    The mahogany guitar sounds more appealing because it has a fuller mid-range. The rosewood guitar's mid-range is scooped up, which leaves space for human vocals. So I'd say rosewood is more suitable for singer-songwriters

    Thanks so much for this comparison - I was actually looking at 000 versions of these models for my first Martin, but couldn't try them due to lack of new or local supply. This review finalized my leaning to the Rosewood version, which I picked up barely used and have been very satisfied with its rich sound.

    I have a OOO16 rosewood w/scalloped bracing, and it sounds very much like the rosewood D16 here. I'm sure glad I went with rosewood now, because the mahogany sounds thinner and more metallic to me. Great video comparison, with excellent audio quality ... thanks!

    • @piedpeter1

      If you listen very closely you'll notice the mahogany is warmer and richer. The rosewood sounds more pronounced and defined but missing mid-range and unless singing there is tendency for ear fatigue. Did you notice how each time he played the mahogany he smiled more. Both great guitars!

    Hey Jarvis,great comparison. I have been playing guitar for 34 years and I have to say that the Martin with the Indian Rosewood sounds like a"Real" guitar compared to the Mahogany, nice deep full clear sound and not twangy or mushy like the mahogany seems to be. Thank you very much for the video. If you are curious , I have a video that I am not too proud of on TH-cam under SpiderFingersRob. Yes, I am the artist as well, hey, cheers. May the force always be with you!

    I've just purchased a D16GT this week... I didn't have the chance to try 1 with the rosewood back and sides... so myself I wouldn't be able to tell the difference without comparing each of them side by side.
    But So far So good with my new Martin D16GT... I don't have any regrets with my new guitar! Cheers!

    Thanks for the exposition Jarvis, very well done! I felt the Rosewood was darker, heavier and well balanced in tone. The mahogany seemed brighter, not quite as well balanced.

    Mahogany sounded a little thinner & Rosewood more crisp to my ears.Did the both have new & same brand of strings? For me New stings are to metallic twangy. I like them best after they have mellowed a bit. Both of those guitars are only going to improve.

    The hog sounds brighter and louder than rose, inspite of being warm and woody in essence. Hog's the winner in my idea. But some of us are fooled by the price and the value of a wood... for them: the more expencieve wood=the more adorable sound. But thats not true, Anyhow, the tastes are different. Ive always been switched back and forward between the woods, had rosewoods for more than 10 years, but when my hands got a hog, it was like a new world of sound was opened up to me.

    Very nice review, nice comparison. I'm after either a Full body Mahogany///Mahogany back n sides Spruce Top, or Rosewood back n Sides with Spruce Top. I think the finger picking sounded nice on the Mahogany. Slightly more resonance. Still gotta do more research, as I tried out a Rosewood back n sides with Spruce Top in a shop, an it was amazing, but still need to try out a Mahogany.. Who knows.. not made mind up yet!!!

    Another great review my brotha!! I'm looking to buy the RGT.. I own a blueridge br 160 and its a little too high in tone. But it's loud as hell, so great for playing outside unplugged.. QUESTION: is the martin 16 rgt going to be richer and warmer than the Blueridge?? And I don't really want it to be louder than my br!
    Thanks again Jarvis for all these reviews!

    • @TheGuitarSpaSingapore
      @TheGuitarSpaSingapore  11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      the martins have more depth plus when you play on the upper frets the tone is more even compared to the Blueridge...Caution ..after you buy your martin...you may end up selling your BRidge...cheers and have a successful 2014 ahead

    Great review, you enjoy playing! Picked mahogany one up last year for $600 used with original case, once in a lifetime deal, freeking stole it! Sounds fantastic especially when played quietly, if you listen carefully to mahogany it is more balanced and rich, the rosewood is more brighter, catchier but missing the mids and prone to ear fatigue imho. Theres a reason spruce and mohagany are the standard in my opinion as evidenced in the last comparison demo the difference in tone really obvious and players smile popped out with the mahogany. Sold the Taylor, both are good guitars tho. Also TH-cam compression alters tone so use higher quality headphones. Next going to rob a bank for a Hummingbird!🙃

    For flat picking, you're gonna' probably want the mahogany. The notes will have more bite to them. The rosewood will be awesome for a fingerpicker with great touch. For strumming alone, I would pick the rosewood because it is reicher and has more bottom.

    • @Life-of-Bluegrass_Music
      @Life-of-Bluegrass_Music 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      What are you talking about? Rosewood is what people prefers for flat picking. Rosewood is louder and deeper. You want a guitar that will cut through.

    Great review! These are so insightful for me.
    I have to break with the majority it seems and say that I prefer the rosewood. They certainly both sound great, but I like that extra rosewood oomph and find the mahogany to be almost too much crackle and pop.

    Excellent no bullshit review ... why is it that a lot of reviewers come across as second rate
    frustrated standup comedians? Oh, because they are! Thanks ... Hard to pick which one I like best. Rosewood model is very "open" and "dryer" than mahogany one but mahogany is "sweeter" ... I've always been a mahogany fan but this D16RGT might just change my mind. Its quite a bit more expensive than the mahogany though ... by about 600 Aust$! thanks again

  • @nellatrab
    @nellatrab 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Saying I want to hear rosewood better is because I expect to hear it better...ha ! The rosewood is louder, more defined with enormous clarity, color and resonance, including a woody reverb. The mahagany( as Jarvis says) :) is flatter and less resonate, which some may prefer?

  • @mikesala5858
    @mikesala5858 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Jarvis,
    Does a D16rgt have similar bass as a D28? I played a d28 yesterday but I wasn't all that happy with the sound.. But I've played other new D28's that I liked the sound.. I'm waiting for my local store to get a D16Rgt in stock so I couldn't compare them side by side.. I either want to buy a d28 or the D16rgt.. But I also don't know if I like how thick the neck of the D28 feels either.. The D16rgt has a thinner neck right?

    • @TheGuitarSpaSingapore
      @TheGuitarSpaSingapore  11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mike the D28 needs to be setup correctly...during the first year the sound will be a little contained but play it well and the D28 will open up beautifully

      The Guitar Spa Singapore
      Hey, Jarvis. How significant is the difference in sound between a brand new solid top guitar and one that has "opened up" (say, over the course of the first year or two)?
      The reason I ask is because I just got a brand new Washburn WD10S (ordered online), and it sounds very dull and muted. I have to work very hard to get any kind of dynamics or projection, and I can only pull so much out of it. I'm wondering if I should sell it or hang on to it for a while to see if it opens up, though I just can't imagine that there could possibly be that significant of a change over time. What do you think, based on your experience? Is there really that much difference in sound between a brand new guitar and one that has had a couple years of playing? Thanks. And have a blessed day.

    D-16RGT, Taylor 314CE, Blueridge 180 and any high end Ayers with RW back.. which will you choose? Consider it for a long term performance guitar.. I am leaning more to Taylor due to the lifetime warranty.. yet BR for the low price n high end materials.. Martin for it's legendary traditional warm tone..

    I played both and although they are both great sounding instruments , I bought the Rosewood, for more than one reason.
    The shop trades in good quality used guitars and they had a good stock of Martin D's
    I played 4 D16's , and must say that they all had slightly different tones and deliveries... He then handed me a D16 RGT and then a D28 ( Both Rose woods )
    All of these Guitars , bear in mind are around £1000 . D28 £1500.
    We buy the martin we can afford, not neccessarilly the ones that we want

Google (Spoon Philips.) Also a great demo man. This model next to an HD 35. I could not spit Hair's between them. (Acoustic letter. Review.) Price per pound. I have to go with this. Very satisfied. It's well worth the money I paid. I have also tried a few different sets of Martin strings. at the moment I have Martin bluegrass SP 80/20 bronze. I was a bit worried because they state they have a slightly deeper bass than normal strings. But I have been pleasantly surprised with them.
      They're not expensive strings like the lifespans range and give a full body tone very pleasant to the ear.
      All I can say is, if you're thinking of spending this kind of money on a guitar, whatever make, go and try a few out first. For the money you will be spending it's worth a traveling around if you have to.

      Terence Smith Hey again Terence. How are you doing? I got guitar a couple of days ago and its brilliant, but a little tight and overly bright on the sound. Did you have this situation as well. Cheers from sweden

    • @terencesmith2369
      @terencesmith2369 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi David.
      I can't say mine is overly bright, yes it has a bright high end which I like, but that's down to personal preference. I would suggest experimenting with some different strings and makes. My RGT came with Martin lifespan SP MSP7200. Which I found to be good. But as I said in my post I have been playing with Bluegrass strings which have slightly deeper bass strings, although very slightly. Again I suppose it's personnel preference. Also depends on what type of music you play.

  • @darkoanton5
    @darkoanton5 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    To my ears, the mahogany sounds closer to a Taylor than the rosewood. I prefer the rosewood a little more but I'd say it depends on the type of music you like to play.

    If 10% of the sound comes from the back and sides. How come we here a big difference?

      Jose J Castaneda that's the theory and whether that happens is a mysterious thing we can't really explain reason being the guitar is made up of many parts

    I need to try it but you can always EQ a Rosewood guitar to sound like a Mahogany guitar. Rosewood has a wider range is EQ while Mahogany is shorter. This means you can always turn down the low and high EQ of the Rosewood and turn up up the mids to get it to sound like a Mahogany guitar. However, EQing a Mahogany guitar to a Rosewood guitar will not work. Raising the EQ on the bass and treble that is NOT there because the range of the Mahogany guitar is shorter. None existence.

    I bought a D16, but it was labeled as a D1, so I only paid $899 instead of $1049

    Rosewood sounds brighter. Mahogany warmer.

    Rosewood wins - no contest. But it sure is no D-28! Don't know what strings are on these guitars, maybe just too light (?) - but if they are coated strings, no wonder they don't sound particularly good.

      It is louder then a d-28. D-28 has standard x brace. The d-16 has a hybrid scallop brace, which is forward shifted. The 16 line sounds better.
