Last time I rode in seriously windy / dusty conditions was on I-10 between Lordsburg, NM and Benson, AZ on a solo trip to Tombstone a few years ago. That area is notorious for high winds and dust storms. For 90 miles, that’s exactly what I had. In some spots, the winds were 50mph sustained. That, along with the cold March weather and myriad of big-rigs made that day quite the adventure. I couldn’t wait to get off the interstate. On a side point, I was riding my Harley Electra Glide.

Probably too late for this but to get the reamer in you need to follow the channel that the nail etc made going in. You need to angle the reamer back and forth till you feel where it goes in. Hope this helps someone.

Glad to see you out riding & not just adding farkle. 👍 ...You don't get tomorrow back & you can't buy a minute!... Picked my new Goldwing up in February 2020 with 3 miles on her.....She is approaching. 11,000 miles on the odometer as of mid June 2020.

Got caught in a 35mph side wind with 45 mph gust between Amarillo Tx and OK City on I-40, it sucked, but when you are 1000 miles from home you live with it. I know you like you're sticky rope plugs, but I have found them to be a pain in many ways. I switched to the STOP & GO repair kit ( kit has plugs and compressor aprox $65 ) and have used it two times on motorcycle tires. I know you're not to run a plugged tire for long, but I have with a full load on tour, no problem. Second time I plugged a tire the tire only had about 2000 miles on it when I repaired it, I ran it for another 10000 miles. So take a look at this well made kit and hope you never have to use it.

2019 Goldwing tires lasted almost 14k miles. Bought new set and on the way home threw nail in rear tire. Sticky rope plugged it . Took 10 minutes. Reamer was sharp. Got a new tire and then a week later , you guessed it... another nail. Plugged it just as easily . New tire hasn't befallen the same fate ……...yet.

I have had to plug a tire on the road. I used the reamer that came with the kit. I have never had a problem getting it to work. I will say i had to drive it in with my hand then it worked fine.

One thing you are right on about is that high winds suck .
    Love your videos .Thanks .

Cruiseman, Dirtiest condition I rode in was in southern Utah just after leaving Monument Valley. Dirt was blowing across the road and drifting like snow and visibility was terrible. Don't think I ever got all of the sand out of the Wing. Most consistent wind that I've lived in was the Panhandle of Nebraska. Had a saying that if you don't ride in the wind there, you don't ride. Have a safe trip.

I lived in El Paso for a year stationed at Ft. Bliss. Lots of wind and dust. Also when I went to Billings, Montana in 2007 for Wing Ding the wind in South Dakota was massive.

We are held up in Iowa because of storms and tornadoes coming back from Colorado to NJ. We had strong cross winds on way out in both Iowa and Nebraska. We got out of Rocky Mtn. Nat. Park just before they closed it for Snow. We been out for 2 weeks. We use the the old Goldwing bags for The saddlebags but don’t pack them tight and we have the Corbin Saddlebag Doors which helps a lot. I have 3 pairs of jeans few long sleeve T shirts and and 3 short sleeve 1 pair of shorts, underwear and socks. I put my toiletries bag in cavity of Corbin door. The wife has the other saddlebag and I have a Wolfman med Bag with rain gear and cold weather gear and 2 pair’s of sneakers on the trunk rack.

Have a safe trip Cruiseman. My friend and I rode through crosswind a few years ago. We were heading east from Arizona to Texas and had to lean the bikes. The most tiring ride I ever made. Thanks for the video. 👍

I noticed in the first 3 seconds of the packing portions of this video is that you're not traveling with the better half. I'm looking for us to do a 5-day road trip, but I'm guessing *_my_* allocation will be one saddle bag, while she gets the other saddle bag and the top box. Hopefully I can get half of the luggage rack bag.

    Hello Cruiseman!
I can readily relate to what you’re experiencing in heavy wind on I-20 West! I have made many trips to Las Vegas, through the Mohave desert where I have experienced winds up to 60 mph gusts. Before I installed the belly pan on my1996 GL1500 Aspencade the wind picked me and my bike up and literally set me off the freeway! Needless to say, I had to turn around and go back into Las Vegas, to my hotel and spend the night. Before ny next trip I installed a belly pan, problem solved!!!

I noticed that when packing your bike, you did not have the glove box lock from Traxxion Dynamics.. was that an old video or did you take that out? I have always used the mushroom plugs, but last year had one that would not set. Now I pack gummy worms too. In Florida in 2004, after we had two hurricanes in a three week span, when the roofers arrived everywhere, I had 5 nails in the back tire in one month. Thank goodness I had not got around to buying a new tire. Be safe. I enjoy your videos and repair videos.

I've never seen one of those small collapsible soft side coolers that didn't leak. So what I do is I put the Ice in a ziploc freezer bag.

I second the use of Ziploc quart or gallon bags whenever I put any ice in the saddle bags or trunk. I use the freezer bags, heavier duty and they have the double zipper.

Late to this video, but YES I've dealt with high winds during many trips to include the Stare of Nebraska. Crossing that state on I-80 will wear you out... Traveling solo presents zero issues with packing. Only time I have issues is when my wife goes with me. As is typical, she brings 2 months worth of clothes for a 10 day trip. I had to buy a Bushtec trailer for two up. Question for you on gas mileage... how severely does pulling a trailer effect the gas mileage?

I tried to work out what speed you were doing, but couldn't quite see. I always comply with speed limits in built-up areas but, on dual carriageways here in the UK, it's quite rare for anyone to overtake me on my 2019 Goldwing, except at night when you can never be sure that it isn't a Police car coming up behind you. I'd be interested to hear what top speed you've had out of your 2018 Goldwing, Cruiseman. If it's more than 100mph, then we will assume that you were enjoying a track day!

sure seems like everyone is passing you & rather quickly too, whats the speed limit on that road? why not put all your clothes on one side & all your bike stuff & tools on the other side. & I think your spray bottles are going to fall over within 1 mile of your driveway (edit- lol, just realized maybe thats why your riding so slow) . Also, i didn't see any wet weather gear? I'm sure you always have that stored somewhere on the bike.

Honestly, the poor design and low capacity of the Goldwing ‘s side cases is pathetic. I just rode a K1200gt and the side cases are much, much bigger, better designed and detachable! Carry them into your hotel. Honestly, I give Honda a D grade for the side storage on this bike.

I feel for you because I don’t like riding in the wind. When I lived in Southern CA I had to deal with the Santa Ana winds. Now that I live in Central Orange I have to deal with wind that comes off the Cascade Mountain Range, but it doesn’t bother me as much as the Hot Santa Ana’s. Secondly, in CA I had to ride my police bike for my job, so I didn’t have the choice not to ride. Now that I’m retired, I avoid riding in heavy wind whenever possible. That dusty wind you’re riding in has to be brutal on your eyes and exhausting. Hang in there!

I just plugged my first tire last week. I picked up a screw while turning around. I thought it was just me, with having difficulty getting the reamer in. I moved the entire bike, while it was on the center stand, before I finally got it in. The plug holds pressure and stays right where I put it. Thank you for making some great videos! Btw, concealed carry is a big one for me. I agree, we are on our own..

Wouldn't it be a lot simpler to just pack the OEM bags designed and shaped for the saddle bag and trunk compartment, instead of using those compartments "for" the suitcase? Pack the bags, stow in compartments, with space left over for incidentals. Either way works of course, but for me, I prefer just packing the individual bags for the convenience of easy removal.

In the 70’s I Rode from Ft Bliss to Orlando and return on a CB 750 Honda. on the return leaving DFW I hit side winds that were so strong I had to constantly lean into them to maintain control. When I are in home I of cites was exhausted, and dehydrated. The next morning I noted the side tread on the tires were noticeably worn. Yea that ride kicked my ass period. Not a happy ride.

I have ridden in wind/dust so bad in New Mexico (on the 10) that everyone was stopped. I saw a Super Ten get blown off its sidestand - that is a wind. I have also taken shelter in Van Horn and Fort Stockton to avoid approaching dust and wind. No fun and extremely dangerous.

Used to bring a Stop n Go (I think it was called) plug gun kit back in the day. Never had to use it and eventually tossed it. Went bare for the last ten years. Picked up a large sheet metal screw in my Niken rear tire two weeks ago but was able to get the bike home. Asked around and all recommended DynaPlug. Never heard of it but fantastic! The plugs are very thin but a with a barbed tip that prevents extraction. Ingenious install process. Took three plugs to completely seal the hole (only four plugs max are allowed, so I was sweating it) but very easy to install. Technology looks solid -- no concern about plugs coming out. Highly recommended. Small to pack. No need for a drill IMO. Now I need to decide on a small high performance air pump to bring with. Thinking MotoPumps Air Shot -- looks good for the $$$.

Great timing, I’m about to go to my niece’s wedding, about a 260 mi ride to eastern Washington. My first trip on the wing and was wondering how I should pack the bike. We’ll get a north wind that is nasty at times, which can be a brutal crosswind going east or west. I can deal with that, but the gusts at times can startle me for sure. Safe riding Chris!

DAMN - that drill idea is great. I have used the sticky ropes in all kinds of ugly situations and I have a reaming tool meant for truck tire so it is all metal and you cannot break it (unlike plastic-handled tools, which break easily). I am definitely adding the drill. I like the idea of plugging a uniform hole made by a drill.

I am very curious as to the portable compressor you mentioned for filling a flat tire. Most the reviews and Youubes I have seen mention they work once or twice and then fail. Have you tried it? What brand? I am worried that in an emergency it fails. Also there is no 12V outlet on the new GLs so how do you connect the power?

    • @tomboyd224
      @tomboyd224 4 ปีที่แล้ว

If you haven't already added the 12v power plug, a pigtail for a battery tender, or some other 12v source, then you'd need a set of alligator clips attached to the bike's battery terminals.
