Boron AFS, 06/72-06/73. Getting a tour of the buildings' foundations made my brain hurt. There also used to be a duck blind down the hill from the radars, outside the fence. i never saw ducks, but guys used to harvest migrating ducks there. There was one snowstorm and one flood in the year I was there.
I was a inmate there for 2 years for counterfeiting $$$_ No fencing, no gun Tower, last stop was a place they call four corners. Gas station, small post office, general store. BORON FPC had the best food around!!!!! I worked in R&D the best job there. Receiving and Discharging inmates. Mojave Green rattlesnake and scorpions. I remember watching the triple crown horseracing. I made $100 thanks to my friend old man Jack, lazy "L" Ranch. They called me "Markanthony" you didn't show what we called "the chapel on the hill" remembering the staff, Ms, swirly , Ms, Martinez, Mr Murray, and that sweet beautiful mail clerk lady Ms Mayweather. Good people, "Club Fed"
@@Herlongian yes that is true . I remember that they would observe many festivities from different cultures. If you were going to serve time. This is the place you would want to be.
Ah yes. I was there in the mid '80s for a breif 5 or 6 months of a 5yr sentence. Bank fraud. Got shipped out of there for getting into a verbal disagreement with the head nurse. We called her the "Killer Tomato" because she was extremely obese and often wore this one red dress. For this disagreement in which no voices were raised and obviously no violence I was shipped to a Federal Prision in Phoenix. Level 3-4
I lived there on the reservation during my 5th and 6th grade years. My step father was one of the Associate Wardens. I can remember sometimes using the facilities as a kid, playing games along side of the inmates. That would have been 1984-85. No Kramer Junction back then, we had places called 4 corners and 7 corners. Having the entire desert as a backyard to play in as a kid was amazing.
I lived there too. It was fuckin cool to ride the quads when i was young amazing how all those dirt trails lead to some place. I got some stories my friend
Good work, a few corrections. I was in the camp Oct 96-Sept 98. It was opened as a prison 1979-June 99. It was a Federal Bureau of Prisons Camp. I would be happy to answer any questions that I possibly can.
My dad was a radar jockey here from 1969 through 1973. His official job title was "Electronic Counter, Counter Measures Technician". He would take me to work with him often when he was on the graveyard shift. I had to get on the floor of our 62 Impala and he would cover me up with a coat so we could get through the guard gate. He taught me how to read the paints on the radar screens. I learned how to discern mountains, clouds, flocks of birds AND aircraft. He also taught me how to put the crosshairs on potential aircraft and send the data to the computer in the back room. If the local computer determined it was unidentified aircraft, it would send the data to a more powerful computer in Texas. I was 6, 7 and 8 years old and protecting the west coast during the cold war, while my dad napped. Amazing memories and my first "video game"! I could still run that equipment to this day if it still existed. While not photographic, I do have an excellent memory. Good times!
I was there yesterday. Looks the same. 20 years ago I was an Air Force "Tracking Technician/ Air-Space Operator" '(1C571) with the Western Air Defense Sector at McCord AFB in Washington State. I think we may have tied into this radar at times but I can't be sure. This is great footage
I am surprised they haven't gated off this entire place. When I visited, I was hoping the old buildings were still there, but now we just have to use our imagination. Thanks for the update.
@@battlefoxx There is a gate that is clossed on the main drive but the parking area to the right has plenty of room to drive or walk. There is an imposing sign stating that trespassing may be prosecuted by fine, imprison or both. And that CCT cameras are recording everything. And something about investigations are underway. We walked the grounds and didn't see anyone. We didn't disturb anything. I doubt they were worried about an old guy with his young daughter poking around. I am interested in the operational radar. I wish I would have visited it officially while active duty Air Force
The radar facility is very much in use. FAA Southern California. Did you notice there is a power line connected to the facility? The entire 4th and 5th floors house massive air conditioning units. Inside the dome, is a huge radar bar spinning around. The dome itself is there to protect the radar.
There was a big shiny brand new chainlink gate with multiple warning signs closer to the road. That’s long gone. It was put up right after demolition. I predicted it would be stolen. Now, as shown in the video, you can drive up to the administration parking lot. On the stairs next to the Bureau of Prisons plaque, the name RP Ulrich is scratched into the cement.
Yep. I was disappointed all the buildings were torn down.....but, it is what it is. Thanks for the update on the radar - I did not know it was still in use. They FAA or security people should do a better job, though.
@RandomRandomnessKCMO yeah from inside the fenced area this guy came down from the white building on top of the hill telling me a bunch of nonsense I told him If you really want to keep people out put a fence around the whole perimeter not just the road
It is true that Edwards Air Force base was not to far away. At midnight they used to test fly the B-2 bomber we thought it was a u.f.o. I also saw an SR- 71. 1 time. The air force also was working on remote controlled airplanes, what we now as drones. FACTS!
Oh yes it is in use , there will be armed guards if you tried to get in the dome , lol or at least that what happened when I was up there guards came out on the platform up on the dome and watched me while I was walking Aaron d like you are, But now there is nothing but rocks and dirt , no concrete,no buildings , no fences ,not as much as a trace of it ever being a prison , you can thank the air soft people for get that done , 1400 people coming up there for air soft illegal competitions m lol thanks buddy BigAl California
That 'detection radar' you point to was used for tracking aircraft and assisted LAX with its air traffic. I was stationed on Boron prior to its closure as an AFS.
Thanks....I thought it was, but then wasn't super sure. Anyway, it isn't there anymore....so, probably doesn't matter. Maybe the quarter we found belonged to your uncle?
They also had a fire station inmate's would be on fire Crew and fight fire in other nearby places also we had emergency medivac Helicopter just in case snake bite kit was not working.
