    Since so many say the 40 S&W has too much recoil know that I read a story about a professional shooter who used a simple exercise to strengthen his fingers, hand, wrist and forearm so that he now controls just about any handgun's recoil with ease. He merely used a big baseball bat. He held it at arms length, pointed it at the ground, then using only his wrist, he lifted it straight up going slightly past his shoulder level, then slowly pointed it back at the ground. Repeat 10 times and do it 10 times a day. Anyone adult can do this and make even a little progress so that recoil from the 40S&W is no longer a reason why not to use it. I have tried it myself and even at age 73 I found it does indeed help in shooting a handgun. Once the recoil problem is no longer a problem then the effectiveness shown by you is a valid reason to use the 40 S&W. Good show! Keep them coming.

    The Starfire bullet was designed by Tom Burczynski, the fellow who created the Hydra-Shok. Both designs work on hydraulic principles; the post in the Hydra-Shok forces fluids against the inside of the hollow cavity and initiate expansion, and the Starfire uses a fluted hollow cavity which causes the fluids to act like a series of wedges, opening up the bullet.

      @@Rubeless I think doctors would agree that more damage is worse, and for any given bullet design the hotter the round the worse the damage will be. This is especially important when you miss a vital spot by 1/4 of an inch. The likelihood of affecting the heart, lung, or spine even if you miss slightly is more likely with the more powerful round. I think the empirical data around the superiority of the 357 magnum when it comes to one shot stops supports this. The ballistics of hot 10mm and 357 Sig today are similar or superior to the "duty" 357 magnums that were being used by police back in the day. The 40S&W and 357 Sig were born because of the ineffectiveness of 9mm and 38 Special during the Miami Dade Shootout. After the shootout, the FBI tried to move to 10mm, but the recoil was too much, which led to the development of the 40S&W. Just based on stories, the 40S&W has a good reputation for being effective, but I suspect the recoil was still too much for a lot of people. 40S&W is noticeably snappier than 9mm. Until recently, the Secret Service and Air Marshals used 357 Sigs, although they have since gone to 9mm. However, I believe the primary reason for the move back to 9mm is mostly because of cost. I think the whole newer more effective bullet design is BS, which is why smart cops grab rifles if they think they are going to be shot at.

    I have one of the first 2.0 40s on market. I have run a few thousand rounds of factory, reman, handloads of 40, 357 Sig(barrel) & a 9mm conversion barrel. The only malfunction has been a failure to feed with a 9mm(Stormlake conversion barrel) and I wasn't shooting. Actually a gentleman with RA was. We shoot up here in Northwoods Lake Michigan & Lake Superior area of UP & Northern WI year round. I have had my guns out & on range in single digits a decent amount. My 1.0 40c had a couple failures to feed & was a bit sluggish a few times when I first bought it in fall 2014. It was around 10 degrees when I put the first box through it when I experienced these issues. I haven't had any issues since. My teen & young adult daughters have shot this 1.0 quite a bit also with no issues. M&P 40s have proven very reliable for me. Federal for the win in this demo but brother that Cor-bon is hot. Thank you Dan for donating ammo.

    I think a hot 165 at 1150 plus is the best and then 180 at 1000 , but the forty can deliver ferocious energy in the lighter bullets and many different weights would also be a good choice, the 40 is superior to the old stale 9mm and those are just the facts.

    • @GunSam
      @GunSam  ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Yes, always has been ballistically great. But the public perception of it is not great. They will either take information from 30 years ago with some older gen 2 or gen 1 Glocks cracking frames and claim it's no good, or they will claim that it's 10mm Short and Weak so it's worthless. Then you got the guys who claim modern 9mm is (arm swing) just as good. There may be small elements of truth but none of those ideas are true overall, and currently. The fact is the .40 S&W was one of the best man stoppers of the 20th century and still is, if people who carry could just see that and stop listening to trolls...it could be great again in the public eye.

    .40 S&W continues to be the solution for the 9mm limitations, and it doesn't require any special up-pressure or millions of dollars in metal/copper/polymer R&D.
    It's sort of like trying to build a 4-cylinder engine to extract every last mile out of a drop of petrol with turbos, electric motors, superchargers, tons of computer programs..... or you could just scrap all of that and use a simple V8.

    • @GunSam
      @GunSam  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes. Many people go on and on about 10mm, but that's the next size pistol frame, and then you have to also lower the 10mm power to a .40 S&W level to be practical for self defense. Well the .40 S&W already possesses those modifications lol

    The only real issue with the 40 S&W IMO is the recoil and it impacts shot placement which is the most critical aspect in a shooting. The 9mm surpasses the 40 in popularity for 2 reasons, it recoils less making it easier to hit with. (a critical consideration) and it's less expensive that 40 in both practice and carry ammo. I personally like the 40 but carry the 9mm for the reasons already listed. I shoot it better and it's less expensive so I practice more.

    I have never found a good explanation of how much energy it takes to expand a bullet 1.5 diameter.
    Locally in Cincinnati it took (1) magazine to stop a target by a LEO. Caliber does not matter. They shot until empty when they carried 40 caliber. Now they carry 9mm and shoot far less than a magazine.

    I personally believe the .40 is amazing in full size duty pistols but suck in small pistols like the shield. 9mm appears to be lacking in duty firearms but do excellent in small conceal carry handguns. 380 has a 1 or 2 rounds required on average to stop an attacker and so does 40 but 9mm has a 2-3 and I believe that is because 9mm is being used as duty at further ranges than should be used.

      Probably Gold Dot and HST both in 165 gr. This more or less is like the stopping power of .357 Magnum, always expansion and pretty good penetration. If I was woods walking and also in the city, the 180 gr would be a better compromise.

      Why 180 in the city? And what about barrier penetration like through a windshield or car door Ect , part of the reason I like 40 is it’s ability to still have great Penetration through barriers where 9mm seems to fall very short? Also carrying a Glock 23 but do sometimes a 27 and also a 22

    I have the barrel to switch my Glock 32c from 357Sig to .40 Cal. I don't feel undergunned with either one!

    40 has much better street results with 155 and 165 grain

    I've NEVER seen a Starfire expand in ANY caliber, in ANYmedium.. Nice design, but I think the velocity is to low, jacket too stiff, lead too hard, or a combination of all three. Or the jacket may need skives.

    When was 40 S&W not a great cartridge? I mean, it's not a 10mm but 38 Special is not a .357 Mag either but that doesn't mean it's not a great cartridge. Can't we all just get along? lol lol lol Rodney King's legacy... POS
