  • Its way too hot out to actually shoot, so lets take a look at and nitpick the old XBRN16E1 from Brownells. We'll compare this Colt XM16E1 semi-auto clone with an original SP1 and also a M16A1 built from a parts kit. Just how faithful of a replica is this rifle anyway?
    Here is our earlier review and nitpick of Brownells BRN601 (Colt Model 01 USAF clone):
    • Brownells BRN-601 Retr...
    And here is the video where Jay fixed the green furniture too, why not?
    • Painting Brownells 601...
    Any mistakes I made or things I misspoke on, its the heat's fault!

    My BASIC training in 1989 featured M16A1 s. Never really bonded with the A2 the way I did with the A1. The triangle grips were much better than the A2 round and ribbed for your pleasure ones. Viet Nam era rifle, still qualified expert.

      The triangle handguards are notorious for breaking, that's why you see so many M16/M16A1s retrofitted with A2 handguards. I do like the grip of the triangle handguards better though.

    I found a surplus E1 upper a long time ago and ended up putting it on a retro Brownell's lower. It's a joy to shoot and carry. If the Army had developed a flattop version of this rifle with some type of lightweight rail system (and with a faster rifling twist), it would be a perfect rifle today.

  • @PARR53
    @PARR53 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I’ve had that exact rifle since they came out. Too bad brownells retro line is done for but the H&R retro lines through PSA has more than taken up this mantle. Mine has been nothing but an excellent weapon. Zero issues and shoots M193 ball in the ~2.5 MOA for 5 shot groups fairly consistently. I put a brownells retro scope on it which is also awesome for what it is.

    I wanted the 1:8” with M4 ramps and a flattop

    Why doesn’t Brownells still produce the retro series of M16’s? They sold a shitload of them, why don’t they reintroduce them!?

    • @w.r.harvey7751
      @w.r.harvey7751 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Because they were sourcing their uppers and lowers from Nodak Spud. Nodak Spud was bought by JJE Capital Holdings, the parent company for Palmetto State Armory. PSA now sells a retro series of M16 variants under the trade name Harrington & Richardson. Harrington & Richardson was at one time a supplier of M16s for the U.S. military during Vietnam, along with Colt and GM Hydramatic. When Harrington & Richardson went out of business their assets and trade name went through multiple hands - Marlin, Remington, until eventually being bought by JJE. All that to say if you want a rifle like this the Harrington & Richardson line from PSA is the way to go. Many reviews have stated that the quality has improved under PSA compared to the Brownells contracts, and big plus for the collector is that since H&R was a legit supplier you'll get a "clone correct" roll mark as well. Additionally these rifles are coming in a little bit cheaper as well.

    I picked up the Colt-branded XM16E1 reissue. It's a nice improvement on the earlier M16A1 they did. For example, they now roll mark the barrel with "MP" and "12". For a 1967 gun, most things are correct and you get the real markings which set it apart from the Brownells. There are still a couple of errors though, like the pivot pin lug not being counter bored and (as you pointed out on the Brownells equivalent) the front sling swivel uses a rivet instead of a roll pin.

    18:47 No? It's .315 I believe on the SP1. Definitely not .230 its larger than the standard .250 milspec pins not smaller. The hole spacing is also slightly different but its close enough that an offset bushing(or two offset bushings if modifying the SP1 lower to accept a milspec pin upper) can allow use of a milspec pin upper on SP1 lower or vice versa.

    After searching and searching for several years, I have found only two manufacturers of reproduction handguards that fit absolutely perfect and are shaped exactly as originals. One has a rougher texture but is otherwise exactly the same and the other is smoother and also has a perfect shape. The Brownells handguards and every other manufacturer are all wrong and don't even fit the metal handguard endcaps properly. Sadly one of those two are now currently discontinued and the company went out of business. Only new old stock is left.

    Added a 1968 SP1 to my collection, it had the half moon bolt carrier with undercut exposed firing pin, anti misfire hammer with firing pin catch cut. Bolt and carrier were in horrible condition, caked with carbon and deep pitting, picked up the chrome BCG from Brownells on sale, SP1 is slab side lower with large front screw/pin, upper has no shell deflector or forward assist. Does have A1 birdcage with split washer and the straight D ring and A1 with trap door butstock with non pivot sling ring. I did rebuild the old bolt and carrier with a new firing pin, extractor spring, extractor, and saved all the old parts too.

    Hi Misha, quick question for you: I was wondering your thoughts between the barrels on the Colt Model 601 and 602, basically the 1in14 and 1in12 twist rates, the differences and the advantage and disadvantages of both. From what I read on a blog 1in14 was more destructive since the round started tumbling the moment it made contact as opposed to the 1in12 stats tumbling after a few inches penetration, the 1in12 is 40% less damaging. I also read 1in12 is more accurate than 1in14 (using the 55gr round) at 100 yards, and the 1in12 will travel farther and more accurate way farther down range. I was wondering your thoughts on this and what you may know about those two twist rates. thanks ! I want to eventually do a retro full length rifle build and maybe 1in14 being more rare twist rate and for the curiosity and hype at the range with watermelons and coconuts with the 55grs rounds. Just a thought.. Looking for some feedback and suggestions. :D

    Guess what, speaking of mentioning the FN FAL… if the US military were to adopt the FAL instead of the T44 [M14], the FAL too can also be surpassed by the AR15, and it’s largely because of the interest by the US Air Force. So, it doesn’t matter whether it’s the M14 or the FAL… and we’ll still have the AR15 unless if the AR10 were to not exist.
