    I'm about to finish mine, building this kit was a hell of a journey but in the most enjoyable way! I still can' believe the size of it and the level of detail when I hold it in my hands. The engine is a kit itself. Just make sure to dryfit and check everything before gluing the parts together. Bulkheads will be tight fit, also the internal structure of the wing assembly. But after careful trimming and sanding here and there it just cliks together like a snap fit kit! Only had to use very little amount of putty here and there...

      Hi, mind if I ask a question about filling? It's something that has stopped me from starting again.
      I base this on my experience sanding and filling when house painting in that if you fill a gap in a seam or similar, you need to put enough into the gap to have it sit a little proud of the plastic. When sanding it back though, there is the danger of taking away the proper surface, potentially other detail as well. I have watched videos of builders really going hard at it with the sanding sticks and it looks like they do more harm to the finish just to fill a small section. Is there something I'm missing in thinking the sanding is going to ruin the finish? Thx.

    • @pauka13
      @pauka13 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@andrewstamford1988 Yes the theory in plastic models is literally the same. But there are really great products for the task, like Vallejo plastic putty, wich is water based and comes in a tube with applicator. It just can be applied to the seam directly from the tube and after a few minutes the excess can be wiped off with a cotton swab moistened with water. Almost no sanding required. For larger gaps I use Tamiya two part epoxy (or similar). When sanding is needed, you can protect the surface along the seam line with masking tape to minimize the damage. You might need a scribing tool to restore and clean panel lines in some cases though. Hope this helps!

    Wow Here in the U.S these kits are around $120 which for what this kit has inside is an extremely good value. I usually balk at $100 kits or even $75 ones, but in 1:24th scale with all these parts it's actually pretty fair. If it included PE addons I think the value would be more appealing and thus generate more sales, as it sits this kit will be out of most hobbyist price ranges. Great unboxing video!!

Also, does the kit include parts to make an F6F-3E, an F6F-3N, and/or an F6F-5N? Additionally, does the kit include an aviator figure suitable for sitting in the cockpit seat? Would you know of any aftermarket details sets, accessories, etc., addressing this kit? Would you know of any other 1:25th/1:24th-scale aircraft kits?

    I did not know that Airfix were still putting that brilliant little DC motor in their kits !. I have the 1/24 Spitfire that I bought in 1983 and it had the motor option but the motor had to be purchased separately. I've since collected quite a few Dinky (Meccano) aircraft and some of the larger ones have the motor. Airfix of course acquired Meccano in 1971 and used the little DC flick start motor in the Dinky planes. Those motors have been made out of unobtainium, I'll have to see if they are available from Airfix as I need one for my Dinky A6m Zero.

    This kit is a tribute to one of the unsung heroes of the war. It came along quickly after the beginning of America's involvement(It was already planned as a replacement for the F-4F Wildcat, so really all they needed was the go-ahead from the Navy) and it quickly became known as the "Zero-Killer." By producing them in quantity, Grumman was able to lower the price per plane to $35,000, one of the best bargains for a war-bird in WW2. The B-29 program cost MORE than the Atom bomb!

  • @julianmhall

    Hi Matt.. I saw this yesterday, and you mentioned not thinking Airfix would make more. However I take the opposite view, because Airfix have /already/ done the heavy lifting financially with the R & D and creating the dies for moulding the sprues. The strength of the second hand market shows there is still an interest in this kit. Therefore I think Airfix would be making a mistake /not/ to re-release this kit as future runs would be cheaper and give them more profit per kit.

    • @ModelMinutes
      @ModelMinutes  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ModelMinutes on a more serious note, and after seeing the whole video 👍, it is a serious hunk of plastic for sure. Haven't seen or heard of any other reviews at all, so here's a go at impressions from your presentation.
      I tend to look at larger sizes of aircraft and armor in a similar manner as 200/350 scale ships. Not just price, mostly in care of build choices, aftermarket additions, and detail presentation. It's probably going to sit on my shelf and more likely to only be seen by me. It's a hobby and about my enjoyment of my anal retentiveness (it's my quirk and I like it 😜). As example, the engine detail; why would I not put the small effort into the wires and graphite edging for the jugs. You, on the other hand, are balancing the video presentation with the end result. Average modeler getting this kit probably would do those steps also. It kinda goes with the scale. If it's a 48th, different animal and choice. 32nd gets into the visibility question and effort/results equation. In ships terms, am I going to put better blast bags and barrels on a 700? Nope. 350? Most likely. 200th? You betcha. There are some thresholds that are easy to define as yes and no's. The cockpit details are part of the not clear area (pun is free of charge). Having to conceive ahead of time what is and isn't visible and worth the effort becomes more subjective. Tough choice for you in this instance. Also, which aftermarket cockpit set? Whole lot of choices and decisions there. I really appreciated the look through the instructions for tidbits of your thinking and definitely would like to have a separate video just on that with some of the choices+ why nots (or why's). Mostly because hardly anyone does that type of video separately, or even as a good part of another. (Ron at The Model Shed does this well, a rarity among non-ship nerds and large scale). Taking into consideration that ships we are dealing with $3-500 on just the ship, and usually half to equal amounts in upgrades, it's a different look at 24th scale and some of the choices. Generally it's as if you were almost overwhelmed by the detail and size, so a very refreshing true perspective of an unboxing. Great choice for a subject. Well done with the video 👍. Gonna be a more than 3 parter to really capture this build, and something tells me you will do an amazing job on it. Looking forward to it.

      I spoke to them about pilots, apprently they cost a lot to create (modelling wise) and as each cockpit is different, each model would need a specific pilot to fit it (humans are a bit more squishy and can bend themselves better than plastic)
