Your lucky to have that newer style filter cover and just have to take out 2 bolts. I have a 986 and my cover is one piece so I have to pull the entire bigger cover off. I think all that sediment that came out with the filter might be from the brake disks starting to deteriorate. You'll know they're wore out when you press the brakes and the pedal is soft are goes all the way down then it'll actually build pressure back and push your foot up.
The engine oil cooler also has a drain plug if you want to get a bit more dirty oil out of the system before refilling.
We actually had to change out the engine oil cooler. It had a leak on the coolant side.

The spring is from the shift linkage or ta sprag
Is the spring from the draft control?
