@JCbackfire I'm going to echo rudysmith1552 and confirm accuracy of statement: While it's true you overcame a significant hurdle/obstacle in conquering the Reaper, there are two NG+ exclusive bosses that make the Reaper look like a tutorial fight; they are on a whole other level and it's not possible to "scrape by", you need to fine tune your personas and their builds to optimize them to their maximum potential. If you end up maxing all the confidants by game's end and filling compendium to near completion, I'm sure you'll recognize the potential powerhouses you have at your disposal.
I hate it so much, because it makes it so much harder to knock them down. You can put them to sleep and hit them with a Technical...and they're not guaranteed to be knocked down. BUT WHEN THE ENEMY DOES THAT TO US...
Remember cheezing this guy in the OG Persona 5 by waiting till a rainy day during flu season and he spawns with despair and takes himself out after 3 turns. Was so sad when they pulled that part out in Royal.
But they also added absurd shit like instakill combined with the fortune tellers ability to increase the amount of stuff you get from wealth or Fusion alarm rates and Jose's Buffs you're about even

Have to agree. The song I usually put on when fighting him is Axe to Grind from Strikers. The Reaper is intimidating, yes, but if you put on a song that makes it feel like it could be ANYONE's game and either side could back the other to the wall at a moment's notice, it makes it more fun.
This design is from Persona 3, and fittingly, he served the same purpose there- a deterrent against grinding on the same floor for too long. Of course, lore-wise, it's a bit of a mystery why he's still around after the events of 3, but it makes sense why he'd be roaming around Mementos, where the collective unconscious takes form- Humanity fears death, and he's basically a living scarecrow, in both design and gameplay function. I could gush more, but I'll end it by saying that those super-long-barreled revolvers better embody a modern reaper than a scythe. Kind of ironic that he's the opposite of Pale Rider, design-wise- he ditches the dark robes for a scarecrow's outfit, and trades in the farming tool for the current tool of death instead of the old tool of farming.

The earliest I managed to beat the Reaper was when Akechi joins the party. For some reason the Reaper is susceptible to Almighty, so I just had Joker and Akechi spam Megidola while having Makoto and Ryuji spam buffs and healing. Beating him there made me stupid overleveled, but I did get some of Akechi's skills that you wouldn’t unlock in a normal run which was cool.

Persona q2 battle theme is fire btw I was here for this stream But this fight would have been very different if he had no hominculus and if you didn’t dodge as much or the reaper spammed more insta kills Because with bad luck this fight can end you even at very high levels

I was honestly a little mad when I saw how stupid the reaper was, then I remembered I only ever fight him on Merciless. Also, an optimal reaper fight you want him to ambush you, and you want him to megidolan spam, which is a testament to how hard he can really be. Can’t wait to watch you fight the NG+ bosses, and good luck with the rest of the game!

That was actually a really good reaper run! Considering how underleveled you were In my run I was so afraid of running into the reaper that I cleared every floor fast as heck so he wouldn't spawn, by the time I beat him, I destroyed him with OP Personas 😭

Reaper gives 170k experience with all the EXP bonuses from Jose. if you have Max item findings, just running through each floor collecting all of those mini jailed items and flowers will get you tons of materials for crafting tools mainly treasure traps and Perma-pick for finding lots of treasure demons and opening chests. with all the gold bar marked items that you will get from Mementos, you will get loads of cash. Jose upgrade preference: Item > EXP > Money
I was playing p3r while watching your stream and when you defeated the reaper i got so hyped that i had decided to also beat the reaper... Only to remember that i was sevearly underleveld on merciless, I did not have a good time.
Without all the "easy mode" additions to Royal, you would have had no chance. The 3 showtime attacks took off half it's health and Joker being able to freely switch personas without worrying about weakness is just plain cheating
I wonder if JC has already check the explanation of each personas, like the story behind each monster and their origin cultures. To me that's also really fascinating, I enjoyed reading them!
the only area the reaper won't show up is the first section of mementos. any other floors are fine and sometimes you may even encounter it being there as a deviation for a floor. reaper also only shows up on a floor once. I did some tests and drive around the first section for almost an hour and it never showed and again once it did show I stayed on a floor to see if I could get it twice and nothing. also you can collect 999 flowers for Jose in mementos each trip but it won't go higher than that. also you should definitely try the twins fight and the other two optional bosses 👀
Once I saw you had ambushed the reaper I knew this was gonna be crazy. (Doing this allows the reaper to attack on your turn but letting the reaper attack you makes it attack only once per turn.)
The AI for the reaper is incredibly smart and is always able to counter you with your Characters weakness, and with the habit of using insta-kill moves as well, but the moment you put marakarn up he immediately changes to using only almighty for the rest of the fight, unless you have the ability to defende yourself from it, you’re better off just not using the magical shield, but hey in the original you can completely cheese the fight during flu season when your about to finish sae’s palace cause the reaper in the original ps3/ps4 release can get despair then die in 3 of it’s turns for an instant win just to farm XP which BTW is all the reaper is used for in P5 (original and royal). Oh BTW when you do finish the game, and decide to do new game+ on your own time, take the time to do the thieves den achievements as you can save scum alot of them (like the romances, just save before doing rank 9 get in a relationship then backtrack your save) the thieves den is a universal game save that is unaffected by current gameplay, and completing all thieves den awards gets you full access to free personas from the compendium as well as a accessory that hides you from enemies. So it’s worth it.
The key tl beating reaper is constantly buffing and debuffing. Multiple times. Stack em. Heat Riser your people or do some teamwide atk up or def up moves Use debilitate often on reaper. Or at least some atk down and def down moves Have one member of your team do nothing but buffs and debuffs And use concentrate before your magic moves
Want to know something that will probably make you upset? If you let Reaper ambush you and get the first strike, he only has one attack per turn instead of two, unless you down him in the fight. Yes, the Meta thing to do is give The Reaper the initiative. Known AI exploit loop for the Reaper: Reaper Ambush-> Madarame Jewel skill on Joker (immune to all but almighty)/Heal team-> Reaper Concentrates-> Team Guards-> Reaper Almighty->Buffing/Healing/Hurting Reaper->Reaper Concentrates->Loop Note: this ONLY works if you let The Reaper ambush you, otherwise it would be able to Concentrate and Cast on the same turn.
Me with reasonable understanding of persona mechanics and trying to defeat the reaper in high and reasonable level range on the first try (death) A newcomer who had a very bumpy and wonderful with the experience trying to defeat the repeater and survived many many many and many attacks and somehow made the reaper throw (alive to tell the tale) To be honest, i respect that reaper deletion. Keep up the good work!

The reaper AI really is something in the persona games. You can hyper abuse him to win at like level 1 in most of the games on max difficulty

Oh BTW when you do finish the game, and decide to do new game+ on your own time, take the time to do the thieves den achievements as you can save scum alot of them (like the romances, just save before doing rank 9 get in a relationship then backtrack your save) the thieves den is a universal game save that is unaffected by current gameplay, and completing all thieves den awards gets you full access to free personas from the compendium as well as a accessory that hides you from enemies. So it’s worth it.
Your Reaper was way more easier than what I fought, my Reaper kept spamming Concentrate and Megidoloan.
The key tl beating reaper is constantly buffing and debuffing. Multiple times. Stack em.
Heat Riser your people or do some teamwide atk up or def up moves
Use debilitate often on reaper. Or at least some atk down and def down moves
Have one member of your team do nothing but buffs and debuffs
And use concentrate before your magic moves
Want to know something that will probably make you upset? If you let Reaper ambush you and get the first strike, he only has one attack per turn instead of two, unless you down him in the fight.
Yes, the Meta thing to do is give The Reaper the initiative.
Known AI exploit loop for the Reaper:
Reaper Ambush-> Madarame Jewel skill on Joker (immune to all but almighty)/Heal team-> Reaper Concentrates-> Team Guards-> Reaper Almighty->Buffing/Healing/Hurting Reaper->Reaper Concentrates->Loop
Note: this ONLY works if you let The Reaper ambush you, otherwise it would be able to Concentrate and Cast on the same turn.

A newcomer who had a very bumpy and wonderful with the experience trying to defeat the repeater and survived many many many and many attacks and somehow made the reaper throw (alive to tell the tale)
