    Looks like it was a very good thing that you tore out the cabinets or you might not had found that leak until it was too late.❤ Love the analogy between your subscribers and the centipede. Great progress! 👍🏼Mary💕Fred

    Nice job man. I just bought a old camper for 800. It has a small bed area that is damaged. But I'm going to redo the whole bed area to what is a full size width wise to a queen going length wise and cabinets on one side plus adding a 6 inch raised roof and redoing the sides and top and also making a wet bath area extension on the back 8 inches.

    • @BackcountryBanter
      @BackcountryBanter  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I was pretty surprised with how rickety the internals on the camper were. Apparently it's the norm among most camper brands. Some modern campers are aluminum framed which is nice, but it seems that most brands still cut corners somewhere.

    It's funny that you mentioned the leatherman, I just ordered one the other day! I got a leatherman charge, almost the same as yours! Good work on the camper, I'm glad the water damage didn't mean the death of the dream. It's awesome to see how you fixed it! I love all the details about what tools and glues and tapes and materials you're using.

    • @BackcountryBanter
      @BackcountryBanter  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      😂 💩🔥🦶 I was very clear in my questions and asked him in several different ways if it had water damage. Of course he bought it used as well so I suppose it could have been there when he bought it. I didn't really know what to look for at that time but I do now haha.

    You want to check every corner where those supports are, there is a good chance there will be water ingress on all of them. Also why didn't you treat the new wood before you put it in?

    • @BackcountryBanter
      @BackcountryBanter  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We are in the process of taking off all of the other jack stands and checking them out. It probably would have been smart to paint the wood before we installed it 🤷‍♂️ didn't think of that at the time haha.

    • @nicktombs1876
      @nicktombs1876 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@BackcountryBanter it's easy to not think about treating it as the wood that is being replaced is rarely treated, hopefully the other corners will turn out to be better for you.

  • @ihikefar
    @ihikefar 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I’m confused. The truck stands screw into the corners made of soft wood? How much does that camper weigh again?

    • @BackcountryBanter
      @BackcountryBanter  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yeah, they're basically just lag bolted into that wooden corner which is made of tiny 1"x2"s. Seems like a horrible design. When we reattach the jack supports we are adding an aluminum angle and through-bolting them to help strengthen the corner. The camper weighs somewhere between 950-1000 lbs dry.

  • @57squared

    Ugh, that's nasty rot. The goop on the screw channel outside is superficial. I bet they tried to fix the leak but the rubber strip in the middle is just cosmetic to begin with. Any leaks inside that channel would be from the screws and holes into the camper frame. Blocking the water from flowing down and out causes more issues when it backs up and pools. If it would have just dripped through it would probably have been less of an issue. I'd be concerned with cutting the horizontal outer edge frame member without supporting it somehow since you have corner jacks which will put all the stress on that corner vertical beam and whatever it's tied to. Perhaps look into some "strong ties" through bolted to reinforce where the cut on the side is so it bridges the load stress past the joint.

    • @BackcountryBanter
      @BackcountryBanter  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a fair point, it'd probably be smart to reinforce it more. I'll look into those. Yeah, the water drainage blockage could have definitely been the issue. I also suspect that some water was getting in through this little door holder bracket that was very near the jack. It was missing a screw and any water trapped inside the plastic casing would be funneled directly into the missing screw hole. I think I've blocked and caulked all the entryways now though. Time will tell haha. I've enjoyed following your videos so far!

    • @57squared
      @57squared 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BackcountryBanter Water wants to follow the easiest path. Screw holes are generally not the easiest because water wants to drip past with gravity. It needs quite a bit of water to back up through a screw hole to create that much rot, unless there is a blockage that causes it to back up and the screw hole is the primary path in. I highly suggest you look at the U channel trim around the top on the outside as well. I would not be surprised if it was leaking where the top meets that trim and traveling down the inside of the aluminum siding, then coming back under the side "wing" plywood and sitting there. You can take a hose to it with the insulation out when the wall is disassembled and see what entry points show water coming in. If it was stored outside with the top down, and the rot going that far up the sides I'd guess its the jack brackets and poor sealing of the screws and cover trim. Not a pro at this by any means.... just dealt with way too many water intrusions in my life :)
      We should have another video coming up in the next day or two with some more progress. It's cool to see you two moving along as well and I'm looking forward to seeing what it looks like when you're all done!
      Edit to add, steel angle could work well too - would reinforce the frame side and the bottom of the plywood.
