Thanks for the walk through. Two months ago, I replaced the starter in my daughter's 2002 Camry LE, while it was parked in her high school parking lot. Today, I was semi-blessed in that my 2006 Sienna starter failed while my Sienna was parked in my garage and not in a Walmart parking lot or my workplace parking. This job was similar to my daughters '02 Camry starter replacement accept there were more connectors to undo and re-connect and also a transmission sensor to avoid damaging. Your video helped me to see what stages of the repair I needed to be cautious about. I'm glad I was not over-confident, after doing my daughter's starter but, instead I referred to your video to avoid marching foreword in ignorance. Thanks.
I just replaced a new engine starter for my 2004 Sienna XLE AWD after learning detailing steps in this video. I really appreciated this examplary video. Specially, my mechanic was busy these days and I might need to wait for a week and pay lots of money for the starter problem.
Saved me a ton of time, hassle, and money. Watched this video twice and knew exactly what I was doing as I started the job. I did the whole thing in just under an hour and it worked great! Thank you!!
After correctly diagnosing that the starter was bad, it took me 2 hours from removing the old starter, buying the new one and installing it. I had no power tools. Thank you so much for the clarity and step by step instructions!
That was a very comprehensive end detailed video. I've worked on cars all my life but usually American V8 s. I didn't even know where to look for the starter on this car. I watched your video twice and then went out and did the job for my daughter's college car. Thanks
This saved me about three hours of hunting for each bolt and connector. Did the job in 2 hours and that included the trip to auto zone for the replacement part. Thank you.
I just finished replacing the starter in my old dependable 2004 Toyota Sienna... Yaay! When it first quit working I thought it would be a nightmare to replace. Not so! It was a breeze. Thank you for your 'how to' video. I also appreciate you telling us the socket size as you walked us through... I didn't have to "try" 3 different ones on each bolt head! lol.!
Many thanks for sharing your expertise with those of us that are "mechanically challenged." As others have pointed out, the video is excellent - a very concise, informative walk-through.
This video helped me a lot. So I am obliged to add my input hoping to help even more people. Disconnecting the battery for this long will reset your ECU to factory. If you come across an idle issues. Specifically a low idle/engine dying. CLEAN THE THROTTLE BODY/BUTTERFLY PLATE.
Many thanks for this super helpful and easy DIY tutorial video, my wife was about to get my kids from school and she tried to crank my 2006 sienna it wouldn't start and guess what it was the starter, I watched many videos but this one by far easy step by step and clear view one ,again many thaks and GOD BLESS YOU.
The bare copper wire from the solenoid to the motor had corroded away. They could easily cover it with insulation but then they wouldn’t sell as many starters!
Thank you Brian, I did the same following your instructions and all went like a charm. I did a 15min drive after to settle the vacuum and alternator since my engine was running slow immediately after the replacement.
Although you didn’t mention it I like that you cleaned up the battery tray before reinstalling. A lot of people wouldn’t since they know no one will see it.
My very first time under the hood (other than swapping out a car battery) and your video eased the anxiety of the very complicated-looking setup that's in the way of the starter motor. Your step-by-step instructions helped me save so much money and time and the confidence I could do this. Thank you!!
Very good video for beginners never over tighten with brute force 10,12, 14 mm nuts/bolts. Very important that you use a Denso starter quality second to none. My 03 Sienna will get a new starter today and my 95 JDM Toyota HiAce camper van runs like new. Nothing beats a Toyota and the OEM parts they use 🤟
Brian. Thanks. Just replaced my starter (2005 Sienna) after watching your video. Your steps and explanation worked perfectly. Do you have videos on how to diagnose common car problems?
Thanks for your excellent video and I replaced my 2006 Sienna Starter and works well. But when I driving the car, I can feel the car is not as smooth as before, some shaking feeling. Would you please know the possible reason? Thanks
I like how you gave the tip about making sure you put the hose clamp where you could get to it to tighten it when installing back on. I definitely would have been the idiot to not think about that till it was too late.
Sure glad my 99 sienna 3.0 was nothing like that. super easy. Just remove the battery and unbolt the cruise control and push it out of the way. Air box was not in the way at all. My battery and starter both went bad the same day. The chances of that. Thanks. 😀
Thanks Brian for a well done video. I managed to get down to the point where I had successfully removed the 2 bolts holding the starter motor to the bell housing. But I could not get the starter motor front flange/pinion gear assembly to break free from the bell housing. I tried hammering the tip of a thin bladed screwdriver into the seam between the front flange and the bell housing, without success. I tried hitting down on the rear end of the motor yoke assembly (where the carbon brushes are located), without success. I tried levering a crowbar under the same rear end of the starter motor and prying up from the transmission housing, but no success. This is an 18 year old Sienna, located in eastern Canada and it is -20 F outside, so it is hard for me to work. The seam is now soaking overnight in PL100 spray. In your video, your motor just pops off. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Update. As I was able to determine that my solenoid was able to extend the bendix pinion gear when current passed through the solenoid, so I concluded that my only problem was that the heavy gauge braided copper wire running from the solenoid to the motor was broken in two. Fortunately I was able to unbolt the motor yoke assembly and take the motor apart and install a new set of brushes which came with a new braided copper cable ($15). So in the end, I didn't have to disconnect the bendix gear assembly frozen to the bell housing. If it had been necessary to separate the frozen parts, then I would have made a tool from a flat plate of steel with 4 holes drilled in it (2 threaded and 2 unthreaded) and I would have taken advantage of the existing 4 holes on the front flange (2 threaded and 2 unthreaded) in order to insert into this plate properly sized bolts in a manner to pull one frozen part away from the other, much in the same way that so called "jackoff" bolts are used to pull off a brake rotor when stuck to a wheel hub.
That feeling when the air snorkel bolt is rusted and the head comes off so you have to drill it out and use a pop rivet when you put it all back together
caution: so my son and i pulled a starter from the junk yard and tried to install i would not go in. Took back go another same thing: Solution: use a belt sander and sand around the starter a tad and the inside of the housing if groved. after several attempts...................viola!
I have an 2006 Toyota Sienna Le 3.3l v6 that im currently replacing the starter. It's NOT that easy like in the video STUCK. I now have to piece by little piece.
My van wont start after driving it, battery is good since its brand new. I guessing its starter but not 100% and dont want to throw parts at it if im not 100% sure what the problem is.
It looks like there been so many owners of the Toyota Sienna Starter problems. I purchased one not to long ago like in the year 2016 or 2017 and right after I purchased it from a car dealer lot the starter failed the next day. I had to purchase a starter and pay for a tow truck so it can be towed all the way to my house. I called the dealership where i purchased it they didn't want to pay for the tow truck even if it was towed to their own shop and since the incident happened to almost closing time on their end it was going to be to late. Anyways, i purchased the starter and my dad put it on the Van. I called the dealer and told them that I had already purchased the starter and they told me to bring in the receipt and they Will refund me the money for what i expend. Anyways, Is anyone having problems with the Stick that it can be switched gear from P to Reverse without stepping on the break or having the car engine on?
This aint that hard guys. Tools at Harborfreight are cheap. Just need a set of sockets $13, extensions for your ratchet $8 , and an extendable ratchet $14. Yall can do it! I’m just here getting a refresher because I need to do it again! 😂.
One thing that turn a wrench is a so called mechanic that does not know what size fasteners he's working on! You keep on referring to the 6mm hex screws as 10mm bolts. Really! If you go back and check you were using a 10mm socket/wrench to remove a 6mm fastener that has a 10mm head. So don't say your removing a 10mm bolt for the newbie's out there. They may not have any wrenches to start their project then go down the their local hardware dealer and buy a 10mm socket/wrench and what do you think they would fell like when they go to use their new purchased tools to start their job. Someone's going to be pissed off! Just say'n . Other than that you did a great job on the replacement procedure!
Probably the best tutorial ive ever seen. Clear, specific, to the point, and no fluff. Thanks.
Thank you!

This video is highly similar to my 2002 Camry SE. almost identical and easy to do, even with handtools

Im not a mechanic, i know very basic stuff and i just used this video and save a bunch of money.. thank you so much sir 🙏🙏🙏🙏

Your video was almost 100% identical to my engine which made the job easy to follow and straightforward to do. Thanks a ton.

Thanks for the great tutorial. Just finished replacing the starter on our 216K mile Sienna, and it went just fine.
The bare copper wire from the solenoid to the motor had corroded away. They could easily cover it with insulation but then they wouldn’t sell as many starters!
This was ONE GREAT, DETAILED, WELL SEEN starter tutorial. Thank you so much! I just saved $100.00.
Glad the video helped you save. Thank you for watching!
Excellent! Thank you! I just replaced ours. My poor wife got stuck and had to be towed. It's all good now!
Thank you, just did it. Repair and replace took about 30 minutes
This was a lifesaver. Thanks for the TH-cam Wd are computer guys but with your help we were mechanics for an afternoon
Just followed your instructions. Success! Great just-in-time training. Thank you!
Thank you Brian, I did the same following your instructions and all went like a charm. I did a 15min drive after to settle the vacuum and alternator since my engine was running slow immediately after the replacement.

You made it look so easy to do it, I know it's going to take me about 4 times longer to do mine.
Thanks.
Although you didn’t mention it I like that you cleaned up the battery tray before reinstalling. A lot of people wouldn’t since they know no one will see it.
I was like wow he took the time to clean the battery tray
absolutely the best. the other video from someone else didn't cover the battery cable part.
By far the vegetarian review and educational video besides going to school to do this just guy is a BEAST!!!!! GREAT WORK BROTHA!!
Great detail! Thank You Sir! Have a good day. stay hydrated and safe!
Great tutorial. I used this for my 3.3l Toyota Highlander. Everything is the same except there is no air snorkel or bar.
This guy is awesome. Very helpful. Helped me do my thermostat. Thank you and God bless

I really appreciate this video it made my starter replacement go smoothly and im no car guy. Well maybe now I am lol.

My good friend mechanic just quoted $550 for the starter replacement, sienna 2006 ..what do you think is he ripping me off?
That's a job well done.

Do you need a torque wrench for tightening the starter? or can I just do it with the normal tool? Just bc I don't have one
You’ll be fine doing it by hand without a torque wrench
Do you guys use OEM parts only or you use parts from auto parts store on your customers’ cars?
26 Ft-Lbs torque.... THANKS!
Thank you
I replaced starter , when I turned on it began smoking lightly, is that normal?
Thank you just I want know model LA OR CE SAME stater or defendant. Or 2 defendant stater

Ridhwan Ta-rer it’s hard to say without seeing it. Worst case scenario is you may have to pull the transmission.
who has the best replacement starter?
I just did this but car is idling really rough now and wanting to shut off

Seems like a pretty basic one compared to some other toyota engines.

All that for a starter. But some imports are worse than others
