Hi James, just found your account and watched your entire BL tips videos series as I’d like to open my own store some day. Great hints and suggestions!
This one was bit of an eye opener for me as I had some headache about how to keep rearranging drawers as, say you plates section grows. With this system it doesn’t matter if you have plates in 20 different locations, just pick the order by the reference drawer numbers.

It took me years to realize this but yes, it is not a collection, it is a store with lots. When you collect you organize based on item type for easy building. When you sell, you can have bins of plate in all different areas. When you pull the order, it’s okay if you pull plates from bin 1 in the beginning of the order and then again from bin 120 towards the end of the order. Best of luck starting your store!! People always want parts and sets

I just started my store this year. Many sellers suggest a 4 digit number system starting with 0001. Now I am up to 0516 .
If you label bins 5, 50, 55 they all come up in search, but 0005, 0050, 0055 etc. Will search individually

My pab cups are PABC0001 and up.

If I have too many to fit, I label remarks like
PABC0009, AND 0078 If the same brick is in those 2 locations

For sealed sets I just use the rolling wire racks. They start shelving unit A
Then number the shelves. For example a set may be in B2. That is shelving unit B shelf 2.

Hi Jason, I didn’t know that about the search feature. I tend to use my letters and numbers and I like the way it works. When I search, A 1 and A 01 would be different searches. I have never had a problem with multiple bins coming up when I search and I think it is because the letters I use. I do think starting with 0001 is a great idea because it at least plans for having a 1000+ bins.

I see the rest of your replies and that is cool how you label them. I should have shown by sealed set shelf in this video but I did not. I will show it in another one. I do a similar method by saying S01 B02 meaning shelf 1 in box 2 is the set. I may change this around before I make a video on it but it sounds like you are really organized and that is great!!

I try to put as much as possible into the drawers by putting different colors of one piece together if the overall quantity isn't to big (the typical "15 pieces of 10 colors"). On the other side I've removed almost all "bag in a bin", because that feels like taking forever.

    • @leggomyjameso6082

The bags in bins does take forever when pulling orders but, I do think it is a great way to save space. If your space is limited for inventory then combining different lots in the same bin works well. That is good to know I am not the only one who does it.

@@leggomyjameso6082 I am still constantly learning about that tradeoff between time and space. For now I still could add many more drawers, but that seams to be a constant race against the lot count. It feels like it's slowing down a lot since I've reached about 5000 lots with more parts repeating than being all new.

I don't have a bricklink store or plan to because I am a lego collector but I'm going to use some of these tips for lego storage because I preferably use tackle boxes ik its not as efficient but these tips are great

I am glad this was able to help you even as a collector! I find the tackle boxes work great to save space but yes they are a little less efficient. They offer a great deal of variability as well and I like using them

I started with tackle boxes but I really like the kind like your red ones where the inner trays are removable. Picking a bunch of parts (especially small ones) from normal tackle boxes can take longer for me. With the removable trays I can dump onto a sorting tray, count out what I need and then dump back into bin.

    • @leggomyjameso6082
      @leggomyjameso6082  2 ปีที่แล้ว

I agree that the ones with the inner removable trays are better. Tackle boxes help save space but do not work great for small parts. When I have small parts such as stud parts in the tackle boxes, I always put them in a smaller bag so I can easily grab it.
The drawers are perfect for dumping the parts, getting what you need and putting the other parts back in. I’m glad you like my red ones!

Thanks for the tips, it realy helps.
I've spent a crazy amount on shelving but everything costs way more here in Australia:)
But I've gone all in recenly and have bought a lot of big sets so a lot of big shelves.
Still concidering if I should trying to part out some on BrickLink...

More shelves are always better if you have the money and space! I have mailed sets to Australia but usually larger sets because shipping is expensive.
Parting out sets seems like a great way to make money but I find that without a large store inventory of other items, parts will not sell as fast as you want. I have parts from parting out sets that have been in my inventory for 3+ years now. Dropping prices helps. If you ever want to part sets out, I recommend parting out 10+ different sets to really increase the diversity of your inventory. I hope this helps:)

@@leggomyjameso6082 Ok thanks for the tip:)
I don't even know if I could make time to part out anyway. I've been spending all day every day reserching sets and finding them at good prices plus driving for hours because I live in the country. I thought the end of year sales would have the best prices but I keep finding sets cheaper here and there. That Amazon day sale was super cheap, but not many sets to choose from.
