- I finally built LEGO Architecture set 21042 Statue of Liberty and I made it to the step I was dreading...putting the face on. I knew the face consisted of one single Nexo Knight shield piece and was in my opinion, the worst part of this amazing set, but I also knew that JK Brickworks may have found the perfect solution. This is my attempt to fix my LEGO Statue of Liberty to make the face look better. Will it work? Watch to find out!

Person Man Autismo-boy I can see why some people might like the original as it has a much cleaner design but I do like the more realistic design more.
Unpopular opinion: the best solution would be to keep the original flat face, then stick a pair of googly eyes on it.

Modern problems require modern solutions.
This is one if these times where fans think the creators failed and they can improve the design, only to realize after hours of work that the creators already considered everything and the disliked thing is actually the best option. And then it gets ok again, and the creators get more respect for their genious.
I think you give the creators more credit than they deserve.

There's one online where someone used a T-shaped bar piece to make the brows and nose and that looked better than the official one. Or just a sticker or printed piece would've been better

The minimalistic design of the face makes the entire LEGO structure so magestic. I like it.

I feel like I’m the only one who saw that one piece face and was like “that’s genius, I love that” for exactly that reason. LEGO can’t make a face at that scale, it’ll look like a Neanderthal, and a sticker would be so so so tacky, I’m sorry, but for a set like this, that’d be terrible. The face plate is an elegant solution, and I think the designer went through probably 50 iterations of a brick built face to get there.
Its a statue of liberty made out of lego, we are beond tacky
I think it would be funny if they printed the regular, plain smiley face on it. Not sized up, but the same size it would be on the minifig head, except on that much larger face piece
I actually prefer the blank slate face. Sometimes less detail is more, I think any attempt at a realistic face will just look weird

the blank face is perfect. the set sits on my desk, and i use a dry erase marker and draw my own faces on it... usually how I feel about the state of the US at any given moment :)

I think the scale is too small to have any real detailed face look good so the completely blank face shield is the best option. Neck was definitely too long though.

that uses cheese slope pieces to give her a nose, brow, and chin looks much better. It's not especially detailed, but it does help suggest that she has a 3D face, especially at a distance.
That face piece should have been a custom brick that had a face.

Wouldn’t be surprised if Lego had 5 to 10 different options they were considering and the shield ended up being the best since it could look like an artistic choice.
The shield does have an art deco look to it....which fits the theme of the city, even if the statue predated it.
To be honest, at first I thought “Yes the flat face is bad!” Than after I see the changed face I immediately thought “Maybe the flat face isn’t that bad”

The only problem of the new face is this the bottom of the face don't have a curve so it makes you feels like a little awkward just like minecraft character, the detail was great!

Assuming all those parts are "sand green", how about part 15068, "Slope, Curved 2 x 2 x 2/3", assuming it comes with the set? (If it doesn't, bricklink does list that part in sand green color.) Mount it onto a 1x2 plate with the slope tapering downwards, just below the 1x2 slope serving as the forehead. Not perfect, but lends more sense of a face than the flat shield tile but is far less blocky than the solution you tried here. Or if you really want a tapered chin effect, use two of Wedge 2 x 1 x 2/3, one Left and one Right (parts 29120 and 29119 respectively). ...Maybe also use a flat 1x2 tile as the forehead, let the slope or wedges lend all the curvature.

I use the LEGO miniature hands as eyes & eyebrows and one of those little bucket handles as the mouth. They are tiny enough to be in ratio with the face so that the proportions are perfect for facial features. The head is restructured in a way to accommodate the new changes that are added to the build.
When it comes to designing actual statues like these in Lego, a common question I’m sure the builders are often asking themselves is, “How much detail is enough detail?’ I think that if the Lego Statue Of Liberty has broken shackles at the bottom of the statue and a molded flame at the top of her torch, she needs to have a molded Lego piece of her face. As for the fix for the face shown on the other website, it’s an improvement from the original part included with the set, but not a real solution.

Dark Psychopath Uh, yea it is, adding a new part to there catalogue can be difficult, designing the piece, coloring the piece, and making it cost effective is a lot for one not even mainstream set. And, if they used a really Detailed, hard to make face, the set would cost a bit more, so, I honestly think the shield is fine...

I like the face though, it works with the overall smooth simple detail aesthetic.
I don't the neanderthal face at all, and I think I'd really dislike a sticker. In fact, after seeing the neanderthal face, I absolutely love the normal face.

I actually got lucky and received 3 extra pieces (as well as the usual 1 x 1 replacements) so I can do some face changes without having to double back and remove other stuff from the set (one extra left, right, and center 1 x 2 slopes)

I feel like the new face definitely feels more fitting from a design standpoint. By that, I mean that the eye is no longer drawn to the lack of detail on the face plate compared to the gorgeous detail on the rest of the set. However, I do agree that the face also doesn’t suit her. Honestly, if I were designing this and I wanted to maintain the one-piece faceplate type of thing, I would have gotten a 3d render of her actual face, simplified it where needed, and used that as a piece unique to the set
That's exactly what I was thinking!
Kind of a good idea that you shared there but thinking about it from an economical perspective, I would have to disagree with that suggestion. Noting your idea of creating a unique piece just to satisfy the design for this set, I'd say that that's not feasible especially when LEGO would have to create another mold design for the sake of making it unique. For me, their choice of choosing a blank, flat piece seems like an artistically pleasant and economically feasible decision greatly made by the LEGO group..
