    You’re cruising down the highway when all of a sudden endless rows of brake lights appear ahead. There’s no accident, no stoplight, no change in speed limit, or narrowing of the road. So why is there so much traffic? It's due to a phenomenon called a phantom traffic jam. Benjamin Seibold explains why it happens and how we might prevent it in the future.
    Lesson by Benjamin Seibold, directed by Cris Wiegandt.

      This is a big issue in countries like Germany, where there is a lot of traffic. Especially when they travel to Italy Greece or Croatia. They just speed up and break, speed up and break. Moreover the digital sign warns us of a traffic jam and to drive slowly. Once it told us to drive 60kmh but no, you could speed up to 100+ only then after a curve you see cars literally standing and till we humans react and speed up it creates the traffic jam. Also not only there but in Croatia for example where the driving license doesn't need much teaching so all sorts of dumbheads drive. So many ppl too slow on the left lane....

  • @mr.johnson3844
    @mr.johnson3844 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I read up on this in the past and now I apply this knowledge during traffic jams. In grid-lock, I don't touch the accelerator at all -- I simply idle forward, and only when I have 15 - 30 meters in front of me. If my idle speed is sufficient for a good 10 - 30 seconds, and the traffic in front of me is gaining distance, I increase my speed by about 10 mph. I apply that same logic until I'm back up to speed; if my current speed is sufficient for 10 - 30 seconds, and the traffic in front is gaining, I increase my speed by 10 mph. The important part is to avoid touching the brakes as much as possible, never change lanes, and only increase your speed.
    Unfortunately this tactic causes a lot of angry drivers behind me and a lot of superfluous merging into my lane while there is a gap, but I really do feel as though I'm improving the flow of traffic. The change is noticeable. At least, it seems noticeable and less frustrating.

    In my observations from traveling in and out of Boston 5-6 days a week, I find that the biggest contributors to traffic are sunrise/sunset being in the direction of travel, curves even in a highway can grind traffic to a halt for literally no reason, and people seem to be completely unaware of where their exits are and tend to try to exit right from the left or middle lanes.
    Edit: Also, unnecessary braking. Not enough people realize that merely taking your foot off the gas will also slow you down, especially uphill. Brakes aren't necessary in a lot of instances of small speed adjustments.

    I've been trying to tell people this for so long! While in traffic focus on the car in front of the car in front of you and slow down according to that one to try to reduce the stop and go traffic cuz you ease into your stops better. I also try to coast as much as I can so I can catch up to the car in front of me around the time that it starts moving again meaning that I never stop, I just drive at a constant but slower speed than the stop-go cars hopefully causing the cars behind me to not have to stop at all or at least less. I call it anti-traffic driving and I've been doing it for at least a decade or more. It doesn't help me get anywhere faster but it does make the drive more interesting and most importantly it hopefully helps everyone behind me. I just wish it would catch on more.
