I'm glad you did this. You need to shoot through the chrono and into the jelly every time. JK I have somewhere between 3.5K and 5k of these Automatch. Not because I felt they were so good at the time it's just because they were available at the time. In shooting them I found that my target 10/22 just loves them. I was talking about them one day and a guy asked if I was referring to the Eley Match and when I told him the Federal Automatch bulk pack he kind of laughed. I told him not to laugh too hard since he didn't see what I was doing with them on paper. As your test shows though, the bulk pack can produce a squib every so often. I would have like to of seen the SD from the Chrono and the average form the 64 rounds. As always thanks for the video!!
Hey T&T. I run a lot of that Federal Auto Match out of my M&P 15/22’s. Wife, kids, and mine. It’s a good round for the price and good reliability. However, I do clean the M&P’s when they really start to get dirty and I can tell when it’s time. As always thanks for the video, good stuff my friend.
Enjoyed running into you at the local gun shop today and I agree, you should definitely get that 60 percent discount for all the free commercials you do 😎😂
Thank you for this test, I just bought my 1st bulk package 📦 of federal auto match at my local Walmart, I paid 22 dollars for it. I'm anticipating on picking up a 1976 ruger single six revolver next week, can't wait to try it out.
Hotter round or not but she damn near took the Queen’s title!! But like you said I believe it was just a really hot round just like we get the occasional under powered round . One small advantage is we can buy the Federal bulk at Walmart , but the sad part is the Punch is very elusive. Knowing where it fits into the use profile is important. I consider using .22LR as a self defense round as a last resort option only. I think it performed well considering only 2 recorded lower than 800 fps and no failures in 70 rounds. The Auto Match is a win in my book. Thanks for this test and all you do.
Thanks for the video and information.I still think if I was going to use 22 lr for self defense I would stick with the punch. Rather than the bulk which would be better than nothing.

@Tools&Targets I’m obliged to ya for doing this test. And this Texas boy can get kinda persnickety about things like chronographic measurements, so I took the time to go through your video and count each reading, and then crunch the numbers. I tried to cut and paste into this comment field, evidently TH-cam doesn't like it when you do that. So I can email you the data if you're interested. And BTW, after viewing this, I went to my local Wally World, and they had this very AutoMatch on the shelf. The sticker price was $21.16 for a box of 325 rounds, or 6.5 c per round, which sadly is not a bad price for bulk ammo these days. Walmart had their 3-box limit, so I got three boxes. I’ve yet to find the Punch locally.
It's hard to pass up for the price for sure. My chrono actually calculates and saves data like the avg, extreme spread, standard deviation, etc. but I totally forgot to put the footage in when I was editing and of course YT doesn't allow you to add footage to a video after it's uploaded.😆
Automatch at 65 yds in my XT22 is surprisingly accurate, my 1022s mostly accurate. I've got plenty of these rounds in my stockpile. You did an excellent review. Thanks.
Hey TOOLS! Since I just use .22 for plinking fun and not for self defense, that stuff is Hunky Dory for me. If I shoot enough of almost any brand of .22, there is always the occasional flyer or two. I have had pretty good luck with Federal.
I was hoping you would bring a punch round to show off it was a fluke no doubt, still the doubt is in my mind because that old gel might have hardened since the fluke comparison, I don’t know 🤷🏻♂️, still the punch has no rival and that’s a fact.
Well now this was a interesting video and I have been shooting a lot of that Federal Auto match lately, because like Walmart's everywhere the federal auto match is what they've been stalking lately and it is priced pretty good. I have been seeing a lot of the yellow boxes of the super X 22LR and it's about twice as high and it just sits there on the shelf. Also my Taurus TX 22 competition pistol really seems to like the Federal automatch no malfunctions and the accuracy is very good.
It could have been a one off hot load. But the chrono on those rounds was flying pretty fast. So to me the quality control at manufacturing could be off to.
@WalnutandSteel - 2 things: 1) I was very disappointed in the inconsistency of this newer ammo. I have the older style box from 5 years ago and saw only 18fps between the fastest & slowest, but that was from only 10 rounds tested through the RCBS guys chrono. 2) - Your TH-cam handle, "Walnut and Steel" is absolutely one of the bitchinest I've seen! 👍👍👍
Nice test. There are a lot of variables that can affect gel performance. If I remember correctly the punch didn't hit the second block in one test. I was really looking at that Taurus. Very nice tool. All those rounds and tests and no issues. I have got to get me one.
Paul Harrels country cousin. Lol. You have to go to his channel and watch him blow through 10,000s of rounds of different manufacturers 22lr. The performance repudiated some lofty reputations.
Sad to say neither the Punch nor the AutoMatch work in my Walther P22 but that is not on the ammo. The AutoMatch works well in my rifles and the Punch will certainly work in my H&R revolvers. Thanks for all your 22 vids. Always fun to watch.
It'll never be perfect. I mainly just wanted to test the consistency of the Automatch on this one since I had so many comments about how bad it was, failures to fire, etc. Didn't seem too bad to me.🤷♂️
Thanks for all your time and work for these videos. It would have been interesting to see the results if you shot one or two punch rounds in this test. It’s possible your gel density has changed being old melted blocks.
I’ve got one of those crazy little hats but it’s not as fancy as yours 🇺🇸👍.....wow that’s a fair variation.....brother I wouldn’t want to be hit by the weakest round.....the 🤜punch is more consistent 👍.... Thanks big fella 😎
Great video but a suggestion, the first test of these two rounds was done when the outside temperature was warmer and the gel may have been warmer and therefore softer as well. Todays test was conducted in a lower temperature so it would have been great (needed actually for a fair test) if you put a round or two of the Punch ammo into the same block for a true penetration comparison. Love your videos, thanks and keep them coming!!!...
Just picked up one box of the auto match for 21.19. I wasn’t sure if it would fire so I did a search and found your video. I will be going back for more while they still have it. I just got my TX 22, it does not like cascade 22lr. The box says 1250 FPS, but it won’t cycle the gun. It will shot the round and eject it, but it locks back as if it’s out of rounds even with rounds still in the magazine. Shot some blazer 38grn and it ran pretty good one lock in two magazines. CCI mini mag no issues. I’ll try this federal this weekend, hopefully it runs good for me like it does for you. I’ll post if it doesn’t. Thank you
That hat gets me every time. Reminds me of Randy Quaid in Vacation. My 10/22 eats everything but that Federal automatch. I really think I got a bad box or something. It wouldn't strip the rounds out of my BX-25 mags. So I just use it in my bolt rifle.
Thanks for posting, For me personally, cavitation and penetration is of no concern, as I would never consider using .22 lr for defensive situations, unless it was all I had, and it's not, as for velocity, I would never consider using a cartridge with a variation greater than 100+ fps, I do use Federal Ammunition as one of my favorite Defence and target rounds along with a couple others, in .22lr and .22wmr, I prefer CCI, I've never used any of Federal Punch or Hornady V-max.22 ammo, but will consider it in the future, Again, Thanks for the video, and have a great weekend, from Alabama.
Im really glad you re-tested the automatch and put em through the ringer👍👍. Yea i was wonderin if it was just a fluke. I still got love for ya Automatch, but that Punch is a beast.
I counted 10 or 11 that chrono'd below 890 fps. At 100 fps or so less than the average in the 900's, those might be considered weak to some extent. I think one chrono'd 802. Good test.
i think if you are concerned about over penetration the .22lr would be a good self defense round, especially in an apartment complex. my choice is the 9mm, 12 gauge buckshot and .556 but i live alone in a house with no close neighbors...
I have some of this ammo that I use for plinking in my more accurate rimfire rifles. It is 10 years old and a lot more consistent than this newer stuff that you are using! Federal better get it together... Keep on Truckin my friend!
If memory serves, I do believe that you have fired the Punch in remelted jelly, it performed as usual. I could be wrong about that remelted jelly test. The Automatch did 17-3/4 in the clear jelly and 30% less in this test, I don't think the jelly changed consistency by 30%, so yep, a fluke round in the first test.
As a control we needed a punch shot into that same block of jelly. Just to make sure that the jelly wasn't a little denser this time. I know that the density was probably the same as before but just as a control and to be a true comparison to the punch. Just some food for thought, and maybe an excuse for another video? Thanks for videos, and as a side note, good reliability test for the tx22 I love mine
It's not a bad round for the money.. I train with my wife and 13yr old son with these rounds and have for years and they have the same tool and a glock 44.. we have shot thousands of rounds and have had several under powered rounds but not like bucket O bullets or others.. but out of that tool they hit pretty on par with cci mini mags and just a little low with punch or stingers.. thanks for the video .. take care and God bless.. I love these rounds for training and I have squirrel hunted with a 10/22 many times they never let me down .. I have seriously witnessed 10-15 thousand rounds of this ammo shot..
I love Federal ammo for practice. They guarantee at least one failure per magazine, so you get to run two drills at the same time. If you set up a tap, rack, bang ahead of time, you never know if you were well trained or just knew it was coming.
Penetration formula it seems to be Weight of the bullet ( grains ) / 7000 / caliber x caliber x100 The number you have is penetration at 1000 fps So a .22 cal 40 grain bullet at 950 fps can penetrate deeper then a 29 grain one at 1200 fps if both bullets penetrate straight without thumbling Se have 40/7000/.223x.223 = 11.5 inches at 1000 fps and 11 inches at 950 fps For the 29 grain : 29/7000/.223x.223 = 10 inches at 1200 fps. Maybe this explain all
Over the summer i shot close to a case of auto match threw 4 rifles, my custom 10/22, my ruger precision rim fire, my Bergara bmr, and my cz 457. In firing over 3000 rounds i had 2 failures to fire. Accuracy was good for bulk ammo, depending on the rifle we are talking 3/4 to 2 1/2 in groups at 100 meters. The rprr and the cz loved the stuff at 100, the 10/22 shot it awesomely to 50 yards but then opened up, and the bmr hated it. But for cheap practice and squirrels, you can’t beet this ammo.
Brian, if I tried to shoot 64 rounds through a chrono, my chrono would be dangling on the tripod all busted up. 😂 P.S. the camera would be blown to pieces too… 😂
I have shot exactly 975 rounds of this from Walmart in a ruger mk4 just this week. I went everyday this week and bought 3 boxes a day and it shoots great
That is a lot of shooting...we tend to be happy running just a 100 through our mark iv when we bring it out, we like to use the automatch in our lever actions, when we will shoot the entire box...cheap plinking rules...!
New Subscriber here, I absolutely love your videos and definitely think the 22LR has a place for a CCW. No THUG wants to be shot with any weapon, even the small 22LR. Keep up the great videos Bro.
Found some auto match at Scheels yesterday for .06 cents a round. Looking forward to run a box through the TX22 soon. Whose sights are you running on yours? The ones at TK look taller for a suppressor.
great test tools...with that many shots that bulk pac done pretty dang good..can't see a reason to complant bout these..believe you're right ..i think you did hit a hot round on that last punch test..enjoyed this one tools keep them coming....
Make sure you get Automatch from the last six months or so. I compared the Auto from boxes bought from Walmart this year vs Auto from over a year or two ago. It was night and day. Newer ammo is clean and almost polished looking. My bullets of old Auto look like trash with dirty cases and tons of FTF. So far not one failure shooting a few hundred rounds of the new stuff out of two pistols and a Charget
Thank You Sir! I think automatch is good for 100 to 150yd and closer. I was plinking at 200 yd and noticed several splashing near 175 yd. I like cci minimags. 👍🇺🇸 #22aday
Man, I recently set up a 200 yd. target (3-inch dot on a 15w x 22h board), and I'm using match/standard-velocity rounds (factory specs 1070-1090 fps). With a 100 yd zero, I have to aim around FORTY INCHES HIGH @ 200! What REALLY blew my mind was, the shooting position had to be 12-13 yards further back for the 200 yd. target. But I want to pop the 100-yarder before switching directly to 200 just to MAKE SURE everything is up to snuff first, so I'm shooting the 100 yd. target from 112 yds. in those cases. But I started hitting nearly 2-1/2" LOW on my 100 yd. target on my first attempt (but remember, from 112 yds.) I'm thinking, WHAT THE HELL just happened? Thought I had everything dialed in (haven't had to adjust even ONE CLICK... and the clicks are 1/8 MOA... since I did my 100 yd. zero @ 40 yds. MONTHS AGO), and now THIS! At first, I cranked the scope up, but then thought later that I'd better double-check ballistics. YEP. The DROP between 100 and 112 yards is SUPPOSED to be almost 2-1/2"... BLEW MY MIND! I guess it makes sense, though, when you consider you have to hit around 20" high @ 100 for a 200 yd. zero, and thus, aim FORTY inches high @ 200 : )
@@lordofthewoods it I'ds good that you are checking the drop and adjusting the scope for the longer shots. I have been using my new Primary Arms 6x scope with ACSS reticle. I sight it in at 100yd and hold over for the maximum 200yd. It is interesting how the drop 2 1/2" over 15 yd. Thanks
Well now this is a interesting video and I always like 22LR ammo comparison. As far as I'm considered, Federal Auto match is much better than the punch because of the price and I go for whatever is available and cheap. My local Walmart store is full of the federal auto match for about 21 bucks and it works in all of my 22LR pistols and rifles.
I suppose you're kicking yourself for not shooting a couple of punches into the jel just to rule out those variables. Thank you very much for taking all the time and effort to do these tests. The prep work alone has to be huge.
I see the comments saying a box of this Federal 325rd cost 21$ for them and here I am with this expression 👀👀👀 the same box of ammo cost around 40$ here in Philippines and that is on a sale price with I think 10% off already. Cheapest ammo I can get here is the Armscor .22lr that cost 5$ to 6$ a box (50rd).
I still haven't seen a box of PUNCH yet, but my local Walmart got in a ton on AUTOMATCH. 325 round boxes for $21. I picked up a few

Inconsistent or not 21 bucks for 325 compared to 16 bucks for 50 is a huge deal for a round that penetrates as good as they do for the most part.

Yep, I could hear the two that were in the 700's before I even looked at the chrono.
It could have been a one off hot load. But the chrono on those rounds was flying pretty fast. So to me the quality control at manufacturing could be off to.
Definitely.👍
Love me some auto match! Have many thousands of rounds, old and new!
It's been one of the best bulk pack rounds for me by far.😎
@WalnutandSteel - 2 things:
1) I was very disappointed in the inconsistency of this newer ammo.
I have the older style box from 5 years ago and saw only 18fps between the fastest & slowest, but that was from only 10 rounds tested through the RCBS guys chrono.
2) - Your TH-cam handle,
"Walnut and Steel"
is absolutely one of the bitchinest I've seen! 👍👍👍
Nice test. There are a lot of variables that can affect gel performance. If I remember correctly the punch didn't hit the second block in one test. I was really looking at that Taurus. Very nice tool. All those rounds and tests and no issues. I have got to get me one.
😎👊
Paul Harrels country cousin. Lol. You have to go to his channel and watch him blow through 10,000s of rounds of different manufacturers 22lr. The performance repudiated some lofty reputations.
😎👍
Sad to say neither the Punch nor the AutoMatch work in my Walther P22 but that is not on the ammo. The AutoMatch works well in my rifles and the Punch will certainly work in my H&R revolvers. Thanks for all your 22 vids. Always fun to watch.
Interesting
The only other thing I think you should of done was 5 or 6 punch in the jell right behind the 5 or 6 auto match same conditions same temperatures etc
Thank you sir. I definitely don't wanna get hit with any of em!
👍
I was gonna say the exact same thing, but you took the words out of my mouth 👍👍.
Yeah! He wasn't wearing that Jacket either, bet that effected the continuity of the test as well...
It's 22 Jelly time 💯💯🔥🔥
Looks like you too a first on this one in that you were first to post.
😎👊
Thank you
Appreciate you checkin out the vid. Automatch has been some really good bulk stuff for me.👍
That hat gets me every time. Reminds me of Randy Quaid in Vacation. My 10/22 eats everything but that Federal automatch. I really think I got a bad box or something. It wouldn't strip the rounds out of my BX-25 mags. So I just use it in my bolt rifle.
Interesting.🤔
Thank you sir. Right there with ya on not using .22lr for defense unless it was my only option.👍
Im really glad you re-tested the automatch and put em through the ringer👍👍. Yea i was wonderin if it was just a fluke. I still got love for ya Automatch, but that Punch is a beast.
Yep. It aint bad stuff at all, but the Punch is just too good.
I counted 10 or 11 that chrono'd below 890 fps. At 100 fps or so less than the average in the 900's, those might be considered weak to some extent. I think one chrono'd 802.
Good test.
Thank you sir.😎
Agreed. 10% is huge. However if your just plinking, then it doesn't matter.
@@bigred7347 it does matter if ya want to use your auto loader as a repeater rather than a single shot
i think if you are concerned about over penetration the .22lr would be a good self defense round, especially in an apartment complex. my choice is the 9mm, 12 gauge buckshot and .556 but i live alone in a house with no close neighbors...
It would definitely get the job done, especially in a smaller rifle or carbine with a big ol' mag full.👍
Thanks!
😎👊
I have some of this ammo that I use for plinking in my more accurate rimfire rifles. It is 10 years old and a lot more consistent than this newer stuff that you are using! Federal better get it together...
Keep on Truckin my friend!
😎👍
Oh, ALL my favorite ammo is the older production (some even FIFTY years old!)... from back when they weren't running the factories 24/7! : )
Absolutely!
Awesome test as usual!!! Thank you for all your hard work
Appreciate that, my friend!
May have something to do with the age of the gel. The old blocks may be harder.
According to the info on their site, the calibration is good indefinitely regardless of remelts.🤷♂️
@@ToolsandTargets I didn't know if it affect it or not.
For bulk ammo, Federal Automax isn't a slouch. Great for plinking and I've had a lot more reliability out of it vs Winchester bulk.
Same here. The Winchester white box stuff is probably the sketchiest that I've used.
Keep up the good work huckberry 🤠
Appreciate you, brother!
Good test, I'd like to see an identical test using the Federal Punch.
Thank you sir. I definitely need to do that.
The TX22 eats everything!
In honor of you Tools I am wearing my USA cap just like the one you are wearing in this video!
Nice! 😎👊
I watch your videos because I like the way you talk. What state are you in?
About this test; do you this the gel could be more dence?
Appreciate you checking out the videos. I'm in Southwest, VA.
Anywhere near Martinsville?
Thank you for this information. Rev
Agreed. I have had failure to fires with golden bullets fairly often. Not with these Automatch.👍
Another fine video. We appreciate your videos taking the time and expense to do these test. Beautiful view up on the mountain.❤️
Thank you sir. Appreciate that!
I love Federal ammo for practice. They guarantee at least one failure per magazine, so you get to run two drills at the same time.
If you set up a tap, rack, bang ahead of time, you never know if you were well trained or just knew it was coming.
It is good the see Federal got the priming issues of a few years ago behind them.
😎👍
Great testing! Nice hat, been wearing mine a lot this winter!
Thank you sir. Love this hat!
Out of a complete box of that ammo, I had 2 that did not fire.
I bought several boxes and feel happy with the purchase 😎💪😎💪
Nice. I've always had good luck with it.
Tool's, that was the Bomb!
Appreciate you, brother!
Great video. As always I appreciate your hard work and time invested.
Thank you sir!😎👊
Penetration formula it seems to be
Weight of the bullet ( grains ) / 7000 / caliber x caliber x100
The number you have is penetration at 1000 fps
So a .22 cal 40 grain bullet at 950 fps can penetrate deeper then a 29 grain one at 1200 fps if both bullets penetrate straight without thumbling
Se have 40/7000/.223x.223 = 11.5 inches at 1000 fps and 11 inches at 950 fps
For the 29 grain :
29/7000/.223x.223 = 10 inches at 1200 fps.
Maybe this explain all
Sounds great on paper but that's not what happens in a real world situation.👍
Agreed. It has always run good for me.
One of the guys I shot NRL22 with is a Gunsmith at one of the local gun shops. He shoots NOTHING but Fed Automatch in his competition 22.
It may not be my FAVORITE (I prefer Wolf Match Extra, which is actually produced by Eley, for accuracy), but it IS the one I have the MOST of! : )
Nice!
Brian, if I tried to shoot 64 rounds through a chrono, my chrono would be dangling on the tripod all busted up. 😂 P.S. the camera would be blown to pieces too… 😂
😂😂😂
You don't 'posta shoot bird shot through a chrono! : )
Great, informative video as always T & T !
Thank you sir.😎👊
I have shot exactly 975 rounds of this from Walmart in a ruger mk4 just this week. I went everyday this week and bought 3 boxes a day and it shoots great
Nice. It's good stuff especially for the cost.
Thank you sir. Appreciate that! I don't wanna be on the wrong end of any caliber.👍
Not quite as good as we thought but not bad. Thanks for the jelly test 😁
Yeah, good enough for government work but definitely not the king!
Found some auto match at Scheels yesterday for .06 cents a round. Looking forward to run a box through the TX22 soon.
Whose sights are you running on yours? The ones at TK look taller for a suppressor.
Great testing lots of rounds shot, good j9b with all that.
Thank you sir!
Tools, I think we need a best 2 out of 3 head to head lol. I appreciate your channel.
Thank you sir!
great test tools...with that many shots that bulk pac done pretty dang good..can't see a reason to complant bout these..believe you're right ..i think you did hit a hot round on that last punch test..enjoyed this one tools keep them coming....
Thank you sir. Every dog has it's day!
😎👍
Thank You Sir! I think automatch is good for 100 to 150yd and closer. I was plinking at 200 yd and noticed several splashing near 175 yd. I like cci minimags. 👍🇺🇸 #22aday
Yeah, it would be hard to get really consistent hits at very long range with the loads being so different.
But I started hitting nearly 2-1/2" LOW on my 100 yd. target on my first attempt (but remember, from 112 yds.)
I'm thinking, WHAT THE HELL just happened?
Nah, I was satisfied. It definitely is time consuming stuff. Appreciate that!
That's a shame it's so high there.😣
I just had a good idea. You should put the Konograph in front of the jelly for the jelly tests
😂😂😂
Thank you for the video. I found 3 boxes of automatch today. I like it. And it is priced good at WM.
Yessir. Wallyworld seems to keep it in stock quite a bit lately.
