Burning pampas on Palm Sunday was a tradition in my little town in SE Pennsylvania. The firefighters in my family looked forward to the training.

In the US - we called watering in to remove air pockets: "mudding in," and water as we fill. For shrubs and trees.
    Love your wit+humor.

What I love is John's honesty about the hazards of planting Phygelius in a garden. I find the same with some of the older Japanese anemones, solidago, and Acanthus (Bear's breeches). But many of the books and suppliers don't tell you this. Definitely right plant, right place. And buyer beware.

Hi John, I don't know if you care but the stem with the tag on it will always die on roses. I don't know why this is but it's true every single time in my experience.

Northofagus antartica did grow in Antartica. Twas a dwarfish prostrate form though. We had two of the big ones, magnificent bastards, but increasing heat, humidity and drought killed them.

There is a rather tall weeping tree growing in the newly enlarged bed, would be kind enough to identify it for me. Thank you and regards.

We took them up and the person taking them up, with great difficulty, got paid in bamboo.
