In this installment of my Prophet 5 restoration video series, I show you how to remove, test, rebuild & calibrate the power supply of your Sequential Circuits Prophet 5 synthesizer. We also stumble across evidence of a really good reason why you will want to do this to your Prophet 5.
excellent video, as always super informative. thanks!!!!
Nice work. Why keep those resistors though? They go out of spec as well over time in PSU applications, and there are only a handful.
Great video, exactly what I need! Thank you!
You may want to use a large resistor instead of needle nose pliers to discharge the capacitors...
HI i m french i need to changes all composants on the power supply, can you regive by screen ref for all composants??thanx by advences!!
Hi there, I have a kit with all the components you'd need to replace on the power supply. It's available on my website and I do ship to France. Thanks!
@@Synthchaser I JUST NEED THE RIGHT REF FOR THE CAPACITORS 15 V I GUESS AND REGULATORS!!
@@Synthchaser MANY THANX i need the rightblue trimmer that mess alzo on my power supply!!

Nice Video. i recaped my Prophet 5. But theres one point Iám not sure if everything is really right. If I measure the points like shown in the video i got the expected results. But there are two more measurepoint in the middle (-5 and +12) . If i measure these two I got -26V for the -5V point and +26V for the +12V measure point. So I am a little bit angry to connect the PSU to the board. Can anyone explain why i got these different values???
Rev 3.2 and 3.3 Prophet 5's don't use those two power rails, and they're not equipped with -5V and +12V regulators. So you'll see the unregulated voltages there, which doesn't matter since they're not used.
@@Synthchaser big thx for this hint. On the back the serial is 1000-5347 . Can you tell me which revision is this exactly
@@beatronomic1952 Look on the PCB 3 circuit board, it will tell you.
@@Synthchaser OMG i really oversaw the big letters on the PCB board :o))) Its revision 3.2 with midi mod. BTW it´s very nice that you made this restauration series about the prophet 5. It´s so helpful for me cause I am not a pro like you. I hope i was lucky too and it works after recaping all the capacitors...But than comes the hard thing...calibration...
So why did you replace the diodes? I wasn't aware they had much of a lifespan.
They dissipate tons of heat and are a frequent failure point. A new diode that hasn't had a 35 year life of being burning hot will likely last longer than the existing part.
Are there any circumstances where you would choose to install new tants instead of electrolythics?
Not that I can think of offhand.
How does a person with absolutely no technical knowledge or schooling in electronics/ engineering learn how to do this? Like what type of schooling or education is needed ?
It really only takes a basic understanding of electronics to be able to troubleshoot and repair this type of electronics. TH-cam videos, web pages, used textbooks, etc are good resources to learn. From what I can tell, most of the techs in business today don't have an engineering education or background.
@@Synthchaser right on, thank you! I love watching this stuff, I barely understand but it’s interesting as heck to see what goes on under the hood
your channel is a huge knowledge supply!
I can't find the PSU kit on your website. Is it no longer available? Thanks for the video.

Thanks!
@@Synthchaser Thank you. Mine is a rev2 though.
@@JimAlfredson I have a Rev 2 here, when I get around to working on it I'll put together a kit. Check back on my site from time to time.
@@Synthchaser I am restoring a rev2 I'm calling the Swamp Prophet. You should see the pics. It's pretty insane. The potentiometers look like they were at the bottom of Lake Michigan for 30 years.
Finally Part 2! Are you going to make a video about the restoration of the keybed? Is this prophet going to be for sale on your website? Keep up the good work!
Thanks! Yes, I'm planning on showing the whole process. And yes, I will be selling this Prophet when I'm done.
Crazy question: could you make me a power supply kit for the prophet 10?
Next time I have a Prophet 10 here I'll make a kit.
YAYYY!
