Restoring TWO Sequential Circuits Prophet 10 synths and stacking them with MIDI (40 Oscillators)!

  • The techs at Bell Tone Synth Works vintage synth repair workshop recently restored TWO amazing Sequential Circuits Prophet 10s and since we also retrofitted both with MIDI, we decided to chain them together to create a 20-voice, 40-oscillator monster polysynth! Here's an overview of what goes into restoring one of them, and a demonstration of the "Prophet 20" in action, also featuring our lovely Hawk HE-2150 stereo tape echo. This is like playing FOUR Prophet 5s at the same time!
    Sound demonstration starts at 6:42
    (in case you don't care about the "tech stuff")
    Bell Tone Synth Works is an electronic musical instrument repair workshop in Philadelphia, PA specializing in restoration and repair of vintage synthesizers and organs. Please email us with synth restoration inquiries at belltonesynthworks@gmail.com.

    I worked at SCI from 1978 to 1987, this was a trip down memory lane! I built, tested, tuned and repaired quite a few P10's.
    Compared to SMT electronics in use today, these were a lot easier to work on - you can actually see the components!
    Now I solder under a microscope down to 0201 size components. (smaller than a grain of sand).

Your mention of Curtis chips got me reading a bit about them and made me notice how similar some Prophet sounds are to Oberheim OB-Xa and probably other users of those chips. As a complete amateur I'm happy with soft synths triggered from a controller with knobs because they fit my music-gear budget but I really admire vintage hardware. Thanks for demonstrating those sounds which got me to crank my speakers up.

Was very disappointed that Sequential didn’t make the new Prophet 10 more like this. Would have bought one. They missed the entire idea of being able to play two distinct sounds on two key beds. Even putting out a limited edition of this synth would be awesome.

      I started studying electronics about 10 years ago specifically so that I could build and fix synths, and eventually learned enough and gained enough experience that I was able to turn it into a business. A lot of what we do is based on the same analog electronics theory and very outdated computer theory that someone would learn to be able to fix any other electronic equipment from the same era. The things that are hardest to deal with are things that theory can't help us with, like weird mechanical aspects of the designs and botched repairs by past techs!

      I assume she uses a vacuum operated, pistol type solder-sucker with separate vacuum pump, like a Hakko or similar. I was an audio repair tech for a number of years; the Hakko desoldering guns at the shop were getting finicky and parts are difficult to find, so we switched my bench rig to a relatively inexpensive "AOYUE" (pronounced Eh-You) desoldering pump, which actually works very well. The pistols or guns are a bit cheesy, but they're very inexpensive, so buy a couple extras (easier to swap out the entire gun than changing the heater core). Their newer-style desoldering tips with a pipe-nipple or tit on the end are long-lasting and work well. Model number is " Int-701a++ " if I remember correctly. It includes a pencil-type soldering iron as well. Unlike our aging Hakko units, I've not had to do any repairs to the vacuum pump after 5 years of daily use. The solder collection chamber/ filter works best with steel wool and a felt filter, like the old Hakkos used, as the sponge filter and springy solder collector provided with the AOYUE unit don't work very well .

    Two synths created by the guy that created midi now retrofitted with midi, he forgot ! But, the new stuff has it all in that updates of decades. Pretty cool stuff, but I'm sure a monster of a tediously rework...although I do think you don't actually find it tedious but enjoy it. So is it prophet 20 now? Hit the volume, beef it up like the old Maxwell tape commercial of sound blast...also nice playing.

      The Prophet 10 is actually from before MIDI was introduced, but rest assured, Dave Smith released MIDI retrofit boards for his past synths, including the Prophet 5 and 10, once the protocol was completed! The MIDI board we used that we got from our friends at @RosenSound is actually a copy of the original SCI Prophet MIDI retrofit board.

      @@BellToneSynthWorks Cool, I figured some of his synths were before his midi intro. It was some history I learned some years ago about competing synths and he being the zen guy ( notice of the buddha imprint within some of his synths) wanted a communication interface among them all, or " let's all get along intro interface" keep it zen man...but of course, it also means a good reason to buy more & establish control change to other modifications good times; synth comprise work parties? I did not know about that he already introduced retrofit for his older models, and keeping it vintage you got the original stuff! That's pretty neat

    Great video..i have same situation with my P10.. i need info on (R3047) resistor value in +15V supply line board 3..mine burning too, can't identify the value.

    • @BellToneSynthWorks
      @BellToneSynthWorks  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The one that had the really bad meltdown came into the shop first and when we had to replace the resistor it had already burned to the point that we couldn't read the lines, I just guessed based on similar applications of resistors I'd seen and put in... I think... 100 ohms? and it was fine. I think then when the other one came in where that resistor was still OK, it had 120 ohms there. However, I could be remembering wrong, but at the same time, I know the value isn't terribly critical. It WILL continue burning in any case until you fix whatever is drawing too much current through it. Look at what ICs are connected to the 15V supply that's separated from the main rail by that resistor, it's gotta be one (or more) of those. You can remove ICs and/or cut traces to narrow down which one(s) it is.

    Absolutely amazing work and a magnificent video - thank you. I've just received my restored and (Winecountrysequential MIDI-fied) Prophet 10 back from Kent Spong. Owner of two T8s too. Passed through some chorus and a modern reverb, they are all immense.
