    I've been saying this a lot lately but the best way to incentivize going for wins rather than draws without increasing the amount of rounds it to decrease the amount of spots in top cut. Top 4 is the most obvious answer but you can also do something like top 10 with the top 2 being seeded automatically into finals and the remaining 8 players playing for the other 2 spots. This further incentivizes trying to win because getting a bye into finals is a huge deal.

      Yeah the top 10 setup seems really cool

    • @kevinsimmons5343

      This would definitely help with draws! The questions would just be to ask if it’s worth having fewer players feel good about how they played by limiting semifinalists.
      Due to the nature of 4-player, a top 16 cut is almost like a bandaid for scuffed losses tbh. I’d be very interested to see player feedback on a system like this.

    To stop draws you need to make ID worth 0 and the only way to get 1 point for a draw is if it actually goes to time. Offering draws over and over in game is bad sportsmanship imo.

    • @mindfreak314
      @mindfreak314 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If a pod wants to draw, they will then just pretend to play until time is reached.

    • @MK-13337
      @MK-13337 ปีที่แล้ว

      ID was made because people used to think about their mulligans for 50 minutes if they wanted to draw (in "normal" formats). There is no rule that says you have to play in a timely manner if your opponent doesn't call a judge. So if you say that a draw is worth 1 only if it goes to time instead of ID I will propose thinking about mulligans for however long the round timer is.

    you cant actually ever kill your own bowmaster token with bowmasters triggers because the damage and the adding a 1/1 happen as part of resolving the same trigger so state based effects arent checked until after its already got the new counter

    • @anthonyi8484
      @anthonyi8484 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not how that works. The card says “Then amass orcs 1” so that part of the effect happens after the damage. Similar to how cards like living death can work. So you can kill your bowmasters only when it is a 1/1, otherwise it won’t work

    • @williamwright3715
      @williamwright3715 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@anthonyi8484No, you can't. There's a quote that I like in situations like this: "Damage doesn't kill creatures, state-based-actions kill creatures." If you target your own 1/1 orc army token, what happens is that during the resolution of the effect: one damage is dealt to the army token, then you amass and place a second +1/+1 counter on it, then state-based actions check and see a 2/2 creature with 1 damage one it. This is similar-ish to what happens when you Bolt a 2/3 Tarmogoyf.

    If the issue is an entire pod just deciding to draw instead of playing, that is a simple solution. Just make a rule to prevent it and make it count as a drop if they do it. If it is a time issue, you might have to extend the timer on rounds or make pods play until there is a winner. In CEDH it should not increase the timer that drastically.

    • @mindfreak314
      @mindfreak314 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In cEDH extending the timer until there is a winner, is very much a drastic problem. It would add hours to already grueling long days.We had that in the past, where even giving each player a single additional turn after time is reached could add a hour or more to a round.

    • @scott898586
      @scott898586 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mindfreak314 With the power level of cards these days, I cannot see how it adds hours to already long games. Most CEDH games I watch last at most like 15 to 20 minutes. However, I do not play in CEDH tournaments, so that opinion is skewed. Extending the timer was not an idea isolated to the idea of forcing the game to play on until there is a winner. It was just a solution to try and help the unintentional draws. Allowing entire pods to just choose not to play it out and agree to a draw is the only real problem I see here if that is indeed what is happening. Most games have rules prohibiting this exact thing because of what it does to competitive events.

    • @mindfreak314
      @mindfreak314 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@scott898586 I play in tournaments and I'm also involved in organising them. I would love to let pods play it out, but that's not possible. Most games take way longer than 15-20 min. I don't know how you could possible get that impression. You can't prevent IDs, because if players want to ID, they will just pretend to play until time is reached. There are possible solutions that are currently explored, but it's a bit more complicated than "just don't allow it".

    • @scott898586
      @scott898586 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mindfreak314 What I am referring to is mostly just a pod or any players looking at each other and just agreeing to a draw and not playing at all. If players are going through a motion and you as a TO or even judge for the event see this behavior, you can call players into question as to why they intentionally did not play to win. It is usually pretty obvious assuming you could physically see what they have in hand, the board state, ect... The only way to de-incentivize intentional draws would be to punish them while finding a way to allow them space to play to win. Increasing rounds is the same as increasing the timer on rounds, but punishes the players doing well harder. Taking an additional rounds worth of time and dividing it among the rounds of the tournament may help a bit. However you will not stop IDs without some form of consequence.

    Regarding the drawing thing I think splitting the top cut so some get a by in the knockout stage and some need to play an extra round could work, would need to play around with the numbers though. But it would encourage people to go for wins by giving a real incentive.

  • @Skywarp2099
    @Skywarp2099 ปีที่แล้ว

    Set a point minimum in order to be considered for top 16 that's higher than what two wins would award, and reduce draw values so they award no points. I'm sure that would incentivize people to play their pods. If a player can't even be considered for top 16 on two wins, and there's no benefit in a draw, they better go earn their spot. Otherwise, the next best solution would be to require all pods play until a winner is declared or time expires, which would void the possibility of a mutual draw.

  • @quantumlandbooks4005

    Regarding the tournament cuts, I think it's really important to do multi-day tournaments. If it's a matter of TO time, I would not mind, tournaments being bi-monthly since more are popping up. Another benefit of this would be that players are less tired and likely to make mistake in late rounds and playoffs.

    This way all 5 rounds of swiss matter. People who win more that day are more likely to get top 16.

    I've talked to a couple of TO's as well about ID and I'm sure its been hashed out before but my tired brain thinking on it again wonders if you can somehow make the last 2-3 rounds worth 6-7 points a win instead to incentivize play? I feel like you really want to incentivize getting 3 wins to get into the top 16 and going 2-0 at the start and then drawing the last 3 games isn't as automatic as it currently feels.

  • @donaldtaylor724
    @donaldtaylor724 ปีที่แล้ว

    Did some napkin math, and came up with an idea for a top 40 cut that incentivizes top players playing it out
    10 pods
    1-4 seeds play in a separate pod. Winner gets a bye to the T4, losers get seeded into semifinal pods.
    4-40 snake seeded into 9 pods. Winner moves on, losers are done.
    Winners of the 4-40 pods and the top pod losers get seeded into 3 semifinal pods.
    EDIT - the crux of my idea is that players need a meaningful incentive to want to get a higher seed. If the juice isn’t worth the squeeze, you’re not going to change their behavior.

    They really need to change the draw concept for these tournaments because someone that just has a great start should still have to put in effort in later rounds. Me personally I think if a person loses the game (Damage, Final Fortune, or Spite Pact), it should count as a loss not a draw even with no clear cut winner. The Damage one may cause some controversy though. Another round is probably the key factor though but makes tournaments such a grind, it's a dilemma for sure
