I am not inclined to think the popcorn example (or other examples that relate to the quantity of some physical property possessed by an abstract object) involves a false presupposition. If it can be fairly re-stated as "Popcorn has a greater quantity of crunchiness than democracy has," it seems to be true, since some crunchiness is greater than no crunchiness. Similarly, if I say, "The triangle has greater crunchiness than the square," it is false since zero is not greater than zero. As long as you have two comparable quantities, it should be all right. Also, if you say, "Socrates had a greater fondness for dodo birds than Obama does," you seem to have said something that could easily be true, even though it is not even possible for Obama to have any fondness for them. So the impossibility of democracy crunchiness is not compelling to me.
