      I'm happy you continue to study with me. Look at the grammar:
      1. BE + in need of
      We are in need of assistance. (A more formal way of saying, "We need help.")
      2. a need for
      There is a need for stronger organization. We see a need for complete restructuring.

    Ms. Jennifer, thank you for the very informative video. I have a nitpicky question:
    Is a vocative comma (un)necessary after "Hello" or "Hi" (e.g. "Hi, Dean" or "Hi Dean") in the greeting?

    • @Englishwithjennifer
      @Englishwithjennifer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In direct speech and forms of address, we should use a comma before the name of the person we're addressing:
      Here you go, sir.
      May I help you, ma'am?
      Hi, Mrs. Wilson. How are you today?
      Let's work together, everyone.
      However, in email we've dropped that comma and only use it after the full greeting:
      Hello Sally,
      Hi Sal,

    You have a nice cheerful color scheme in your house. It is a nice tone.
    Tone is also important in email and in all electronic communication. It is easy to upset the recipient even when that is not the intention. If I say something that sounds a bit critical, I always add "only kidding" just to reassure the reader that I am not being serious. In formal communication, all wording which can be easily confused should not appear at all. Contractions and slang wording shouldn't appear in such emails either.
    I actually make at least three of the mistakes mentioned quite often. I sometimes capitalize the subject, I don't always use paragraphs and I overuse boldface. In my defense, I do this to make my email stand out from others in an inbox and to highlight important points within an email.
    I also make myself one of the recipients just to reassure myself that the email has been sent. That is one of my many idiosyncrasies.
    Thanks for your great advice, Jennifer!.

    • @Englishwithjennifer
      @Englishwithjennifer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For wall colors, I generally go for soothing and/or warm colors.
      Actually, in the context of marketing, I've heard that all lowercase letters can catch attention in the subject heading. But for our purposes, I advise writers to use sentence case or title case.
      I'm guilty of long paragraphs, too. I actually, thought I could have created another paragraph in one or two of my models. As long as the whole message isn't written as one paragraph, then it's not so bad. No one likes dense writing.
      Thanks for watching the new lesson!

    • @stunninglad1
      @stunninglad1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Englishwithjennifer Yes, we all like our email titles and their content to stand out, but we need to avoid irritating the recipient. Long paragraphs should be avoided as the reader can lose interest with "chapter and verse" correspondence. Another important point to go along with tone and content is that the spelling and grammar.simply has to be correct.
      Super lesson!

    Mam, did you have lesson on subjunctive mood?
    Mam , I am confused between . We use base form in subjunctive mood .
    for example:
    I suggested that he be allowed.
    But why we used "were" after wish . because base form of was / were is also be . so ,why didn't we say
    I wish I be a prince .instead of I wish I were a prince .
    .

    • @Englishwithjennifer
      @Englishwithjennifer  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I address the subjunctive briefly in my playlist on conditionals. You're right that WERE is used in specific structures (If I were, I wish I were, It's high time you were...). With the causative verbs (suggest, demand, etc.), we use BE:
      I suggest you be kinder when making requests.
      I demand that you be fair in your decision.
      Etc.
      I'll give some thought to this. It would be a good topic for a new lesson. :)

    Hi, Jennifer! It's me.
    Can you tell me what's the difference between: mutter, murmur,and mumble?
    Thank you.

    • @Englishwithjennifer
      @Englishwithjennifer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mutter/mumble -- very similar. "Mutter" can be associated with complaining.
      Murmur can be more of a sound (the sound of voices) than words that are understandable. Like hearing voices from a distance. The murmur of voices.

    I know everyone needs the money. That's certainly true. But it hurt to see you of all people, in a live stream done by Preply. A company that exploits their "teachers" taking 100% of their hourly wage for "trial" classes. And then keeping a whopping 30% of their hourly rate and even daring to suggest you shouldn't charge more than 10/15 dollars an hour to start with, which of course is very advantageous for them, and also gives them some of the money you took for making that live. I know you don't have that problem, your sources of income are many. But please next time you get involved in something like this, at least find out what it is all about. You do have a reputation to take care of. You've done a great job since I can remember. But being a presenter in one of the companies that exploits teachers... well, I find it questionable to say the least.

    • @Englishwithjennifer
      @Englishwithjennifer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello. I am sorry if you had a negative experience with Preply. My participation in a single livestream was simply that -- participation in a one-time event. I did not receive any payment for that livestream. In fact, I rarely get paid for livestreams. It was also not an official endorsement of Preply. I have agreed to a number of interviews and Q&A sessions over the years. Such events are a way to stay accessible and possibly reach new learners who are not familiar with my work. Thank you for acknowledging that my reputation has been one built on solid principles. I feel my professional work and actions for the past twenty-five years should erase any questions about my integrity. Kind regards!

    • @stunninglad1
      @stunninglad1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Englishwithjennifer We discovered that livestreams are not a get-rich-quick scheme. They're more like a make-no-money-whatsoever scheme.
