything that’s not securely fastened to the boards or the ground. Thanks again 👍

      @@pyrojunkie8350 you're correct that pointing items away is a good safety measure. But that only works if the show goes without issue. @scottsuhre2514 Bad stuff can happen during firework shows, and if you're concerned about that, you need to make sure you're far enough back if something like that occurs. In the professional world, we use electronical systems that we shut down the show with simply a push of a button.

      @@pyrojunkie8350 yep, when it comes to safety, distance is always your friend. And yes, I e-fire as well and can stop if needed. But, it's extremely rare to see someone connect an igniter individually, to each shell. Most often it's a 12, 20, 24, 36 shot rack with all shells fused together. Don’t think the spacing was the problem. I’ve seen shows with 5-10 times more fireworks and much more compact with the setup that went just fine. Sorry, you are dead wrong. There is little residual heat at ground level. Occasionally a cake will catch fire, basically cardboard burning, but there is never a transfer of enough heat that could detonate other shells/cakes. Only a defective tube, cake or improper setup, as in this video, could cause unwanted ignition. It's a shame this happened because the 'free standing' mortar tubes are the easiest to secure to a board with a few screws.

      As the others said below, heat was not the problem. Actually, heat by itself is not a viable source of ignition. Fuses and the flammable powders in the cakes and shells require a spark or flame to ignite. So unless we’re talking about heat that is greater than or equal to the heat required for spontaneous combustion (of fuse or powder) this was a setup error in relation to the free standing tubes.

    What, no sand bags? I thought that was just a stack showing what you had. Not how it was set up. Sand and spacing. You never know when some worker is going to double charge a rack. They blow out all the time. Get a cobra or other controller. You want to be a pro then act like it!

    • @FastFixYouTube
      @FastFixYouTube  ปีที่แล้ว

      I don’t want to be a pro as I stated. We did get a firing system and took extra safety precautions 👍

    • @Michael-rg7mx
      @Michael-rg7mx ปีที่แล้ว

      @FastFixTH-cam a dump truck load of sand fixes alot. Space things out more. Everything covered with foil. Light them by hand with a road flare. You can't have exposed fuses. But oh well, nobody was hurt. You didn't burn down a house.

  • @HomeGrownPyro1
    @HomeGrownPyro1 ปีที่แล้ว

    That’s the only downfall to fusing everything together is that you can’t shut it down once it’s started. I would recommend picking up some cobra firing modules and a remote. Or even a cheap Chinese firing system would work.

    • @FastFixYouTube
      @FastFixYouTube  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, this is so true. We like the “old school” model, but are very likely to use a firing system next time for safety. Spot on good sir!

    • @SeersantLoom
      @SeersantLoom ปีที่แล้ว

      Same here. I prefer using remote modules and electric matches. Much easier to spread things out and fire when needed. I usually remove external fuses from cakes and shove electric match directly into fuse hole. This way the cake will go off immediately and is possible to sync with something else.
      I've had too much misfortune and headache with exposed fuse lines, sometimes not lighting, sometimes getting ripped, sometimes catching fire etc.
      Also, bolt down everything that has even remote possibility of moving, not even speaking falling over. I usually build holding boxes around cakes and screw them into floor plate, on the ground I'll put spike to hold each edge and smaller cakes get additional tape wrapping.
      My mortar racks have holes in the legs, so I can nail them to the ground. Larger shells leave the barrel with quite a bit of kick, you don't want them to sit on anything weak.

    I use bricks with everything I shoot off, never wanna risk something tipping over. Always use bricks for cakes and canisters especially ! Safety first always.

    • @atmsk8r726

      @@FastFixTH-cam I hope you use bricks on every cake next year!! Or use super strong hot glue or gorilla glue for all the cakes, and single tubes if you decide to use those again. Cakes can tip over even when on a sheet of plywood, rather be safe than sorry!!! Just a future tip if you decide to do a board again next year, bricks all around 4 corners for support, and glue all the cakes down even the smaller ones with strong adhesive glue. 💯✅
