It's biggest mistake is the hyper focus on a single character. It's telling when most people don't even known the names of most of the crew after this much time.
That was a major mistake. I think I was 4 seasons in and couldn't name but 1 or 2 characters on the bridge because the focus was always on mikey. Not to mention the technology wasn't the only thing powered by magic mushrooms. I think the people who wrote the plot were high. And yes, the woke shit killed it. The episode where the 50 year old white guy who somehow invented tribbles is being commanded by a "captain" who looks all of 21? Really? Did Starfleet stop promoting on the basis of merit and just started following DEI standards for promotions? Has it stopped the evil reign of white man tyranny? You know, those evil white colonizing bastards like Picard and Kirk? Have we solved the future's problems because we have exterminated white men (and eventually women)? Is it really genocide if it's justified? Or are we just going to force the white people into subservient second class citizen roles because of their skin color. I have a feeling that was totally what Star Trek was about. Equality? Fuck that! This is Equity! we can fix the past by becoming genocidal racists! oh wait.... I guess history is repeating itself.
Star Trek series are often shortened to their acronym. Knowing this common knowledge, can we just pause for a second at how idiotic it was to name the series STD? How tf did this get approved?
I made it to season 3. It is barely watchable. Even with the visuals, the virtue signalling is off the charts. Embarrassing. This woke train has run off the rails big-time. Sigh
I actually liked the first two seasons, despite the obvious wokeness with the characters (though I really don't like tha fact that theu were so over focused on like... 4 or 5 characters only, I don't even know the names of the crew). But the third one was a little bit too much.
Hell yeah ! I really REALLY loved Lorca as a character ! I thought his no nonsense style was the best thing ever. Pike was also awesome. And, evil Georgiou was also great ! Almost everyone else can go away, with maybe the exception of Saru, of course.
As a person who frequently sided with Worf during briefing-room discussions, I also quite liked Lorca. I know Trek is supposed to be optimistic, but there ARE situations where "the best diplomat is a fully-charged phaser bank".
I watched the first 15 minutes of the first show, turned it off and never went back. Michelle Yeoh was a real sales point for me but by minute 15 I thought I can' watch this show anymore. From what I heard, my sense about turning this show off was correct.
I tried to give it a chance, but after painfully plodding through the nonsensical first season, I could no longer watch it after season 2 episode 3. I don't think I have ever been this ANNOYED by a main character. Heck, they should've replaced Michael Burnham with Yar yar Binks, at least THEN it would have been a proper parody of the series.
Absolutely agree with you, I never made it past about 15 minutes, never went back, never will, and I am a BIG TREKKIE. STD is not Star Trek at all, it's a modern piece of woke rubbish.

Evidently people who aren't you enjoy the show. Given that it costs CBS over a hundred million dollars to film a season of Discovery, it must be doing well to continue justifying it. The show has now lasted longer than Kirk's run.

Thanks for standing up and saying what needed to be said. I totally agree with you as do so many others. I am blown away by those people out there who actually defend this show even though it is clearly pushing diversity and shoving it right down your throats every opportunity it gets. I am all for diversity but like you said it must be balanced and should not be used to check off a box for diversity's sake. I love the story in season 1 and season 2 but you could definitely tell that they were ramping up the woke nature of the show the closer they got to season 3. Season 3 was a tragedy to watch and I can no longer take it. The spectacular cinematography, acting, and special effects of season 1 and 2 are a distant memory now. Keep up the good work man !
Aggreed, dispite the visual effect and best efforts of the cast it's almost unwatchable. Just like Dr Who, the woke writers are ruining a great franchise. 😞
@@judaegekikamen4223 being "woke" isnt really the problem. Star trek has ALWAYS been "woke" since TOS. Thats not inherently the problem. Its just HOW they do it, its just so ham fisted. Diversity isnt an issue, its always been diverse. Its simply how they do this garbage.
Completely agree. I've loved Star Trek since I was 14 (1979). I've soaked up all of the series, movies. I can set my mind to ignore the obvious historical discontinuities, but what has stopped me from watching part way through S3 is the far-fetched writing. It's Mary Sue situation. Any time there's an overwhelming problem they write some magic to solve it. And then Saru makes Tilly his first officer, and everybody thinks it's great. Utter condescending, pandering bullshit. It insults the intelligence. There's more time spent expressing heart-felt feelings than there is doing anything else. It's a repulsive insult to Trekkies.

Hooray another wise thinker. If STE was cancelled because of apparent low ratings, how come this rubbish is still being shown. Get rid of it and don't even try to syndicate it.
The whole notion of Tilly even being allowed on board is silly....much less given a position of authority. At best, such a person might make it as a "geek squad" person they consult, but NEVER allow on the bridge or around critical negotiations!
Ok. I thought I was crazy with what they wrote for Tilly in season 3, with literally no build up for proper explanation. Thanks for confirming why it felt incorrect.
@@pointermom7641 nope, they even said it themselves. It was a room full of women with no one else in the room, I.e. men. So they decided to write out their fanfics into "canon"

But that was a fail at being woke too because the trill is multi gender due to the male and female host history. Im sure she said she wanted they/them pro nouns. Ultimate facepalm

"Failed" Three seasons, fourth in production. Two spinoffs. Another spinoff in the works and another two spinoffs being talked about. Talk about failure!
Thank You. I struggled through the first season, when the second season came out I struggled through two episodes and finally called it quits it. It just wasn’t Star Trek. Could not relate to the characters, they were not Star Fleet. When Voyager was announced and they introduced Captain Janeway, I thought the show was going to be a flop. But after the first episode, “ The first episode”, The character of Janeway fruit she was Starfleet, the acting the writing was all top shelf and for every episode it was top shelf. I really mourned on the show coming to an end.
Tilly was a major insult to me because I too have aspergers/autism, during college my classmates watched Discovery and they all assumed people with aspergers and autism are like her. It pissed me off so much.
Imagine having something that causes you to be unfairly segregated from the rest of the world. You're very intelligent as a person, but you don't get to live a normal life. You don't have any lasting friendships because you're never given a chance. All you have to go by is the internet, video games, and television. Then as you get older, you notice everything you enjoy become catered mainly towards upper-middle-income adults with cushy jobs. You can't find any new games, TV shows or movies that appeal to you anymore, and the ones you already have become stale and boring to indulge in. Then one day, you find out that on one of those newer TV shows that desecrated one of your favourite sci-fi franchises, there is a character who's supposed to represent the kind of person you are, but was obviously put there as nothing but a token, to sell some manufactured caricature of your identity to the "normal" privileged majority. This show is trash.
You forgot to mention the over use of sarcasm. Lower ranking officers speaking sarcastically to higher ranking officers would never stand in any Star Trek series (INCLUDING THE MIRROR UNIVERSE). They would be dismissed, confined to quarters, relieved of duty or told "A word in my ready room, please." The sarcasm on these shows are not humorous in any way. They're out of line and disrespectful. And one other oddity. Why do they feel the need to make some sort of emotional speech in every scene like they're about to die or something. If you cut all that out, it would easily remove 30 minutes and give the show a more balanced pacing. Discovery has some REALLY awesome science fiction story lines but sadly they're always drowning in some unnecessary bullshit monologue that means less than nothing.
I don't think I ever had such a massive eye roll in my life when they introduced the trans they/them character....and how sickening the awwws and oooos where from the characters...I mean this is in the future and space and all kinds of alien life form but this is such a revelation? POO, get out of here. Let Michelle Yeoh go rogue, steal a ship and take Saru, the two female pilots (I do like them), Dr Stamets and the engineer and LINUS but while escaping blow up everyone else...I like my plan. I'm not a trekkie, I enjoy stories, I enjoy good characters...and Micheal is not a good character.
I'm autistic and I am considered to have a neurological defeat leading to a lifelong disability. But if I thought I was a woman, I would be a hero. Isn't modern diversity wonderful!
Glad you had the courage to say what needed to be said. I lasted through only the first two episodes of the first season before seeing what it was, being disgusted, and vowing never to watch again. The only male character they had on the bridge was an alien who was afraid of his own shadow. I cannot understand how any true Star Trek fan could have sat through this. This isn't star trek. It's trash. And certainly not something I can share with my young children. You should not have backed off in the last 10 seconds of your video... that kind of destroyed your message.
Agreed, the alternative isn't zero diversity vs wokeness. Its simply equality for all that we ask for. The American way of life is under attack by the radical left(equity vs equality. History vs crt) they run the culture wars and our art is failing as a result. It's crazy to see how tng handled the immigration debate with respect to both sides vs how picard literally compares ice agents to nazis. It's as of they think us minorities don't care about border security and it's just Maga whites with kkk hoods. Truly insulting and ignorant
This isn't star trek, nothing has been star trek since Enterprise in 2001. My Star trek is nothing like this racist piece of garbage excuse of a franchise. Kept an open mind and watched the pilot of star trek discovery and it took all I had not to throw my fuckin controller at my Screen, I've been done with it since.
Netflix is terrible for this. It's gotten to the point where I keep track of all the wokeness in the show. Lead characters should be female and of a darker skin colour and not conform to stereotypes. Many should be gay or bi-sexual. Those that are gay need to not conform to stereotypes and be strong, independent characters. A person with a disability should be given a role where their ability is crucial. All in all, the people being cast for parts should be offended that they're chosen for reasons they are.
What's wrong with that? White male and female leads have been around forever and remain dominant in relationships on TV and movies in power positions. I have a problem when there's no balance, but there's not enough black male leads unless they're stereotyped to death. I've seen more black female leads that are still answering to white males bosses or in a mixed relationship (hardly ever with a black male) get more screen time. It's like reminding us, "Hey you have a great job and we'll recognize you but white is right and we still have the power. As far as people with disabilities, how do you define that? That's arrogant. The only thing you were correct about was your last statement. Your second statement is offensive Brutha...

It's like Midas but without turning things to Gold, except they turn everything to shit!
Your criticisms of ST Disco are spot on. I have been watching Star Trek since boy hood. Part of the appeal of it was that it presented a future in which you wanted to live. The dark, misandrist, LGTBQIA+ future of ST Disco is as repulsive to me as the future depicted in Orwell's novel "1984" It is the first ST show that I could not bring myself to watch.
What’s worse is they have decided to do a season 4! So I tried to find a place where I could go and complain and so I went to Facebook. On the Discovery Facebook sight you aren’t allowed to say ANYTHING negative about Star Trek discovery or the show! So I tried to find somewhere to complain and I ended up writing CBS in Australia. That’s where CBS business is located. I am so glad to have found this sight. I was so upset when Stacey Abrams was written into the show as the ruler of the universe! I guess since she can’t win as governor of Georgia then Hollywood will make her ruler of the universe. 🤢

Discovery just feels like a "hey look at us were totally down with you and are cool too" type of ordeal. I was always under the impression that in the trek universe they were long past these stupid "problems", guess they forgot
No, they are well aware what they are doing. When Stewart comes right out and says his show is a reaction to “Brexit and Trump”, not about being inspirational sci-fi like in days of old, the agenda is clear
There is a distinct difference in tone. Classic trek was hopeful and optimistic. Even ds9. This garbage is angry and condescending. It's less of a show and more of a patronizing lecture.
I couldn't agree more with this analysis. I watched Season 1 and episode 1 of Season 2. This should have been called "Star Trek Discovery: The Michael Burnham Saga". If had talked to my superiors the way she does, I would have dishonorably discharged in seconds....regardless of my abilities. I will not watch another episode and it's a shame, because the special effects are awesome.
As for "all previous Trek series had the cast as equal players." Is this a joke? That has never been the case. EVER. The biggest disparity is TOS. "Hailing frequencies open." Two actors on two different series almost quit the show because of it. One did (Tasha), and the other only stayed because she was talked out of it by Martin Luther King. The captain has always been the lead, and the lower the rank, the less screen time...in EVERY previous Trek show.
_"The captain has always been the lead, and the lower the rank, the less screen time...in EVERY previous Trek show."_ That is true only for TOS which stands appart...because of the time it was made. Just the next series, TNG, took different approach, gone was the cowboy diplomacy where captain was leading every away mission, punching first alien he met in the face. Leading away mission was first officer's job now. Cast memebers had their leading episodes.
I tried to give it a chance but could only make it part of the way into season 2. Star Trek has a long history of diversity but they always had great characters to love. Trying to push the white dudes out at all costs is not a winning strategy or even actual diversity. For example... I love Expanse way more than discovery, they have a super diverse cast, but not at the expense of the plot or characters. The cast have improved and the characters were developed to a point that those that used to annoy me don’t. Gunny for example, her acting was poor to start but has improved to the point I don’t mind the character. Great points and review from one of my favourite comedians!

For all of you throwing around that right-wing trope called "woke," can you actually tell the rest of us what you really mean to say? Is it "I hate watching an intelligent Black female as the protagonist?" Or is it "why do they have to put somebody's gayness in my freakin' face?" Or "there's the gender pronouns that I'm uncomfortable with..." Quibble all you will with canon, the writing, the visuals, etc, but just come right the f out and say what you don't like instead of hiding behind the cowardice of "it's too woke," ffs
It sucks because it is written by the new generation of touchy-feely young people. Who think we constantly need long discussions on what the characters are feeling. Repeatedly confirming every five minutes how much they love each other. It's sickeningly sweet. They should watch the original series and learn that the audience will know that the characters care and respect one another without hammering the audience with it. Subtly and good acting are much more effective to translate emotions than long diatribes.
They seem to think diversity and lens flairs compensate for bad writing. Don't think I've ever watched a show where I am accutely aware of how many times I roll my eyes :).
You know how societal problems should be brought up in Star Trek? Bones being prejudice of Spock - he’s not a horrible person and his opinion of Spock doesn’t define him. He just has this one character trait that isn’t beaten over your head and is only brought up as comic relief to point out the absurdity of the stuff that comes out of his mouth when we know different.
There was more to learn and the lessons were well presented. It was fun to watch. It did not make you feel that you were being forced to accept a totally one sided view of the World. I don't care if a person is woke or not, but don't step on my toes trying to force your views down on me, because then I will not be quiet, and I have very big feet to step back onto your toes.
The biggest crime is that money keeps getting thrown at this trash. Think of all the great series that were cancelled before their time but someone, or a group of someone’s with an agenda of forcing all this on children to further pull our society through the sewers. Who cares that they are a tiny minority let’s make every single tv character that way until people think that they are the abnormal ones.
Jet Reno... ...that’s a woman?? I thought that was a 68 year old methhead recovery dude. The part that utterly killed it for me was the deliberate making fun of Gene Roddenberry, by making him a janitor that scoops bodygoop with a shitty shovel and this “Jet” person says, “yeah, already forgot you, shut up.”
I've tuned out this show, and I've tuned out Picard. (I've also tuned out Doctor Who, and I couldn't watch The Orville after the first season...which is sad, because I really like that show and they pulled off the exploration of the human condition really well and evenly in the first season.) People are telling me that they've learned their lesson in Strange New Worlds and I should give that show a chance, but you know what they say, "Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice... can't get fooled again." The biggest problem is the aggressive "in your face"-ness about it. It's like it's intentionally meant to offend the sensibilities of anyone who isn't as progressively woke as they are, as much as possible. The Expanse (and the aforementioned first season of The Orville, and for that matter Voyager, Deep Space Nine, Next Generation, et. al.) were good examples of how you can explore or have in your show different, "progressive" characters but not have whatever woke attribute they possess be the only reason they're in the damn show, and not be shoving their alternative lifestyle down your throat every chance they got. The hardest part about all of this is that you cannot even bring this topic up in a conversation (at least not in California) without somebody starting to shout at you, label you with all sorts of ad hominem attacks and calling you hateful... in the most hateful manner (ironic, innit?). Trek always has been and should still be a vehicle that promotes discussion, not used as a vehicle to promote division and exclusion.
Asian American here. Didn’t like Michelle Yeoh before. Never understood the appeal of her. Now, with her new work additions to her CV, I really don’t like her. She’s preachy and superior. To be fair, other MALE Trek characters have been preachy too. But somehow, the writers were able to portray a character who suffered and who was principled. Yeoh’s character is just insufferably in your face about her “I’m better than you-ness.”

Oh yes! everything said here is absolutely true, nothing is sexist . The best thing about Star Trek Discovery is the visuals. They aare over compensating with diversity to the point that everything else which matters is sacrificed. It is so true how little depth the bridge officers have. They really should have narrowed the focus instead of trying to be all things to all people which you really can't do well with out writing better. You don't have to do it all at once. Too bad.
The alternative isn't 'no diversity at all'. The alternative is to cast on talent instead of skin color or sex, and to write stories based on traditional concepts of great writing and not woke agendas.

I actually liked the first two seasons, despite the obvious wokeness with the characters (though I really don't like tha fact that theu were so over focused on like... 4 or 5 characters only, I don't even know the names of the crew). But the third one was a little bit too much.
Of course they hire people to tick boxes, there's an Asian guy who barely has any lines. He's just there like trophy on a shelf.
That makes the original series look woke.
I tried. Seriously tried. But it’s just so bad, I cannot watch it. I liked the captain of the first season. The rest ist just unwatchable.
The level of over-the-top melodramatic acting of the Burnham character is sickening and intolerable.
I watched the first 15 minutes of the first show, turned it off and never went back. Michelle Yeoh was a real
sales point for me but by minute 15 I thought I can' watch this show anymore. From what I heard, my sense
about turning this show off was correct.

Completely agree. I've loved Star Trek since I was 14 (1979). I've soaked up all of the series, movies. I can set my mind to ignore the obvious historical discontinuities, but what has stopped me from watching part way through S3 is the far-fetched writing. It's Mary Sue situation.

Noooo bones was never sarcastic 🤦

Lead characters should be female and of a darker skin colour and not conform to stereotypes.
Many should be gay or bi-sexual. Those that are gay need to not conform to stereotypes and be strong, independent characters.

_"The captain has always been the lead, and the lower the rank, the less screen time...in EVERY previous Trek show."_
That is true only for TOS which stands appart...because of the time it was made.

People are telling me that they've learned their lesson in Strange New Worlds and I should give that show a chance, but you know what they say, "Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice... can't get fooled again."
The biggest problem is the aggressive "in your face"-ness about it.
Wait till you get to season 3 and they start playing with pronouns...
OMG. I can't deal. LOL
As someone who has they/them pronouns, I can say that I had a good laugh at that scene
@@TheConfidentAsian You mean SHE can't deal
Asian American here. Didn’t like Michelle Yeoh before. Never understood the appeal of her. Now, with her new work additions to her CV, I really don’t like her. She’s preachy and superior.
To be fair, other MALE Trek characters have been preachy too. But somehow, the writers were able to portray a character who suffered and who was principled. Yeoh’s character is just insufferably in your face about her “I’m better than you-ness.”
I mean, she is a Terran. I'd say that is exactly how she should be portraying such a character.
@@jarynn8156 Okay, I’ll give you that. I need to watch more of this in order to make a better judgment. So far, Saru is my favorite character.
Maybe I’ll edit this in time to update my impressions.
Excellent video.
I agree with everything you say.
I somehow managed to make it through Season 3 of Discovery.
Now, I am done with Discovery!
The sooner it gets cancelled the better!
Oh yes! everything said here is absolutely true, nothing is sexist .
The alternative is to cast on talent instead of skin color or sex, and to write stories based on traditional concepts of great writing and not woke agendas.
......
NAAAAAH! /Steve Martin gag
I couldn't agree more with this assessment. I can't even get through the first episode of the 4th season
Can we have a show made in the modern era that's aimed at white males please?
Hello, @Eliot. That's fine, despite my casual enjoyment. Yet, I won't expect the fifth and final season to rule or drool.
Yeah I love star trek but this discovery is too woke ,what the heck is that all about? Its like they are trying to cram it down our throats. It puts me right off watching it and I love the sci fi stuff and great space ships it looks great but it is too woke so I hate it.
Yup
Well Said. This show just panders and insults and does not focus on the ACTUAL Star Trek but rather focused on its own agenda.
FFS CBS.
every episode is like a counseling session more about emotions than exploring/adventuring
I keep trying to give it a go and then...
Me too. But I gave up
Same here. I'm currently giving Season 2 another try but I always end up getting fed up 😡
Thanks for this vid, was going to binge watch this series but after seeing this, won't waste my time or data on it.
gay trek... what happened with this world .. first star wars completely ruined, than this... this is so sad :(
They ruined every sci fi and superhero movie or show that comes out .
